Zac Casa at Kranji

Zac Casa at Kranji

Friday 23 March – Meeting Preview, selections, comments and odds for Kranji(Singapore)

A stand-alone Friday meeting and while there are some nice enough races later in the card, a cracking Novice sprint (race 3) is the pick of the card. The field has no less than six last start winners including the exciting 3yo, Zac Kasa.

The Cliff Brown-trained gelding had excuses when placing with support on debut in October 2017 but came under notice after some excellent trials with blinkers added in 2018.

Punters, who sent him off the $1.20 favourite, didn’t miss the trials and he duly saluted in impressive fashion when resuming over a nice type in Lim’s Zoom. He will start favourite again but another 3YO in Loving You could keep things interesting.

The US-bred filly gets in under the race conditions with just 51kg and, given she also won (on debut) as the odds-on elect, she has to be respected with Glen Boss to ride.

Imperium and Lord O’Reilly are two other 3YO’s that won at their respective last starts while Boy Wonder and Hyde Park – the latter super impressive – round out the horses hoping for back-to-back wins.

Best Bets: (ZAC KASA race 3, win), (SATELLITE STAR race 1, each-way) and (O’REILLY’S DANCER race 5, value).

Please note the odds listed are “reference odds” only.

Race 1

It’s obviously hard to be confident in the opener with so many battlers taking part, so a couple of seemingly out of form Class droppers in SATELLITE STAR and THUNDER CAT may be the one’s to watch. Both obviously appreciate the drop to the bottom division but more importantly both get a switch to a senior hoop and get to jump from a good gate. SATELLITE STAR in particular showed enough late last start to think he has more to offer but the tote will be a good guide.

Of those with exposed solid form under their belts, David Hill has three veterans in the 12YO COOL CAT and two 9YO’s in SIMPANG and last start winner SECONDWAVE who can all play a part while KUBERA’S CHIEF has pace with a cheeky run expected. RACING TALENT’s jockey got time last start so he is worth another look, although the gate is a worry. Betting Strategy – SATELLITE STAR each-way.

1 HALLELUJAH ** Maiden whose form reads badly but may improve in Class 5. Watch market. 20
2 RACING TALENT *** Draw a concern but jockey got time last start when supported. Can go forward and pay to keep safe. 4.00
3 SATELLITE STAR *** Showed enough late last start to think he has something to offer dropping to Class 5 with switch to senior hoop and gate 3 a factor. 12
4 THUNDER CAT *** Another in poor form but drops in Class and appreciates senior hoop from inside gate. 12
5 TOP BANANA * No. 200
6 GENERAL CONATUS ** Should need longer to win but in solid form and this field is weak so can include in exotics. 8.00
7 AMISTAD ** Didn’t look interested last start but has won a couple of late so keep safe. 8.00
8 KUBERA’S CHIEF *** Did it tough last start from wide gate so ignore as has the pace to have a big say in this field from gate 5. 12
9 COOL CAT ** Veteran who is in solid form but may have forgotten how to win. 8.00
10 SECONDWAVE *** Broke through for only second win in 51 starts last time out and pay to follow. 4.00
11 SIMPANG ** Another David Hill-trained veteran who is in solid form so must be considered. 9.00

Race 2

Some solid form to go on in this Restricted Maiden with nothing separating BEAUTIFUL DAY and ARC RAIDER at their last start where they finished a close-up second and third respectively over this trip. A lip separated the pair on that occasion and while BEAUTIFUL DAY has subsequently trialled nicely and must go close, he has a wide draw (12) to contend with so ARC RAIDER get this chance from gate 5.

BASILISK could beat them both. The 3YO had plenty of excuses last start where a check looked very costly and his very good work late suggests he wins this without surprising. SATELLITE WARRIOR and LADY COUNSEL two others that are in the winning mix on form and most others need to lift to play a part. Betting Strategy – box 1, 2, 3, 8 and 12 trifecta.

1 BASILISK *** Check looked very costly last start and good work late suggests he will bounce back and go close in this field. 4.00
2 BEAUTIFUL DAY *** Drawn wide but just missed last start similar affair and looked under a strong hold at Tuesdays trial. Can win. 4.00
3 SATELLITE WARRIOR *** Hung out badly and raced poorly on the Poly last start but turf form prior has him under consideration. 8.00
4 BURGUNDY PRINCE * Nothing when resuming and like to see something before considering. 100
5 GINGERMAN * Cheeky effort two start back but nothing last start and wide gate doesn’t help. 20
6 BALL AND CHAIN * Struggles. 100
7 BEBOP ** Solid without being a winning threat at his last couple but can include in exotics. 20
8 ARC RAIDER *** In the winning mix in similar affair last start and looks a big show here. 3.00
9 PROVOCATEUR * Race form poor but could improve with blinkers added. 20
10 WAIALAE ** Just fair on debut but had shown enough at the trails previously to think he has something to offer with race experience under his belt. 20
11 LUCKY RED * Winkers off but needs to show more. 100
12 LADY COUNSEL *** A long way off the good winner at his last start but 1400m suits and in the mix in this field with gate 1 a factor. 10
13 IMPRESARIO * Debut a shocker and hard to consider. 100

Race 3

This race could almost headline the card given there looks some serious types including some six last start winners, two of whom – ZAC KASA and LOVING YOU – winning well as the odds-on punters elect. ZAC KASA was first up after a spell with blinkers added when he beat a nice type in Lim’s Zoom with daylight third. M Rodd obviously stays on and from gate 3 they look very hard to beat.

LOVING YOU – a US-bred 3YO filly – is in better at the race conditions and, while drawn wide, she will go forward and looks like she has a big say in this finish. Of the rest, HYDE PARK won too well at his second start not to be a winning threat while IMPERIUM and BOY WONDER look progressive types. LORD O’REILLY is the other last start winner but may find this a tough ask with blinkers added dropping back from 1400m. Betting Strategy – ZAC KASA strong win.

1 BOY WONDER *** Broke maiden status in fine style last start in Class 4 Company and hard to beat at the race conditions. 7.00
2 ROMAN CLASSIC * Former Irish galloper who should need longer. 200
3 HYDE PARK *** Not in well at the rating/weight ratio but won too well at second career start not to be a big show here. 6.00
4 DESTROYER ECLIPSE ** Resuming after poor effort with support but worth thought on form prior. 50
5 IMPERIUM *** Had support when winning in a hard fought affair last start and pay to follow. 8.00
6 ZAC KASA *** Won like a good thing with very heavy support when resuming with winkers and hard to beat in this. 2.00
7 LORD O’REILLY ** Gets blinkers dropping back in trip after good win over 1400m and pay to keep safe from gate 1. 12
8 NEW SENSATION ** Resuming sans blinkers after a frustrating run of placings. Trials well enough to consider. 20
9 WAITAHANUI * Disappointing at his last two but gets blinkers so could improve. 50
11 SUPER DYNASTY ** Raced maiden from Australia who has trialled well locally but wide gate makes this tough. 50
12 LOVING YOU *** Won well on debut as the odds-one elect and will improve for the experience so has to be a show with no weight. 6.00

Race 4

A battlers mile and while none of the horses will ever be champs, some top riders are worth following. G Boss has a few Melbourne Cups under his belt and SATELLITE PRINCE showed enough last start over 1200m on the Poly to think he has found form and goes close over what is his favourite trip.

Another Melbourne Cup winning hoop in M Rodd goes on an 18-start maiden in KEY ON KODIAC and given the 5YO placed last start this trip, he has to be a show. V Duric hasn’t won a Melbourne Cup but the reigning Singapore Champion hoop is in red-hot form and will give BIG REGARDS every chance to knock in a well deserved win. Of the others, trainer Bruce Marsh is having a tough start to 2018 but ZAHIR is due and must go close with a lightweight. Betting Strategy – SATELLITE PRINCE win.

1 SATELLITE PRINCE *** Improved effort last start and will handle the step up to the mile. Can win. 4.00
2 BATTLE PLAN ** Did it tough but every chance last start. Could improve from gate 3. 10
3 BRIMSTONE ** Just battled last start but only placing this trip and gets the favours from gate 1. 12
4 HEPHAESTUS * Won a very weak one two starts back and then reverted to type. No. 50
5 KEY ON KODIAC *** Maiden who looks due and should figure in the finish. 4.00
6 BIG REGARDS *** Ran on very well against the bias last start and better suited on this Course (C) with tongue-tie added. 4.00
7 ZAHIR *** Foot on the till and has to be a show with lightweight. 4.00
8 SHABBAT * Long-term maiden and hard to have. 50
9 HOLY THOMAS * Beaten a long way into third last start but is on the improve. 20
10 PEREGRINE FALCON * Long time between drinks and easier to ignore. 100
11 SILENT CONNECTION * Visor off but hard to have. 100

Race 5

This Class 4 over 2000m is better than it looks at first glance with some very handy types looking suited at the trip and company. From the top, FUEGO appreciates both the drop in Class and the services of the leading hoop in V Duric and must go close with blinkers removed.

And the drop in class cannot be underestimated as JUSTICE FAIR showed last start when improving to finish third and he gets his chance stepping up to 2000m. O’REILLY’S DANCER wasn’t a mile away from the winner in Class 3 last start this trip and gets J Powell so looks a good each-way option in a field with depth.

But the horse that may beat them all is a 3YO in MR DUJARDIN. The NZ-bred gelding is an out-and-out stayer and while only having start four, he has showed this trip is his caper and the booking of M Rodd suggests connections think he can win this. Keep MILLENNIUM’S RULE in winning calculations and go even wide in exotics. Betting Strategy – O’REILLY’S DANCER each-way.

1 FUEGO *** Drawn wide but gets V Duric over a suitable trip down in grade so can win with blinkers removed. 5.00
2 JUSTICE FAIR *** Showed last start this company is his caper and 2000m suits so every chance. 5.00
3 MILLENNIUM’S RULE *** Should handle this trip and in form and has to a be show. 8.00
4 O’REILLY’S DANCER *** Form better than it reads, not far away last start in better company and can win this. 12
5 SHE’S THE ONE ** Very much appreciates dropping back to winning Class and looks a value hope. 33
6 YULONG HONOR ** Not a mile away last start over the mile and can improve again over this trip so keep safe, 12
7 RICH BEAUTY ** Always some hope without being a winning threat but Munro over 2000m looks a good combination. 20
8 MR DUJARDIN *** Progressive stayer who gets the favours from gate 1 and hard to hold out with M Rodd a factor. 3.00
9 PEGASUS JUNIOR * Not a mile away last start but easier to ignore. 50
10 MR HOPKINS * Maiden who struggles as a rule. 50
11 WEST NORTH HILL * Maiden who has shown glimpses but wide gate make this tough. 50
12 GALAXY EXPRESS ** Won in Class 5 last start and this is tougher but have to respect. 12
13 SUN EMPIRE * Can go forward but like to see in easier company on a leaders track. 20

Race 6

Not a lot of depth to this Kranji Stakes B and as such a very progressive Poly sprinter in KRATOS resuming looks the pick. The 4YO has won three times this trip in just nine career starts – all on the Poly – and given he has placed another five times (he only missed a cheque on debut as a 2YO), he is obviously a horse to follow and can win first-up with M Rodd to ride.

As mentioned there is no depth to this race but the speedster SEBAS has to be respected back to 1000m and he will give them all something to catch while AUTUMN RUSH has found winning form under the guidance of WH Kok and has to be respected. NOVA MISSILE looks the only other horse that wins without surprising although his wide draw is a concern. Betting Strategy – KRATOS win.

1 SEBAS *** Speedster who looks well placed back over 1000m and will look the winner late. 6.00
2 MIGHTY CONQUEROR ** Form better than it reads and will be running on late at odds. 16
3 NOVA MISSILE *** Wide draw is a concern but in form and race suits so must be considered. 4.00
4 AUTUMN RUSH *** Tested this company but found form and goes well for WH Kok so keep safe. 6.00
5 SUPERNOVA * Veteran who resumed with a good effort but this looks too short. 50
6 KRATOS *** Resuming. Very progressive Poly sprinter who would give this a shake with tongue-tie added. 2.00
7 OXBOW SUN ** First up run better than the result and can finish in the mix at odds. 33
8 PIONEER SEVEN ** Form reads terribly but not a mile away in similar affair three starts back so keep safe at odds back on the Poly. 33
9 SANDTOP * Needs easier and longer. 100
10 LIM’S SINCERE ** Only battled last start but always some show this trip. 33
11 SUPER SIX * Will appreciate being back on the Poly but tested this Company. 100
12 XIONG FONG * Goes OK on his day and handles the Poly but should need easier. 50

Race 7

A competitive Class three but with only a few major chances with most runners being more comfortable in a weaker grade. LIM’S SHOT is a class dropper and given he made some late ground last start on turf and is better suited on poly, he should be hard to hold off.

NORTHERN SUN charged home late to just miss in this class and over this distance last start; with a similar effort he should be hard to hold out. Amongst the others LIFE IS GAMBLE made some ground when resuming, BUENOS AIRES has placed at both outings in this class since resuming while SIAM SAPPHIRE has a good record at this trip and could improve. MACARTHUR has been improved by recent racing and his trial was solid, the trip suits and he could show up with 4kg claim a help with blinkers a factor. Betting strategy – LIM’S SHOT win.

1 LIM’S SHOT *** Made some late ground last start and better suited on the Poly down in Class. Goes close with 2kg claimer. 4.00
2 MACARTHUR *** Improved by recent racing and trial was solid. Last win was in class 4 over this trip and could show up with 4kg claim and blinkers back on. 10
3 SIAM SAPPHIRE *** Never looked likely as even money favourite when resuming but worth another look with that run under his belt. 10
4 LIFE IS GAMBLE ** Made some ground when resuming but drawn badly again so will need luck. 10
5 NORTHERN SUN *** Charged home late to just miss in this class and distance last start. Should be hard to hold out. 4.00
6 TERMS OF REFERENCE * Has struggled at recent outings and might need class 4. 20
7 HERO I AM ** Blinkers off and best form is on turf but rarely runs poorly and could be running on. 16
8 SACRED GALAXY * Resuming and trial was solid. Gets back in running and only wins have been over 1400m but could be running on late. 16
9 BUENOS AIRES ** Has placed at both outings in this class since resuming. Awkwardly drawn but claim helps and could run on. 6.00
10 ELISE * Recent efforts poor and might need class 4 and turf. 20
11 RIVER GOLDEN ** Caught wide and battled on in this class last start on turf and can improve back on recent winning surface. 16
12 SILKINO ** Racing soundly but likes to go forward and not helped by the gate. 20
13 CLASSIFIED * Recent form poor. Needs easier. 33
14 DRAGON SPIRIT * Has some speed and better suited over 1000m. 33

Race 8

The top two in this non premier Class 4 were major players in a better Premier Class 4 last start and could fight out the finish. MY HORSE led and was caught in the last stride when dead-heating last outing; he is suited here and with senior rider Nooresh Juglall replacing apprentice Noh Senari, will be hard to run down.

ARC TRIUMPH is racing consistently, he over-raced last start when beaten 1.3 lengths by My Horse; he drops back to his winning distance and should be prominent. The others have been racing in non-premier company and of those WHISTLING WIN disappointed last start but his previous two efforts were strong while DASH has run on solidly at his past two outings and he can show up in this field. Keep ALARANCH safe with blinkers and tongue-tie added. Betting strategy – MY HORSE win.

1 MY HORSE *** Led and caught last stride to dead heat last outing in class 4 premier. Suited here and with senior rider replacing apprentice will be hard to run down. 3.00
2 ARC TRIUMPH *** Racing consistently. Over-raced last start when beaten 1.3 lengths by My Horse. Drops back to winning trip and should be prominent. 4.00
3 SO CALLED * Maiden. Gets a gear change but needs to improve on efforts since arrival. 33
4 WHISTLING WIN *** Disappointed last start but previous two efforts strong. Has speed and should be prominent from good gate. 6.00
5 BEST WISHES * Has struggled since change of stables and only wins have been on turf. Needs to improve on recent efforts. 25
6 PURE JUSTICE * Has only battled at recent outings. Suited this trip but needs to improve. 14
7 HAYTHAM * Has been struggling but improves with upgrade to blinkers/pacifiers. 16
8 ROYAL FORTUNE * Raced prominently but dropped out last start. Hasn’t won for a long time and needs to improve. 33
9 DASH ** Has run on solidly at past two outings. Only win was at this trip and can show up in this field. 8.00
10 METTLESOME * Placed in this company two starts back but not helped by the gate. 20
11 ALARANCH *** Has speed. Gets blinkers and tongue-tie but not helped by awkward gate. Trip suits and should be prominent. 8.00
12 BAYMAX * Only win was at 1800m on turf. Might find these too sharp. 50
13 LET’S TALK NOW * Well beaten at past three outings. Needs Class 5. 50
