MIKE DE KOCK
Ken Nicol: Mike De Kock got off to a great start at Greyville, winning both of the early juvenile Listed races.
In the opener many people’s idea of the best bet on the card Firdoas asserted late under Randall Simons to get the better of gutsy top weight Mazari and take the Devon Air Stakes for fillies.
While the win was workmanlike rather than spectacular she is clearly above average and worth following.
Then in the Gatecrasher Stakes Gimmethegreenlight colt Barahin came from well off the pace to win easing up by over three lengths and mark himself down as a bit special.
He opened favourite, only to drift out to 9/2 in the face of heavy support for Dean Kannemeyer’s Fitwilliam, but came home like an odds on shot, and clearly gets on very well with Bernard Fayd’Herbe.
Interestingly his winning time was well over a second quicker than that recorded by the filly.
