IT might sound corny but one has to say that Intellectual looks quite a smart horse. Herman Brown’s runner has raced just eight times for the three wins and four places and it was only in his last start, the Post Merchants at Greyville, that he ran out of the first four.

In a race, run in pouring rain, Intellectual was up with the pace but tired late to seventh, 6.35 lengths behind Mentor. Nimley, who was just three lengths ahead of him, won next time while Arabesque Dancer, who was 5.50 lengths behind Intellectual, beat a strong field at Clairwood last Sunday.

Intellectual has run three times at Scottsville for a win and two seconds (both after a layoff) and will get plenty of support from the saddle in Race 7, a MR 90 Handicap over 1200m, as Anthony Delpech has been booked for the ride.

Hardhabittobreak was caught in the dying strides by Yarnmaster and Combat Leader over 1200m at Clairwood last time out and should follow Intellectual home345. Julie Dittmer’s runner has a preference for this course and all three of his wins have come at Scottsville. With a 2kg weight advantage, he should turn tables on Combat Leader. Although Glen Kotzen’s runner was slowly away that day, just a head separated the pair at the line.

Combat Leader has run well since moving from Cape Town with two wins and that second, and with Grant van Niekerk claiming a 4kg apprentice allowance, the five-year-old son of Captain Al should contest the finish.

Jet Man, runner up to Combat Leader last time out, looks best of the rest.
