Larry Foley – Singapore: It’s a Good Friday to be at Kranji, with a nine-race day meeting on offer for holidaying Easter punters.
And with no less than four divisions of the Class 4 Polytrack sprints, there looks some solid races to follow on form but it might be a Class 2 Polytrack sprint in Race 6 – also over 1100m – that is toughest for pundits and tipsters alike.
The race has only attracted seven runners but given nothing separates five of the fancies on paper, it will pay to have a longer look on the day and go as wide as possible in any exotics bets – including the jackpot.
At first glance Nimble – with four wins from as many starts in Singapore – looks a horse who can go on with the job and likewise, Elite Power has started to string some wins together and has shown previously he is up to this company and can win.
Add Augustano and Webster into the winning mix – they both come into serious contention back on the Polytrack over a suitable trip – while Mokastar had excuses last start (lame) and also wins on best form.
If this race is too tricky, under the new rating bands, the Class 4 Polytrack dashes should favour those horses at the top of the ratings with Dusseldorf in Race 1, First Choice in Race 3, Whistling Win in Race and, to a lesser extent, River Golden in the last race, all some hope to turn around some poor form and win.
Best Bets: (Sacred Sham Race 7, Win), First Choice Race 3, value) and (Whistling Win Race5, value).
Bankers for Jackpots: Race 6 (2, 3, 4, 5 and 6), Race 7 (1 and 3), Race 8 (1, 2, 4, 5 and 7), Race 9 (1, 2, 4 and 5).
Selections; 1 DUSSELDORF – 3 SIAM WARRIOR – 9 ASTRA – 2 EFFORTLESS
While the jury is still out on the new rating bands for Class 4 races in regards to form, we have seen enough to think the good horses at the top of the weights have every chance and DUSSELDORF can win. The 5YO showed nothing when resuming in the ‘old’ Class 3 Company but he appreciates the run, gets Rodd and goes close from gate 3. EFFORTLESS is another that will appreciate being back in Class 4 and in his favour is a handy 4kg Riduan claim with market best guide. The interesting runner is the last start Class 5 winner, ASTRA. The 4YO broke his maiden status with that win and it was impressive enough to think he is up to this on the back of a hard-held trial with blinker/pacifiers added. There are two newcomers from Australia in the field and while SUN SPEAR might need longer, SIAM WARRIOR looks a handy enough type who has trailed well enough locally to win with market best guide. SUPER SIX the other that wins without surprising.
Betting Strategy – DUSSELDORF win, saver on ASTRA.
1 DUSSELDORF *** Nothing when resuming but gets better gate here in easier company. Can win with Rodd a factor. 3.00
2 EFFORTLESS *** Also coming off a shocker but gets a 4kg claim back on his best surface and grade suits. Goes close. 5.00
3 SIAM WARRIOR *** Former Australian who won two from 11 and local trials good enough to think he has something to offer at his Singapore debut. 4.00
4 SUPER SIX *** Honest and fought hard to win similar affair last start and pay to follow each-way. 6.00
5 SUN SPEAR ** Former Australian who won one from five at that was over the mile. Local trials solid but may want longer. 33
6 SILVER WAY * Resuming after solid first campaign that included win over 1400m. May need the run. 20
7 HERO STAR ** Only battled last start but some hope at each-way odds on previous form with 3kg claim and good gate in his favour. 12
8 MISS MICHELLE * Showed speed when blinkers went on last start and gate 1 helps but needs easier. 25
9 ASTRA *** Drawn wide but broke maiden status in Class 5 in fine style last start and well held at recent blinker/pacifier trial. Keep very safe. 12
10 PEGASUS JUNIOR * Back in trip and should find these too slick. 33
11 RICH FORTUNE * Pulled up lame last start when working home well but should need much easier. 33
Selections; 1 WELL DESERVED – 2 ASHHAB – 3 GLAMOROUS – 4 I AM INVISIBLE
This maiden really does look a race in three with WELL DESERVED, ASHHAB and GLAMOROUS all ready to win. And looking for a point of difference between the three, the gear change and claim for WELL DESERVED could make the difference. The 4YO arrived as a raced maiden from Australia and has shown enough at three starts to think he wins soon with Riduan (4kg) and blinkers added in his favour. ASHHAB also gets his chance after pulling up lame last start. The former Malaysian just missed the start prior (after being gelded) and while drawn wide here, he goes close with luck in running. GLAMOROUS the other with his foot on the till but gets his chance in this field with gate 2 a factor. Nothing else appeals although I AM INVISIBLE gets blinkers on the back of solid form and STAGESHOW gets gate 1 and Michael Rodd.
Betting Strategy – WELL DESERVED win.
1 WELL DESERVED *** Honest, is due and gets his chance with blinkers on with a 4kg claim. 2.60
2 ASHHAB *** Gate a concern but excuses last start (lame) and can win on what he showed two back on the Poly with tongue-tie added for this. 4.00
3 GLAMOROUS *** Looks ready to win, handles the Poly with gate 2 in his favour. 2.60
4 I AM INVISIBLE ** Solid without being a threat at three starts thus far but blinkers on first time suggests he could improve. 12
5 KING OF GLORY * Blinkers off back in trip and easier to ignore. 50
6 STAGESHOW ** A long way from the winner last start when placing in what looked a weak field but gets Rodd and gate 1 so keep safe. 12
7 SALAMENCE * Improving with racing but might need easier. 33
8 BELL AIR * Not with your money. 200
9 MONT CHOISY * Needs to show much more. 33
10 HOSTWIN CHEVALIER * No. 100
11 MARTELLO * Gets plenty of headgear after poor debut and only for the brave. 50
Selections; 1 FIRST CHOICE – 2 SOLDADO – 6 OL MATE BUZZER – 5 YULONG FAST STEED
Under the new rating bands, again the top rated horses appeal with the claimers getting some nice rides. Lee Freedman has N Zyrul (3kg) on FIRST CHOICE and the 4YO looks thrown into Class 4 after racing admirably in KSB Company only three starts back. His form around that run in Class 3 was also very good and he only needs to bring his best here first up after a short let-off to win this. AB Riduan and his 4kg are certainly popular with trainers and this time Shane Baertschiger has him on-board with SOLDADO a winning chance. The 6YO resumes after a bleeding attack but his form from his last campaign suggests is up to this with gate 1 a factor. The quality drops after these two, although OL MATE BUZZER had excuses last start (saddle slipped) and was in good form prior and YULONG FAST STEED may be a good value option given the race suits and he will be working home strongly.
Betting Strategy – FIRST CHOICE win, forecast with SOLDADO.
1 FIRST CHOICE *** Resuming with solid trial under his belt in what looks a very suitable race. Hard to beat on best form. 3.00
2 SOLDADO *** Resuming after bleeding attack. Form formalist campaign good enough to win this sans blinkers with 4kg claim. 3.00
3 MACH ** Won in easier Company last start over 1400m on the turf. Having first start on the Poly but trials well enough on the surface to keep safe. 7.00
4 ELITE SAINT * Former American who has been ordinary at two starts. Blinkers off but hard to have. 33
5 YULONG FAST STEED ** Form reads badly but race suits and could be working into the finish late at odds. 20
6 OL MATE BUZZER *** Saddle slipped last start and looked to have enough in hand to follow in what is a suitable race with gate 2 a factor. 6.00
7 SUPERSONICSURPRISE ** Might need easier to win but honest and a must for exotics. 10
8 RED CLAW * Battled on last start but has struggled since win five starts back. Only wins are on turf. 33
9 LUCKY SIX ** Looked to have some in the tank last start and always worth thought in exotics in races like this. 20
10 SUN ARES * Placed two back in easier Company and that may be his caper. 20
Selections; 2 TAVITO – 4 KUBERA’S CHIEF – 1 CERDAN – 6 DARCI’S BOY
Not many races uglier than this one and it may be TAVITO’s to lose. The 4YO won in the ‘old’ Class 5 three starts back and his efforts since in better company than this suggests he will be very hard to hold out with M Rodd to ride, albeit with 60kg to carry. The other Class dropper of some note is CERDAN who would go close on best form but his recent efforts have been poor so market support would be needed. On recent form, KUBERA’S CHIEF is the danger to TAVITO. The 5YO is a genuine Class 5 conveyance but apart from the two horses mentioned, this race is weak so he wins without surprising. Of the rest, DARCI’S BOY placed last start in albeit a weak one, while SCOOBY DOOBY DOO, GRIDIRON and DUYUAN could be included in exotics.
Betting Strategy – TAVITO win, saver on CERDAN.
1 CERDAN ** Form reads terribly but significant drop in Class and gets blinkers back so keep safe. 7.00
2 TAVITO *** Solid without being a threat in Class 4 but hard to hold out here from gate 1. 2.60
3 DAYUAN * Form looks hopeless but bad start costly last start and could go forward and give a sight. 20
4 KUBERA’S CHIEF *** Always some show in races like this and should figure with 4kg claim from gate 3. 4.00
5 LADY BOSS * Resuming with blinkers. Has speed and may appreciate Class 5 but struggles at the business end as a rule. 20
6 DARCI’S BOY ** Resumed with solid run over 1200m and worth another look in this weak field. 5.00
7 SCOOBY DOOBY DOO ** Form looks ordinary but will go forward and be in this a long way. 10
8 GRIDIRON ** Puts in the odd good run so can consider in exotics with headgear added in the weak field. 12
9 HIPPO VENTURA * Struggles as a rule. 50
10 SECONDWAVE * Veteran who is struggling. 50
Selections; 1 WHISTLING WIN – 5 MY BIG BOSS – 3 DAVID’S SLING – 2 RED DAWN
Once again a horse that will improve down in grade appeal in this Class 4 (division 3) Poly sprint with WHISTLING WIN the pick. The 4YO has been freshened after a moderate run of form but given he won in Class 3 some four starts back and gets a handy 3kg Simon Kok claim, he will beard to hold out on best form. The other Class dropper is RED DAWN and likewise, he does look out of form but improves with a claimer in easier Company. Two others that can win and look progressive types are DAVID’S SLING and MY BIG BOSS. Both should figure with DAVID’S SLING resuming after a very promising campaign that included his second career win, while MY BIG BOSS placed at Group level as a 2YO and will appreciate being back on his only winning surface. Nothing else appeals but BIG ELEPHANT gets blinkers and LUCK MAK MAK has trialled well so can improve.
Betting Strategy – WHISTLING WIN each-way.
1 WHISTLING WIN *** Just battling since Class 3 win this trip four starts back but has speed, will find this easier and gets a handy Kok 3kg claim. Can win. 3.00
2 RED DAWN *** Another who will find this Company to his liking and should improve with 4kg claim. 10
3 DAVID’S SLING *** Resuming after good a good campaign and hard to hold out with any luck from wide gate. 3.00
4 SACRED MAGIC * Will find this easier than recent outings but like see something before considering. 33
5 MY BIG BOSS *** Placed last start and only win was on the Poly so gets his chance on best juvenile form. 3.00
6 BIG ELEPHANT ** Looked to have some in hand late last start so is on the improve and will be long odds with blinkers added. 33
7 ZMAN * Drawn the ace but should need easier and longer. 33
8 SECRET SQUIRREL ** Did it tough when resuming and effort good enough to keep safe here with no weight from gate 2. 33
9 LUCK MAK MAK ** Late Alamosa Express. Recent race form ordinary but recent trial was good enough to think he is the improver. 33
10 UNCLE LUCKY ** Needs easier to win but always some show in races like this and a must for exotics. 20
Selections; 4 ELITE POWER – 5 AUGUSTANO – 2 WEBSTER – 6 MOKASTAR
Small fields often throw up trickier races than they should with luck in running often a factor not considered when doing the form. And with the exception of the out of form NOVA SWISS and the outclassed CAOURNN, all others can win which makes it even tougher for punters. A long look at the tote and parade ring on the day is advised but as it stands, ELITE POWER has found winning form, the race suits and he will be hard to hold out late if the race, as expected, suits back markers. Obviously NIMBLE is also in winning form and while this is tougher, it’s hard to fault his unbeaten run at four starts in Singapore and he has to be respected. Of the rest, nothing separates the likes of WEBSTER, AUGUSTANO and MOKASTAR who all win on best form and it may be a case of whoever has a good day, wins.
Betting Strategy – ELITE POWER win.
1 NOVA SWISS ** Form looks hopeless but appreciates first up run, claim and being back on the Poly with tongue-tie added. 20
2 WEBSTER *** Competitive without being a threat on turf last start but Poly form prior has him right in this. 5.00
3 NIMBLE *** Hard to fault winning form and has to be some hope in this field to continue his run. 5.00
4 ELITE POWER *** Found winning form and hard to hold out in a race that suits. 3.00
5 AUGUSTANO *** Another more suited back on the Poly over this trip and will figure prominently throughout. 3.00
6 MOKASTAR *** Excuses (lame) last start and wins races like this without surprising. 7.00
7 CAORUNN * Needs easier but will run on late if having a good day. 33
Selections; 1 SACRED SHAM – 3 THE BIG EASY – 8 IT’S GOT IT ALL – 9 JULIUS CAESAR
Some interesting newcomers from Australia in SACRED SHAM and IT’S GOT IT ALL make this a tough one for form analysts and the tote will give us a very good guide on the day. But as it stands, SACRED SHAM won four and placed another five times from 15 starts in Australia and his local strong trial suggests he can hit the ground running and carry on his dam’s (Mexican Rose) excellent Singapore record and win. IT’S GOT IT ALL has also won four (from eight starts) in Western Australia, but with no places to his name he may not be as honest as SACRED SHAM although his local trial also good enough to follow at his Singapore debut. Of those we know, THE BIG EASY had excuses not to win last start and looks hardest to hold out while both KISS YOUR SONG and JULIUS CAESAR both improve with blinkers added and have to be considered.
Betting Strategy: SACRED SHAM win, saver on JULIUS CAESAR.
1 SACRED SHAM *** Former Australian who has a good race record, has trailed very well locally and hard to hold out. 3.00
2 ANDADO * Has struggled since win over 1400m four back and hard to have. 100
3 THE BIG EASY *** Excuses not to win last start and hard to hold out. 3.00
4 GUILTY PLEASURES ** Recent form ordinary but very much appreciates being back on the Poly and could grow wings late so keep safe at odds. 33
5 KISS YOUR SONG *** Only battling of late but recent trial with blinkers suggests he improves and can win with the headgear added. 8.00
6 KRATOS * Struggling. 100
7 YULONG XIONG HU * Resuming and should need longer but did win at Singapore debut (albeit over 1400m) so market watch in order. 33
8 IT’S GOT IT ALL *** Former West Australian who won four from eight and local trail good enough to give a sight from gate 1. 4.00
9 JULIUS CAESAR *** Can be tough to follow but gets blinkers and could run a more positive race from gate 2 so keep very safe. 12
10 SIERRA CONQUEROR ** Has been disappointing since winning at Singapore debut but recent trial was good enough to keep an eye on the market. 12
Selections; 1 MIGHTY EMPEROR – 2 SOLO SUN – 5 SUN GENERAL – 7 BEBOP
Tricky race with no real standouts and none that make winning a habit. MIGHTY EMPEROR knew how to win but hasn’t for a long time; he will find this class easier and with the 3kg claim for Krishna, could rediscover some old form with the switch to the Poly putting him into the mix. SUN GENERAL – whose only win came before arrival in Singapore over 1600m – has finished in the top four at six of eight Singapore starts with two of those placings being over this trip; with Daniel Moor to ride he should be handy throughout and may break through. SOLO SUN is one-paced and has battled at recent starts but has a good record at the trip, placed here in a stronger race four starts back and despite the wide draw, could be running on at the business end. BEBOP is another struggling to win but has placed at his past three outings over 1700m; the step up to 1800m will be of little concern and he should be running on. Of the rest, STREET PARTY ran on in this grade last start over 1600m, the extra distance may suit and he should be handy throughout while the first emergency, MONEY KING, can win if he gets a start.
Betting Strategy – MIGHTY EMPEROR each-way.
1 MIGHTY EMPEROR *** Pay to ignore last three runs on the turf as better suited this Class and distance on poly. With 3kg claim can win with blinkers added on the back of a good trial. 6.00
2 SOLO SUN *** Another that improves lengths on the Poly in suitable company. Only Singapore win this trip an dose hope with luck from wide gate. 4.00
3 MR DAVID * Has struggled since arrival given no chance last start. Could improve but gate no help. 16
4 STREET PARTY *** Ran on in this grade last start over 1600m. Up in trip and should be handy throughout. 8.00
5 SUN GENERAL *** Yet to win in Singapore but regularly places at this trip and ran on well last start. Well drawn and should be handy throughout. 4.00
6 YULONG ADMIRAL * Won over 2000m in Ireland before arrival. Unsighted at Singapore debut but has trialled solidly since. Could improve over more suitable trip on the Poly. 25
7 BEBOP *** Consistent without winning. Placed past three outings over 1700m. Should be running on. 5.00
8 PARTY MAKER * Struggled to beat a runner home since arriving in Singapore from Japan. 50
9 O’REILLY’S DANCER * Recent efforts disappointing and only poly run a failure. 33
10 HENG KINGDOM * Placed in KSD over 1600m two starts back but failed to show up in only two poly runs. Might need easier. 33
11 LARRY ** Took a long time to win Maiden but two runs since fair and placed at both poly outings. Poorly drawn but could be running on with only 52.5kg. 12
12 KEEP WINNING * Won over this trip on turf two starts back in Class 5. Has placed on poly but will find this harder. 25
13 MONEY KING *** In solid form with win over 1700m on poly two starts back followed by narrow defeat on turf over 1600m. Well drawn and should be prominent. 12
14 CASH IS KING ** Poly form solid around this trip. Well drawn and should be handy throughout. 12
Selections; 2 CALCULATION – 5 SHOOT UP HIGH – 4 FRIENDSHIP – 1 RIVER GOLDEN
Another race where it is hard to find a horse in form and ready to win. The best horse in the race is probably the Lee Freedman-trained CALCULATION who won his first two outings and you could make excuses for his poor run this campaign. His recent trial was sound and with Simon Kok to ride he could be hard to run down. SHOOT UP HIGH has put in solid efforts despite being swamped late over 1200m at his past two starts; the drop back to 1100m will suit and he could be hard to get past. FRIENDSHIP ran on from well back when resuming over 1000m, he might like longer but from the good gate, a positive ride can get him in the finish. Of the others, on best form RIVER GOLDEN could figure with best work expected late, while CHOCOLATS best form is over longer but he trialled well and could sprint while fresh.
Betting Strategy – CALCULATION win, saver on RIVER GOLDEN.
1 RIVER GOLDEN ** Did nothing when resuming but will find this easier with best work expected late sans blinkers. 10
2 CALCULATION *** Has struggled since winning first two outings but did it tough when resuming and can show his best in this Company. 3.00
3 CHOCOLATS ** Resuming sans blinkers and trialling well but yet to win in Singapore and best form is over longer. 10
4 FRIENDSHIP *** Ran on from well back when resuming over 1000m. Extra distance suits. Would prefer 1200m but well drawn and should be running on. 6.00
5 SHOOT UP HIGH *** Has been found out late over 1200m at recent starts. Blinkers back on and should be prominent. 3.50
6 TAICHI BELT ** Gets blinkers after racing soundly without winning of late but best form is over longer on turf. 16
7 FLAUNT ** Broke through last start. Will find this harder and not helped by the gate. 16
8 DAVID’S STAR * Only battled at recent outings and best efforts have been on turf. 20
9 MY MIRACLE * Bolted in last start to win weak Maiden. Well drawn and has speed but will find this much harder. 12
10 LUCKY TIGER * Needs to improve on recent efforts. 33
11 YULONG SHENGDAO * Placed three starts back on poly over 1600m but subsequent form poor and will find these too sharp. 33
