Ferraris brace for grandad

Tuesday 24 May became a red-letter day in the history of South Africa’s Ferraris racing family as apprentice jockey Luke Ferraris opened his winning account with a flourish – not only breaking his maiden but registering a double on the day.

Both winners were saddled by the rider’s famous grandfather Ormond. The young man’s father David – one of Hong Kong’s leading trainers – is visiting the country at the moment for the National Yearling Sale at Germiston. Dad was bidding for future champions and was not on course, but the family get-together later will have been a celebration of note.

The victories bracketed the meeting, coming in the first and the last races on the day. In Race 1, Luke Ferraris won on first-timer Vivir at odds of 22-1 in a Maiden Juvenile Stakes event. In Race 9, it was another outsider, Cool Dream at 18-1, who got home under a driving ride in a Maiden Plate.
