Trainer Gavin van Zyl.
FOLLOWING an appalling run where the stable were battling to even go home345 with the occasional placing, Gavin van Zyl’s yard came back to form with a vengeance at Scottsville last week with a four-timer. Van Zyl added another winner to his tally when Super Senyk claimed the last race at Greyville on Sunday.

Unearthing winners will not be easy on today’s Scottsville card but with Van Zyl back in form, he could provide the answer to a tricky MR 82 Handicap over 1600m where he saddles Mar Aberto. The Brazilian-bred runner has been in the company of far better runners than he meets today and this drop in class could prove ideal.

His last outing was in a strong Graduation Plate over 1800m at Clairwood where he led going through the 400m mark but faded late to finish a 4.50-length fourth to a rejuvenated Pirate’s Gold.

It is more than a year back that Mar Aberto contested his only race at Scottsville but he did rather well in that attempt over 1400m, running on strongly to finish just 1.50 lengths behind The Big Ask. Apprentice Karis Teetan has ridden four of the last five winners for the yard and he is in the irons on Mar Aberto.

Gamesmanship looks the obvious danger. Doug Campbell’s runner is bang in form and loves the track. The only concern is that he just gets 1600m and could find himself under pressure in the latter stages of the race.

Restless Wind is bang in form but he always seems to find one better. In his last start he was caught late by King Thom over 1400m at the track and could struggle to keep the other two at bay late in the race.
