SEAN CORMACK

Trevor Reid: Followers of South African racing were caught by surprise in December 2015 when jockey Sean Cormack announced his retirement for medical reasons, so it must have pleased his followers to learn he has returned to race riding – in Australia.

He is currently riding at Sunshine Coast, a course often shown on Tellytrack channel so hopefully we will see a lot more of Cormack on our screens. Cormack was unplaced in his first two rides, aboard 20-1 and 7-1 shots. He then tried his luck at Doomben, a metro track, and was unplaced on 60-1 shot Primed For Destiny.

Now 48-years-old, Cormack fared much better back on the Sunshine Coast on Monday by finishing runner-up on Winter Passage and then third on Teyssier.

Cormack, who rode in Australia a number of years back before returning to South Africa where he rode specifically for Dennis Drier, has an impressive record in the irons, having ridden 954 winners in 6,646 rides, so he should not be long away from his first winner Down Under.

Other top jockeys plying their trade successfully in Australia are Jeff Lloyd, Glyn Schofield and Robbie Fradd, while others, like Denicous Smith, Chris Taylor and Donovan Howell, are still trying to break through.
