Soqrat, Eagle to clash again

Jack Milner : Round 2 of the clash between Legal Eagle and Soqrat is on the card at Turffontein on Saturday 30 March as both have been nominated to contest the Grade 1 HF Oppenheimer Horse Chestnut Stakes over 1600m.

Legal Eagle has made this race his own over the past three years, although last year he was put to the sword by Nother Russia.

In the end, class told and he fought on gamely to beat Mike de Kock’s charge by a neck.

This year Sean Tarry’s star has another De Kock-trained runner to beat and Soqrat does lead the head-to-head 1-0, as he finished ahead of Legal Eagle in the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate at Kenilworth.

However, as a result of the adjustment in the weight-for-age scale, Legal Eagle is 2kg better off for a 3.80-length beating so it should be an interesting contest.

Both trainers have some decent back-up. Tarry has nominated GBets Summer Cup winner Tilbury Fort and Cirillo, while De Kock has entered Cacapedia and Alyaasaat.

Geoff Woodruff has put in Zouaves and Al Danza and it will be very interesting to see how the former performs in this event.

Zouaves caused a major upset last time when he beat both Cascapedia and Soqrat in the Grade 2 Hawaii Stakes. This time, though, he will be 2kg worse off with Soqrat which is more than enough to make up the 0.50-length deficit, and he will be meeting a fitter horse who will be more suited by the extra 200m.

De Kock did mention he could well miss the Grade 1 SA Derby with SA Classic winner Hawwaam, but he has entered the son of Silvano for the R2-million race over 2400m. Unfortunately, he has landed No 15 draw which is not encouraging news for those who would like to see him run.

De Kock has also nominated Cape Derby winner Atyaab, Alyaasaat and Arlingtons Revenge.

Tarry has nominated SA Classic fourth-placed Zillzaal as well as Last Of The Legend, who ran a promising second in the Listed Derby Trial.

Tyrone Zackey-trained Gift Of The Gap, who won that race by 0.50 lengths, is also among the entries. ŸŸŸŸŸŸŸ

Tarry has a very strong hand in the Grade 2 Wilgerbosdrižft SA Oaks over 2400m with SA Fillies Classic winner Return Flight. She looks the horse they will all have to beat but there will be a lot of pundits who will favour Ormond
Ferraris-trained Blossom, who flew up late in the SA Fillies Classic to run third, beaten just one length.

Her mother, Cherry On The Top, won this race to complete a victory in the Wilgerbosdrižft Triple Tiara.

Supplementary entries close at 11am on Friday with declarations to be made by 11am on Monday, 25
