Ken Nicol: Despite a rather tardy beginning, 57-20 favourite Celtic Sea ran on strongly to win the Grade 2 Golden Slipper for juvenile fillies at Greyville.
The Captain Al filly was carried out as they jumped, and found herself near the rear and racing wide, as Miss Khalifa got on with things up front, followed by Captain;s Princess, Temple Grafin and Red Al.
Indeed the early pace appears to have been too hot, as all the handy runners fell away, while the eventual first three past the post came from way back.
Recent listed Devon Air Stakes runner up Mazari came forward to join issue 200m out, and briefly looked a likely winner.
But wider out Celtic Sea had unfurled her sails under S’Manga Khumalo and powered past Tobie Spies’ filly, who had to settle for another stakes runner up berth. The margin was only a long head, but she appeared to firmly have the measure of her rival in the final strides.
Maiden Can You Feel It also ran on stoutly from the clouds in only her second outing despite racing very green, and looks one to follow.
Running Brave stayed on from midfield into fourth.
