Ken Nicol: Sean Tarry took the first feature on Summer Cup day when Cordillera got up late to win the listed G-Bets Stakes Gallop Secretariat Stakes for three-year-olds.
This was the opening leg of the Pick 6, which closed on a whopping touch over R7.3 million.
The prospects of a bumper dividend immediately looked bright, as the winner went off at 12-1.
Mike de Kock runner Blonde Vision had set a cracking gallop, and still enjoyed a three length advantage coming to the final 400m.
Cordillera had raced handy throughout, but it was only in the closing stages that he got the better of the game frontrunner, and then had to hold off the late attentions of another de Kock entry Viking Trail who came from further back.
Remarkably Gimme A Wave was fourth only beaten a length and a half after walking out of the starting stalls and being left quite a few lengths.
Young Luke Ferraris rode the winner, and as this was his 60th winner, his claim will fall away after this meeting.
This was Tarry’s third successive win, as he also took race 2 with hot favourite Mythical Bolt, and race 3, where Purple Diamond relished going over the minimum trip, and put a long disappointing spell behind him.
His spell of dominance was broken when Geoff Woodruff’s Schippers scored very easily in the Epol Magnolia Handicap (Gr 3) just over half an hour later.
Kissable set her usual rapid tempo, but the favourite raced just off the leading line, and the result was never in question after he took it up coming the the final 200m.
Ouro was a distant runner up, but might have got closer had he not been running around, and not fully focused on racing in the closing stages. A game Kissable held on for third.
