Dawnbreaker to light the way

Dawnbreaker to light the way

Viv Greybe: Four-year-old Dawnbreaker, who has been a model of consistency since joining Gavin Smith’s stable, looks on target for a fourth career win at the Fairview Polytrack on Friday when teamed up with Aldo Domeyer in Race 6 and the main event, a MR 86 Handicap over 1300m.

This son of Trippi has not been out of the money in his seven runs since being gelded and stepping out for Smith. He was an encouraging second on grass at Fairview over 1200m and then justified favouritism with a resounding win on the Polytrack over the same distance.

Stepped up in class next time he was a bold runner-up in a 1200m MR 80 Handicap. His next mission was the WSB Polytrack Challenge which saw him finish fourth over 1200m and fourth over 1400m. Then in the final Leg of the Challenge when going off at long odds, he led throughout over 1600m and won decisively from his stablemate Breakfast Club.

Dawnbreaker held form well at the venue in his subsequent outing when finishing a creditable third to his classy stablemate Juan Two Three in a tough 1200m Pinnacle Stakes. This gelding will enjoy the extra distance this time and, with top-flight rider Domeyer up, the combination should be in the winner’s enclosure.

However, expect a bold bid from Yvette Bremner-trained two-time winner Pacific Spirit who will have champion apprentice Lyle Hewitson aboard and has the advantage of the best draw. This gelding has been threatening another win in recent outings. He was a runner-up in his penultimate outing and his subsequent run when sent off favourite and finishing fifth should be ignored as there was a report that he had over-raced and returned coughing.

Also to be respected is five-time winner Breakfast Club with the stable’s frontline jockey Greg Cheyne in the saddle. He was aboard the five-year-old four runs back when a clear-cut winner over 1400m in Leg 2 of the Challenge and the combination followed up with a second to Dawnbreaker in the 1600m final leg. The gelding confirmed his current wellbeing in his most recent outing when fourth with Cheyne up in a 1400m MR 88 Handicap on grass.

The pick of the others are Valentinik, Prince Of Orange and Lord Marshal.
