Larry Foley: With four meetings in just eight days, Singapore racegoers have certainly had their Chinese New Year fill and round off the celebrations with eight solid races on Friday at Kranji.
And while we like the aptly named Smart Investment in Race 1, two Kranji Stakes B races later in the card will keep the punters interested.
Race 5 on the card – the first leg of the Jackpot- is a KSB 1600m on the turf, and with the early favourite Time Lord likely to be withdrawn after returning a roarer last Friday, the smart Heliosphere looks hard to beat.
This four-year-old entire has hit the ground running in Singapore with two wins and a placing from his three starts and should more than handle this company with 1.5kg less to carry.
Claudia’s Beauty may be his biggest danger, as this mare will find this easier than her Gold Cup campaign and is fresh enough to think 1600m mile is ideal.
In the last race, Special King will also find KSB Company to his liking after a rare poor run in the New Year Cup and while yet to win beyond 1100m, he wasn’t far away when placing behind Jupiter Gold over 1200m on the Polytrack four starts back and that form will hold up here.
Best Bets: (Smart Investment Race 1, win), (Mark Eclipse Race 4, value) and (Claudia’s Beauty Race 5, value).
Bankers for Jackpots: Race 5 (1, 3, 6, 7 and 9), Race 6 (1, 2, 3, 5, 8 and 10), Race 7 (1, 2, 7, 10 and 11), Race 8 (1, 2, 3 and 6).

Selections; 3 SMART INVESTMENT – 4 HERO I AM – 5 SACRED TONIC – 7 HOST THE NATION
Not a lot of good form to follow in Race 1on Friday which should give SMART INVESTMENT a chance to break through this campaign. The now six-year-old hadn’t raced since May 2016 when he knocked in back-to-back wins so his first up effort – where he had traffic excuses not to finish in the winning mix – was excellent and with Duric up from gate 1, he can make quick amends. In his favour is his biggest danger – HERO I AM – has drawn gate 13 but his form of late has been good enough for a race like this and the experience of John Powell should give him every chance. Nothing else jumps off the page although the maiden SACRED TONIC has shown glimpses on the Polytrack so could show his best back on the all-weather track while HOST THE NATION is always thereabouts and he might not get a better chance than this.
Betting Strategy – SMART INVESTMENT win.
1 THUNDERSTRUCK ** The odd good run since arriving and could show up over 1200m on the Polytrack. 20
2 SUPER EMPEROR * Only battled away last Friday in similar affair and have to take on trust. 33
3 SMART INVESTMENT *** Had excuses (traffic) not to finish closer when resuming and hard to beat from gate 1. 3.00
4 HERO I AM *** Thereabouts without being a threat of late but will find this easier and can overcome wide gate and play a part. 6.00
5 SACRED TONIC ** Maiden who has been disappointing since placing three back but may appreciate another go on the Polytrack. 12
6 DAYUAN ** Will very much appreciate being back on the Polytrack with blinkers added but a better option over 1000m. 20
7 HOST THE NATION ** Had some support in similar affair when in the mix again without being a threat. Eachway. 6.00
8 VESONTIO ** Resuming with tongue-tie added after bleeding last start. Should need longer but can figure in tech field. 12
9 FIRST LIGHT * Disappointing last start over 1400m and should need longer than this. 33
10 MIKCAIPHO ** Shown improvement at two recent runs and can consider in this field. 8.00
11 EDDIE GRAY ** Best form has been on the turf but not a mile away last start and can include in exotics. 8.00
12 GOLDEN MILE * Did it tough last start so effort late suggests he is on the improve but may be looking for easier. 20
13 ROCKET FIGHTER * Only battling of late and needs Class 5. 33
14 PACIFIC MYSTICAL ** Ran on well enough to place in Class 5 first up and pay to keep safe. 12
Selections; 5 ASHHAB – 9 LEO – 10 LUCKY ENOUGH – 2 WELL DESERVED
While there are plenty of unknowns in this maiden and the market will be a very good guide on the day, ASHHAB should start a short priced favourite and looks hard to beat. This four-year-old just missed last start (after being gelded) and given he was due prior, he should win from gate 1 and get JP van der Merwe off the mark in Singapore. The challenge may come from his Donna Logan stable-mate, LEO. This four-year-old looks the best of the newcomers on trial form and should debut well with Juglall to ride from gate 6. What makes this race tricky is that there are four raced maidens making their respective Singapore debuts on the back of quiet trials and the market is the only guide on ORIENT EXPRESS, WELL DESERVED, SALVADOR and to a lesser extent, WIND TRAIL. Of the rest, LUCKY ENOUGH showed good improvement last start and can figure with the John O’Hara pair of STANDOUT and EXTRA win also in the exotic mix.
Betting Strategy – ASHHAB win.
1 ORIENT EXPRESS ** Raced maiden from NZ who placed at her most recent start. Market only guide on the back of quiet local trials. 12
2 WELL DESERVED ** Former Australian who placed three times form four career starts in moderate company. Hasn’t shown a lot at local trials. Market best guide. 12
3 SALVADOR ** Placed four from seven in Australia. Local trial OK but another with market best guide. 12
4 WIND TRAIL * Seven unplaced runs (mots over longer) in Japan before arriving and hasn’t shown up at trials. Later. 33
5 ASHHAB *** Just missed after being gelded last start and very hard to beat in this field from gate 1. 2.00
6 MAKE U FAMOUS * Long-term maiden who has shown glimpses but easier to ignore. 33
7 GOLDEN STATES ** Resuming after a solid run of form and had support last start. Drawn wide but can go forward. 12
8 JK FLASH * Hasn’t shown up at the trials. 33
9 LEO *** Solid effort at Official Trial and pay to watch for stable support. 6.00
10 LUCKY ENOUGH *** Improved effort last start after excuses on debut. Should figure. 8.00
11 STANDOUT ** Battled away on debut but has trialled well since and improvement expected. 12
12 EXTRA WIN ** Had support and missed a place last start but gets tongue-tie and could run a cheeky race from the wide gate. 12
13 CLOUD SHADOW * Showed nothing on debut. 100
14 OVER DE TOP * No. 100
Selections; 4 LIM’S PRIDE – 2 SUPER DYNASTY – 9 I’M INCREDIBLE – 11 LITTLE MASTER
You could make a case for all the runners in this Class 4 mile and with at least seven with serious winning hopes, there should be plenty of value about if we can find the winner. LIM’S PRIDE may not be value but this four-year-old looks a progressive type and there was enough to like about his last start gutsy win over 1400m to follow with gate 2 a bonus. SUPER DYNASTY just missed last start over 1400m and with Vlad Duric staying on, this four-year-old can win stepping up to 1600m with blinkers off. Those looking for value may consider LITTLE MASTER with no weight as he looked to have some in hand last start and I’M INCREDIBLE looks a likely type and showed last start he is more than capable in Class 4 Company. ALLEGRO, YAYA PAPAYA and PLATO are just three more to include with one eye on the tote.
Betting Strategy – LITTLE MASTER Eachway.
1 ALLEGRO *** Disappointing last start but won similar affair two back and worth another look. 8.00
2 SUPER DYNASTY *** Just missed with support in busy go last start over 1400m and pay to follow with blinkers removed. 3.00
3 YAYA PAPAYA *** Looked the winner at stages late in similar affair last start and happy to follow. 5.00
4 LIM’S PRIDE *** Gutsy effort to just win a two horse battle last start but looks progressive and can win stepping up to 1600m. 4.00
5 O’REILLY’S DANCER ** Only battled away when resuming but will improve with racing stepping up to 1600m. 20
6 PLATO *** Yet to win in Singapore but maiden win in Australia was over 1600m and ran on well enough first up to follow this campaign. 12
7 SUPER TYCOON ** In the mix last start over 1400m and might be looking for 1600m. Eachway bet. 12
8 HENG KINGDOM ** Has battled since maiden win but had support last start and could improve sans blinkers back on the turf. 12
9 I’M INCREDIBLE *** Loomed a big show last start over 1400m and showed he is more than up to this company. Follow. 5.00
10 SUN PITTSBURGH ** Traffic excuses not to finish closer last start and should be Eachway value. 12
11 LITTLE MASTER *** Never involved last start bur looked to have some in hand so worth another look. 12
Selections; 3 REALLY CAPABLE – 6 ALAMOSA EXPRESS – 1 MARK ECLIPSE – 5 KOKONI
Some important gear changes in this KSD with both REALLY CAPABLE and ALAMOSA EXPRESS getting blinkers back on. It is very significant with REALLY CAPABLE given he raced without blinkers last start over an suitable Polytrack trip and won a similar affair to this three starts back with headgear, so he wins without surprising. ALAMOSA EXPRESS also won recently in a similar affair to this and blinkers added could see a very forward run from gate 1. Nothing else jumps off the page although MARK ECLIPSE could be the big improver down in grade with the switch to 1400m on the turf in his favour and hopefully he can show his best at long odds. Of the rest, MY FRIENDS won in maiden company last start with SACRED DON not far behind and a horse like KOKONI may improve first up after a shocker with support.
Betting Strategy – REALLY CAPABLE win.
1 MARK ECLIPSE *** Form reads badly but could improve lengths over right trip on turf in suitable company. Claim helps. Value. 14
2 MY FRIENDS ** Finally brought his trial form to the races when breaking maiden status last start and can be considered. 6.00
3 REALLY CAPABLE *** Ignore last start over unsuitable Polytrack trip as gets blinkers back and won one of these races three runs back. Should go close. 3.00
4 SACRED DON ** Maiden who was in the mix with My Friends till late last start this trip and can figure. 8.00
5 KOKONI ** Resuming after a very poor run with (Moreira) support last start but has trialled well since and pay to keep safe with Duric up. 6.00
6 ALAMOSA EXPRESS *** Did it tough enough last start to think run OK and won start prior so worth another look with blinkers added. 4.00
7 CAI POH WANG ** Just missed two runs back on the Polytrack but super disappointing last start so take on trust. 12
8 ROAN RANGER * Form looks hopeless but race suits so could improve. 33
9 ELITE TRIPLEEIGHT * Only battled when blinkers went on last start and easier to ignore. 50
10 TIGER FORCE * Struggling. 100
11 ZAHIR * Found form in Class 5 and handles the turf but should need easier. 33
Selections; 7 HELIOSPHERE – 1 CLAUDIA’S BEAUTY – 9 STAR JACK – 6 MIKKI JOY
HELIOSPHERE has hit the ground running in Singapore and the former Australian should be all the rage in this KSB mile to knock in another win. The four-year-old entire is up in grade but drops 1.5kg after his last start win over this trip and will look the winner at some stage late. STAR JACK chased him home on that occasion and the Japanese-bred gelding looks an honest type who will work home strongly but he may need further to win again. On the other hand, 1600m looks perfect for CLAUDIA’S BEAUTY freshened with some quiet trials after a solid Gold Cup campaign and this five-year-old mare wins races like this with support likely. The big improver may be the Japanese-import, MIKKI JOY, who was disappointing at her Singapore debut but looks a nice type who can improve over 1600m on the back of a good trial. MIGHTY KENNY is also worth a look on best form.
Betting Strategy – CLAUDIA’S BEAUTY Eachway.
1 CLAUDIA’S BEAUTY *** Freshened with some quiet trails after good Gold Cup campaign. This 1600m suits and hard to hold out. 8.00
2 SARAAB ** Placed last start on the turf over 1400m but winning form is on the Polytrack. 12
3 MIGHTY KENNY *** Disappointing at his last couple but has trialled well since and wins race like this at his best. 8.00
4 ABSOLUTE MIRACLE ** Resuming in what is a suitable race with best work expected late but hasn’t won for two years. 12
5 KIRKS RYKER ** Disappointing at two runs since winning on the Polytrack and have to take on trust. 12
6 MIKKI JOY *** Former Japanese galloper who showed little at Singapore debut but has trialled well since and will improve over 1600m with a tongue-tie added. 12
7 HELIOSPHERE *** Smart type who has hit the ground running in Singapore with two wins from three starts. Follow. 2.30
8 TIME LORD ** Very disappointing last Friday (returned a roarer) over 1400m and have to take on trust (needs to pass a trial). 8.00
9 STAR JACK *** Placed behind Heliosphere last start and will run on well late again and figure. 8.00
10 MIGHTY EMPEROR * Solid last start but a better option on the Polytrack and happy to wait. 33
Selections; 5 ELITE SAINT – 3 NORTHERN SUN – 2 MASTER OF MALIBU – 10 TAICHI BELT
An odd-looking Class 4 Polytrack sprint with three horses resuming and two newcomers making the form lines difficult to line up. As it stands, NORTHERN SUN ran on well to just miss last start in a similar affair and picks himself. In saying that, he hasn’t won for over a year and will get heavy support so play with some caution. Of those resuming, MASTER OF MALIBU looks the pick given he bled last start but has trialled well since and has a winning first up record. Of the newcomers, ELITE SAINT won over longer in America before arriving but has trialled well enough locally to think he can win at his first start in Singapore with Vlad Duric a factor. Of the rest who can win, both TAICHI BELT and WHY NOT are in form and should figure while the big improver could be COUNTRY BOSS at odds given he drops in grade and has a 4kg claimer.
Betting Strategy – ELITE SAINT Eachway.
1 COUNTRY BOSS *** Form reads badly but raced on the pace last start and drop in Class has him under notice. 12
2 MASTER OF MALIBU *** Resuming after bleeding attack and won on debut so can consider on best form from gate 1. 8.00
3 NORTHERN SUN *** Hasn’t won for over a year but looks due and will figure late. 3.00
4 BARTIMAEUS ** Former Kiwi who ran third over 1400m at only race start. Local trial OK but may want longer. 20
5 ELITE SAINT *** Former American who won and placed over longer before arrival. Trials like he can play a part in this with Duric a pointer. 4.00
6 RISE * Former Malaysian. OK at recent trial but may struggle here. 50
7 DREAMWEAVER * Struggled since KSD win three starts back and not for me. 50
8 WHY NOT *** Ran on well to just miss over 1000m and pay to follow with handy 3kg claim. 5.00
9 LIBECCIO ** Resuming after breaking long overdue maiden status last start. Trials solid and can consider. 12
10 TAICHI BELT *** Honest and looks a solid each-way hope with no weight. 8.00
Selections; 1 ATHLETICA – 10 SUPER POSH – 7 MONTAIGNE – 2 REACH FOR THE SUN
Some call it “the ultimate gear change”, others the “unkindest cut of them all” and commentators may refer to a horse carrying “two stone lighter”. But whatever you call it, a horse being gelded often sees a result and happy to put mine on the line and call ATHLETICA the one to beat. This former Kiwi ran on well to place at his Singapore debut on the Polytrack before failing at start two on the turf and can make amends in this field with John Powell to ride. There will be plenty of speed on early with KING ZOUSTAR likely to lead and try to make every post a winner, while SUPER POSH back on the Poly should see him in the mix with Vlad Duric up. REACH FOR THE SUN and MONTAIGNE are two others who win without surprising and STAR EMPIRE could be the improver at long odds dropping to Class 4.
Betting Strategy – ATHLETICA Win.
1 ATHLETICA *** Kiwi who was gelded after just a fair run last start and gets blinkers. Can win on what we saw first up in Singapore. 6.00
2 REACH FOR THE SUN *** Drawn awkwardly but won one of these four back and close up at his last two. Can win. 4.00
3 STAR EMPIRE ** Form reads badly but drops in Class, gets blinkers and gate 1 will help. Keep safe. 20
4 KRANJI GOLD * Appreciates first up run but should need further. 50
5 ONE KINABALU ** Just battled last start on the turf but went close two back in similar race to this so keep safe. 12
6 JUMPIN JACK ** Just got the nod with support in KSD company over 100m but has won three of his last four so has to be respected. 10
7 MONTAIGNE *** Jockey reported issues last start and was in the mix till late and always happy to consider in races like this. 6.00
8 FORESTO ** Should need further but freshened with solid trial and could be included in exotics with a 4kg claim. 12
9 MYSTIC PRIDE * Needs further and turf. 50
10 SUPER POSH *** Disappointing last start on the turf but Polytrack form prior was good and should figure with Duric up. 6.00
11 KING ZOUSTAR *** Freshened and while give a sight from gate 5 and will look the winner late. 6.00
12 GOLDEN THUNDER * Needs easier. 50
Selections; 6 SPECIAL KING – 3 WEBSTER – 2 AUTUMN RUSH – 1 VIVIANO
A top quality race to finish off what has been a big week in racing in Singapore and while he was disappointing in the New Year’s Cup, SPECIAL KING can bounce back and win what looks a suitable race. Like a few of the fancied runners, SPECIAL KING hasn’t won beyond 1100m but always puts himself into races and should figure in the mix. AUTUMN RUSH is another that hasn’t won at this trip but is in form and will appreciate being back on the Polytrack. WEBSTER surprised a few by beating AUTUMN RUSH when resuming and he has won over this trip so has to be considered. VIVIANO appreciates the slightly easier company and will work into this late, while last start winners, EFFORTLESS and INVINCIBLE RYKER, can also be considered.
Betting Strategy – SPECIAL KING Win.
1 VIVIANO *** Honest, company suits and will be running on strongly. 8.00
2 AUTUMN RUSH *** Yet to win beyond 1100m but will appreciate being back on the Polytrack and in this is a long way from gate 2. 4.00
3 WEBSTER *** Beat Autumn Rush when first up after a spell and better gain over 1200m so pay to follow. 4.00
4 DANCE IN THE WIND * Freshened and has form over this trip first up but should need much longer. 33
5 KINGSMAN ** Rarely seen on the Polytrack but ran well at only start on track and showed enough last start to keep safe. 20
6 SPECIAL KING *** Disappointing in the New Year Cup but has trialled well since and can win on prior form prior. 5.00
7 DEE DEE D’OR * Resuming with solid trial under his belt but needs longer. 50
8 BIRAZ ** Freshened after racing “like a tired horse” last start and happy to keep safe on best Polytrack form. 12
9 INVINCIBLE RYKER ** Draw a big concern but in form and could show up with luck in running. 12
10 KOLOMBIA * Appreciates first up run and gate 3 helps but should need easier. 33
11 EFFORTLESS ** Broke through fro overdue win in Class 4 last start and honest enough to be competitive in this Company. 12
12 ZAC ACE ** Back in trip and gets blinkers and can be included in exotics off the back of some good trials. 12
13 SILKINO * Resuming and should need shorter and easier. 33
14 MOKASTAR ** Yet to win beyond 1100m but can figure in exotics. 20
