Captain Aldo, a tough seven-year-old speedster from the stable of St John Gray, stole the main race at Turffontein on Saturday, a Pinnacle Stakes over 1400m.
Kangaroo Jack started as the 3-1 favourite in a wide betting race but never got into the picture.
Captain Aldo (6-1), under Karl Zechner, set out to make all the running and the early challengers fell by the wayside. He looked home and hosed when Will Pays (9-1) from the yard of Mike and Adam Azzie charged late.
The two horses crossed the line as one in a thrilling finish, but the photo showed that Will Pays and rider Craig Zackey needed one more stride to nose ahead.
