GAVIN LERENA
Gavin Lerena dominated the Election Day meeting at Turffontein, booting home five winners from six rides on an eight-race card.
The former champion jockey kicked off the meeting on Paul Peter-trained 6-1 shot Queen Of The Roses by 0.40 lengths – remarkably his easiest win of the five.
Then he got three short-head victories – in Race 3 on 8-10 favourite Tehuano for Lucky Houdalakis, in Race 4 on Corrido (11-2) for Peter, and in Race 6 on 3-1 favourite Lake Kinneret for St John Gray – the latter surviving an objection.
Lerena wrapped up his quintet on Elusive Butterfly (3-1) for Houdalakis in the seventh race.
The rider’s only miss was in Race 5 – aboard Gray’s 18-10 favourite Certifiable.
The five-timer brought Lerena’s winning total for the season to 138 and he remains in fourth place on the jockey championship log – behind Muzi Yeni (160 wins), Anton Marcus and Lyle Hewitson.
