Invasor injured, retired

NEW YORK – 2006 USA Horse of the Year Invasor was on Saturday retired after veterinary surgeons found a cracked bone in his right hind leg.

The injury was found following a workout. It is not life-threatening, but the horse’s racing days are over.

Invasor won 11 races and $7.8 million during his career. His biggest wins came last year at the $5-million Breeder’s Cup Classic and $6-million Dubai World Cup. The five-year-old colt lost only once in his career.

Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin explained how the injury was found.

"He came back fine from our workout," McLaughlin said. "But when we went to wash his feet, he took a couple of funny steps and we noticed some swelling in his right hind leg."

With the finding of the cracked bone, Invasor was scratched from his scheduled outing, the Suburban Handicap on 30 June at Belmont Park.

Instead, the former Horse of the Year will be sent to stud at Shadwell Farm in Kentucky.

The end of the horse’s racing career left McLaughlin particularly distressed.

"It’s a very sad day for all of us," he said. "Invasor was a superb horse and a pleasure to be around." – AHN.
