WINX AND HUGH BOWMAN
Winx has equalled Black Caviar’s record of 25 straight wins with an outstanding last to first victory in the $4 million Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick Saturday morning SA time.
Five years after Black Caviar notched up her 25th and final victory in the T J Smith Stakes, the Chris Waller-trained mare matched the amazing feat with a strong display against a quality field, defeating Gailo Chop and Happy Clapper.
In defending her Queen Elizabeth crown, Winx recorded her 18th victory at Group One level.
Jockey Hugh Bowman said it was an amazing performance by the mare, having spotted quality horses a 12-length head start.
“She overcomes everything,” Bowman said.
“She’s just an exceptional athlete, she creates so much attention, I’m just so elated, I’m so proud of her and I’m just so proud to be a part of it.”
Trainer Chris Waller was overcome by emotion post-race, stating he was simply relieved once the race was over.
“It’s hard to explain, we’ve got an amazing sport, it drives us all,” Waller said.
“It was great competition today. You can only get the best out of her when she’s running against the best.”
Gailo Chop set a solid tempo out in front while Bowman settled Winx at the tail of the field with Happy Clapper.
The Darren Weir-trained Gailo Chop gave a good sight, skipping clear early in the straight before the star mare made her charge down the outside.
Winx took over at the furlong mark, going on to put a gap of 3.8 lengths on Gailo Chop.
Happy Clapper ran another game race in third after being held-up early in the straight while Humidor finished off solidly in fourth.
