Three SA stars on WC night

Three SA stars on WC night

Ken Nicol: Mike de Kock has three of our local superstars representing SA on Dubai World Cup night this Saturday.

First up is 2017 Vodacom July winner Marinaresco, who lines up in Race 3, the US$1.5 million Group 2 Dubai Gold Cup over 3200m at 2:50pm SA time.

The six-year-old gelding kept on pleasingly trying 2400m for the first time a few weeks ago, and if now staying the marathon trip must have a fair money chance.

“Marinaresco is absolutely flying. He’s fully fit now, and if he stays the distance we’re really hopeful he’s going to be a big runner” said regular pilot Bernard Fayd’Herbe from Dubai on Wednesday.

Then in Race 7 at 17:20 De Kock has a two pronged attack, when Majestic Mambo and Yulong Prince (formerly Surcharge) take their chances in the US$6 million Dubai Turf over 1800m.

Fayd’Herbe rides carnival debutante Yulong Prince, and had this to say.

“He’s been off for a long time, and it will be tough as he isn’t at 100% fitness, but he’s a very talented horse.”

Majestic Mambo has Anton Marcus up, and it could be significant that he forsakes a good few winning chances in Graded races at Turffontein for this single mount.

He made a fair enough local debut under Fayd’Herbe in the Gr1 Jebel Hatta over 1800m, and raced handy before not unexpectedly fading out.

The Mambo In Seattle gelding should now strip a lot fitter, and will be watched with keen interest.

“He gave me a good feel” commented  Marcus guardedly following his workout on Thursday morning.
