A mutually beneficial relationship

Ken Nicol: While the vast majority of Richard Fourie’s rides have been with the Snaith yard since the new season began, he was quick to stress he is not formally retained as their stable jockey when spoken to at Durbanville on Saturday.

“I am freelancing this season, but the Snaith’s and I have an association going back a long way. Obviously they have plenty of horses I want to ride, and they are happy to use me. I will be riding a lot for them but there is no concrete agreement” was the way he put it.

Jonathan Snaith said: “We have always had a good relationship with Richard, and with Grant (Van Niekerk) going to Hong Kong, he was the obvious replacement.

“He was our stable jockey in the past, and is a pleasant, decent guy who is easy to work with. He and Justin work well together, and as he is still young, we can look forward to a successful partnership in the years to come.”

The combination have certainly started the 2018/19 season with a bang, as the two Cape meetings so far have yielded six winners.
