CAPTAIN AND MASTER

Bonginkosi Nkosi: Highveld conditioner Sean Tarry tops the national trainers’ log and is most likely going to add a few more winners to his rising tally at Greyville on Sunday afternoon, especially when Captain And Master returns to KwaZulu-Natal in Race 6, a Progress Plate over 1400m on the turf track.

Racegoers will be able to celebrate St Patrick’s Day at the course, with Irish folk singer Dave Monks and Marion Loudon in the Lightning Shot Bar. The bar will be transformed into an Irish pub with traditional Guinness and Jameson’s Irish Whiskey on offer.

Tarry has made no secret of the fact he rates Captain And Master highly. The son of Captain Al jumps from No 3 draw, and, considering he has registered an impressive victory and a second from two performances over this course and distance, a loss becomes highly unlikely.

Captain And Master was hampered in running very late in his most recent appearance, so the fact he finished 1.60 lengths behind Zouaves over 1400m is testament to his class.

Warren Kennedy is riding at the top of his game in KZN and should pose the main danger aboard Marchingontogether who, following a lacklustre performance in the Gauteng Guineas when three from last, impressively regained form at Scottsville in his follow-up race. Include this three-year-old in your Pick 6.

Jockey Muzi Yeni should be seen in the winner’s enclosure with the Jeff Freedman-trained Whiskey Road following the running of Race 9, a Maiden Plate over 1600m. This Master Of My Fate gelding has been the unluckiest of losers in his last two performances, forced to settle for the runner-up position both times.

In his defence, he was shockingly drawn both times and should finally shed his maiden tag because he is weighted to win and jumps from a decent No 6 draw.

Tarry-trained River Jordan showed a tremendous liking for the extra ground when runner-up last time, beaten a rapidly diminishing length by Pollard over 1400m on the Polytrack.

The manner in which he finished off his race strongly suggests he will relish the step up in trip.
