Bonginkosi Nkosi: Gavin Lerena terrorised his peers as an apprentice jockey in his day, impressively riding a total of 284 winners at the end of his term – but, as basketball player LeBron James put it, “Records are meant to be broken.”
That day looks closer than we might have imagined, as rising star Lyle Hewitson is only eight wins away from equalling Lerena’s record. And considering the season has some way to run, it is almost a certainty he will surpass it.
“We are exceptionally proud of Lyle. It’s amazing that he’s only a few wins away from breaking Gavin’s record,” said an excited Robert Moore, Gauteng Jockey Academy’s riding master.
Over the last two seasons, Hewitson has performed exceptionally well and has achieved the sort of success many seasoned vets can only dream of. He rode in the Durban July last year and is not showing any signs of stopping. This week he was sitting second on the National Jockeys’ Log with 79 winners – 28 wins behind current champion jockey Anthony Delpech.
The countdown begins and considering he’s booked plenty rides with winning chances at the Vaal on Tuesday, it might be worth switching on your TV, or even making your way down to the course to watch the action live.
