Jack Milner: Hawwaam will be facing his sternest test when he runs in Saturday’s R4-million Premier’s Champions Challenge over 2000m at Turffontein.

This Grade 1 race on the Standside track will be the first time the three-year-old steps out of his own age group to face older and more experienced opposition in this sort of division.

He did face a couple of four-year-olds when he won his maiden on debut but they were not the strongest around.

Unfortunately, Hawwaam missed his warm-up run for this race when he was withdrawn from the SA Derby (Grade 1) after getting away from his handlers in the parade ring and bolting off to the start.

Trainer Mike de Kock did admit last week that missing out on that run has been a concern. “The plan was to run him in the Derby and then straight into this race so it has been a battle to keep him fit. Luckily I was able to give him a really good, hard run at Turffontein so hopefully that has done the job.”

Anton Marcus takes the ride on Hawwaam for the first time.

Bookmakers have made Legal Eagle the main threat but although Sean Tarry’s charge won this race in 2016, in 2017 he finished second, sand last year he ran fourth.

In his defence, this son of Greys Inn has not been beaten by far in this race but his recent form has not been that encouraging.

However, champions, as Roger Federer keeps proving, can never be written off and Legal Eagle is a champion.

Cascapedia is the stable companion to Hawwaam and while she has yet to win over this distance, she did run third in the G-Bets Summer Cup, beaten just 0.80 lengths, she is 5kg better off with winner Tilbury Fort and 4.5kg better off with runner-up Dawn Assault, so that should at least see her turn that form around. Gavin Lerena takes the ride.

A full field of 18 horses are carded to go to post for the R1-million Computafrom Sprint and this Grade 1 dash over 1000m looks wide open. Last year’s winner Attenborough is back to defend his title but there will be a lot of happy people should Trip To Heaven finally win a Grade 1 race.
