CANDICE BASS-ROBINSON

Viv Greybe: Western Cape trainers look on target to scoop top honours in the two Listed races on the nine-event card at Fairview on Friday.

The first feature event that comes up for decision is Race 6, the Glenlair Trophy (Listed) over 3200m and the one who fits the bill is Candice Bass-Robinson-trained one-time winner Ballad Of The Sea with national champion Lyle Hewitson in the saddle.

This Australian-bred four-year-old comes off two good runs at Kenilworth where he finished a two-length third in the Kenilworth Cup (Listed) over 3200m with Hewitson aboard.

The gelding followed up with a creditable fourth at Durbanville in a MR 90 Handicap over 1800m.

His earlier form when placed in three consecutive runs over 2400m in feature events gave an indication that he will be tough to beat over this marathon distance.

But expect a bold bid from Tara Laing-trained four-time winner Sheet Weaver (Chase Maujean). The six-year-old posted a gutsy win three runs back in a 2400m Pinnacle Stakes. After a short break he confirmed his fitness by running on stoutly from a slow start and finishing third in the 2400m Lakeside Handicap.

Also to be considered is Gavin Smith-trained three-time winner Evolver (Muzi Yeni). This four-year-old’s last win was in his penultimate outing when he came from last after a slow start to snatch victory over 2400m.

His subsequent run saw him badly away again and finishing a length second to Multi Gold in the Lakeside Handicap.
Another not out of contention is Sharon Kotzen-trained five-time winner Multi Gold (Charles Ndlovu). The four-year-old will be attempting to make it three wins in a row.

Leading Western Cape trainer Justin Snaith holds the trump card with two-time winner Madonna who contests Race 7, the East Cape Oaks (Listed) for three-year-old fillies over 2000m.

This Dynasty filly has been unplaced only once in her six starts – the last of which saw her come from near last to score by an increasing 2.25-lengths at Kenilworth over 1600m. She will relish stepping up the distance and should complete the double.

Making most appeal of the remainder are Jaleika, Just Chaos, and My Miracle.
