Snaith and Fourie have Sparkling Gem on their hands

Trainer Justin Snaith

TRAINER Justin Snaith and jockey Richard Fourie made it back-to-back wins in the Grade 1 Avontuur Estate Cape Fillies Guineas over 1600m when Sparkling Gem (12-1) led from start to finish in a powerful field including accomplished Graded winners Consensual and Zirconeum.

<div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt">The race was reminiscent of last year’s Guineas when Fourie dictated the pace on Captain’s Lover and held off a flying Gilded Minaret.</div> <div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt">“Like last year, we got out well and into a good position and I was able to set the pace. I slowed it down like last year and when I pushed the button in the straight she got away,’’ said Fourie.</div> <div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt">Andrew Fortune tried to get onto terms aboard Mother Russia and challenged well, but Fourie said: “They never headed me. I changed my stick to the right and Sparkling Gem found another gear.”</div> <div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt">Zirconeum had every chance, but appeared to hit a flat spot before running on for third, but she was soundly beaten. Consensual, however, never looked dangerous and was a spent force with 300m to run.</div> <div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt">Sparkling Gem’s trainer Justin Snaith. “She’s a huge filly, over 500kg and all heart, perhaps the closest filly I have to Dancer’s Daughter. She’s always impressed me.’’</div> <div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt">Sparkling Gem is owned by Hassan Adams, Dave and Sue Whitelaw and Chris Snaith.
