Delpech back soon after appendicitis scare

Ken Nicol: Current champion jockey Anthony Delpech had a medical scare on Thursday when he went down with suspected appendicitis and was taken to hospital for urgent attention.

The good news is that after a minor procedure the problem was found to be “merely” a severely painful internal inflammation which can be resolved without surgery. He has been placed on a course of strong antibiotics, and will be back in action very soon.“I may even be riding on Saturday if the doctors give me the all clear,’’ was the audibly relieved word from his hospital bed.

He is scheduled to throw a leg over three mounts for Mike De Kock at Kenilworth on Saturday, including Silver Thursday in the Fillies Guineas, and exciting unbeaten sprinter Mujaafy in a Graduation Plate.

This would have been a bad time to be sidelined for an extended period with the Cape season about to hit full swing, and his many supporters will be cheered by the news that the hugely talented rider will be available soon.
