Blackball to pocket fourth win

GAVIN VAN ZYL

Viv Greybe: Gavin van Zyl-trained Blackball who found one better in his most recent outing is unlikely to miss this time when teamed up with the stable’s frontline jockey Warren Kennedy in Race 6 and main event, a MR 89 Handicap over 1700m at the Greyville Polytrack on Wednesday.

This three-time winner – all with Kennedy up – will relish stepping down in class after competing in feature events.

He comes off a promising last run when partnered by Sean Veale and finishing a 0.75-length second over 1950m at Scottsville. With better luck in the running this gelding should be in the winner’s enclosure.

However, he will have most to fear in Amor Ardiente (Veale) out of Belinda Impey’s stable. This four-year-old’s last win was three runs back when he scored fluently over 1600m at Greyville, which he followed up with creditable fourth and third at Scottsville. This consistent gelding should be in the final call again.

Another who could be involved in the finish is two-time winner Duke Of Spin (Mark Khan) who was a clear-cut winner three runs back at Scottsville. Then returning from a four-month break the colt finished fifth at the Polytrack and fourth at Scottsville. The three-year-old will be fitter this time and could make his presence felt.

Next best are Capoeira and Shukamisa.

Champion jockey Lyle Hewitson will be aboard some bright prospects in the minor events. He should strike aboard Michael Roberts-trained Dallas who contests Race 2, a 1200m Maiden Plate. This three-year-old was in the runner-up spot in his last three outings and will be tough to beat.

Go with Hewitson again in Race 4 when aboard Sean Tarry-trained Little Bristol in a MR 62 Handicap (F&M) over 1400m. This three-year-old was a decisive maiden winner last time with Hewitson up at the Polytrack over 1200m and stepping out refreshed after a short rest this filly should complete the double.

Hewitson could close the meeting on a winning note when aboard Shane Humby-trained Suzi Woo in Race 8, a MR 60 Handicap (F&M) over 1600m.

This four-year-old was a resounding maiden winner four runs back at the Polytrack and has been threatening another win – more so, last time when returning to the Polytrack and running on stoutly to finish a 1,75-length sixth over 1600m.
