Vulcan Grand Choice at Kranji

Vulcan Grand Choice at Kranji

Larry Foley – Singapore – As the days count down to the 2019 Kranji Mile on Saturday 25 May, a boutique eight-race Friday card looks a good one for punters.

With some very open and competitive racing of late, winners have been tough to find but while most of the fields today have depth, there do look to be some horses who should win on race and trial form.

In the opening race JK Formidable might not be a good thing on race form but a recent nice trial suggests this maiden can win in Class 5 Company and he may well give a sight over 1100m with the booking of John Powell a factor.

In Race 2, John Powell is again the jockey to follow and Vulcan looks very hard to beat at his Singapore debut.
The former Kiwi just missed at his only race start in New Zealand and his impressive recent trial with blinkers added good enough to win for the bang-in-form Baertschiger stable.

And another from the trials who can win is Grand Choice resuming after a spell in Race 5. This four-year-old speedster also has some pretty good race form to his name from his three career starts but it is a couple of very nice trials suggest the break has improved him and he looks a serious winning hope.

Best Bets: (VULCAN Race 2, Win), (GRAND CHOICE Race 5, Win) and (JK FORMIDABLE Race 1, value).

Bankers for Jackpots: Race 5 (1, 2, 3 and 6), Race 6 (1, 2, 6, 7 and 9), Race 7 (1, 2, 3 and 7), Race 8 (3, 5, 7 and 8).

Please note the odds listed are “reference odds” only.

A couple of maidens up against some Class droppers make this opener a tough one for punters but with a nice trial under his belt, JK FORMIDABLE could be the one to beat. The 4YO is yet to win in some six career starts but showed enough with blinkers added in this company last start to follow on the back of that nice recent trial with the experienced John Powell a factor. Another significant jockey change also puts HIGH STREET into winning calculations. Glen Boss has a good winning record on the 6YO and he looks well placed back in Class 5 to show his best. AABIR is a maiden who was disappointing last start but that was after a tough run on the turf and his Poly run two back suggests he can win if having a good day. GOLDEN WIN is another maiden who can win on best form with gate 1 a big factor today after jumping from wide alleys at some recent runs. Throw OCEAN MASTER down in grade into the mix.

Betting Strategy – JK FORMIDABLE win.

1 AABIR *** Did it tough on the turf last start and best runs have been on the Poly. Class 5 helps too. Can win. 5.00
2 HIGH STREET *** Recent form only fair but significant jockey change drop to Class 5 suggests improvement. 4.00
3 OCEAN MASTER *** Returned a roarer last start so forget as will win in Class 5 with tongue-tie added. 12
4 MINGS MAN * Disappointing last start and better on turf over longer. 20
5 GOLDEN SPARK ** Best form is over 1000m but Poly and Class suits so should be competitive. 12
6 GOLDEN WIN *** Maiden who has had his chances but gate 1 suggests he will give a bold sight. Keep safe. 6.00
7 SHE’S THE ONE * Class 5 helps but needs longer to be competitive. 33
8 THOTH WARRIOR * Not a mile away two back but disappointing last start so easier to ignore. 33
9 JK FORMIDABLE *** Maiden who has shown enough to win races like this and recent nice trial suggests he goes close here with tongue-tie removed. 4.00
10 ALARANCH * Speedster who was first beaten last start over 1000m so this will test. 20
11 SPECIAL RAIN * Drawn wide and needs to be having a good day. 33
12 MAKE U FAMOUS ** Not a mile away last start (and was a roarer) and could consider from nice alley with headgear removed. 15
13 MAGIC PAINT * Coming off a shocker and easier to ignore. 50
14 BRING ME JOY ** Disappointing last start but was in solid form prior so can include in exotics. 20

A top heavy Restricted Maiden field with four serious hopes, two that could be included in exotics and the rest looking hopeless on exposed form. Of the four that can win, a newcomer to Singapore in VULCAN could be hard to beat after an impressive recent trial. The former Kiwi just missed at his only start back in NZ and with blinkers on for his Singapore debut, he can break his maiden for an in-form stable. Not much separates the other three winning hopes in KUDA BAGUS, GAMELY and YULONG EXPRESS, as all look due with support likely. Of the trio, KUDA BAGUS may be the best value and is the improver after doing it tough last start before running on well late. FIGHT TO VICTORY and MY BOSS for exotics.

Betting Strategy – VULCAN win, saver on KUDA BAGUS.

1 KUDA BAGUS *** Excuses when running on last start, will handle the Poly and can win with 3kg claim. 6.00
2 VULCAN *** Impressed at recent trial when blinkers added, stable in form and hard to beat. 3.00
3 YULONG EXPRESS *** Has shown more than enough at three starts to think wins soon with forward run expected from gate 3. 3.00
4 GAMELY *** Refusing to run a bad race but also refusing to win. Has to break through soon and gate 2 helps. 4.00
5 FIGHT TO VICTORY ** Honest without being a winning threat of late but gets upgrade to blinkers/pacifiers and can figure. 8.00
6 MY BOSS ** Should need longer on what he showed last start but gets blinkers keep safe. 12
7 FLYING SKY * No. 50
8 DARK KNIGHT * Hard to have on debut effort. 50
9 PERFECT * Did not show up at trial. 50
10 ANGEL’S CHOICE * Gets blinkers after poor debut and tote only guide. 50

One of only two races on the turf tonight and given the E Course (long) is in use, we will concentrate on horses that race on the pace. RAHEEB ticks that box and after looking extremely comfortably when winning easily last start and he might just go forward with a 2kg claimer on board and be hard to run down. EASTIGER will also go forward and may even lead from gate 1 and while he is honest at this level, if he does get it relatively easy out front, he could very well pinch this. While these two may race one and two in running, OVERCOMING and WIND OF LIBERTY will both be handy and should have a say. Both have had two starts in Singapore with WIND OF LIBERTY improving at be in the winning mix at his last run so has to considered here, while OVERCOMING was disappointing last start with support but is some show on his Singapore debut run. Market best guide on the rest.

Betting Strategy – RAHEEB win.

1 RAHEEB *** Won comfortably last start on the Poly in Novice company, has won on the turf and forward run expected here. 3.00
2 WIND OF LIBERTY *** In the winning mix over 1400m last start and can figure if ridden positively from wide gate. 4.00
3 SACRED MAGIC ** Recent form reads badly but looked to have some in hand last start and race suits. Value. 20
4 SUPER TYCOON ** Ran on well enough last start to place but will need to be handier to have a winning chance on the E Course. 8.00
5 EASTIGER *** Always looks some hope and races on the pace so can consider from gate 1 on this track. 8.00
6 ELITE SAINT * Gets tongue-tie but needs to show more. 50
7 STORM TO WIN * Has struggled at two starts since maiden win but that was this trip so could improve. 20
8 THE CAPITAL * Goes OK on his day but disappointing last start and may need longer again with blinkers off. 12
9 ONE FORCE ** Struggling at his last couple but looked to have something in hand last start and can go forward so keep safe. 20
10 OVERCOMING *** Disappointing last start with support but worth another look on strong debut effort. 8.00
11 SILVER JOY ** Had some in hand last start and 1400m will suit but may need easier. 20
12 DREAM BIG * Reassess in Class 5. 33
13 SUN PITTSBURGH * In solid form and will be running on but not suited by the E Course. 20

Plenty of unreliable types in this Class 5 field and it will be a case of whoever brings their best form wins. MONTRER is a five-start maiden who has had a crack in Class 5 previously and while he showed nothing on that occasion, his effort last start when running on well to place was promising and Michael Rodd could be just what the doctor ordered. Another maiden in CLARTON STAR is also not without a chance at start 12 and given he usually runs on well, the 1700m will suit. The best horse in the race (nothing to hang your hat on) is probably YULONG SHENGDAO and happy to think he appreciates Class 5 over this trip and could be the one they have to run down. Nothing else appeals although you can include DRAGONITE, MA YOU CAI and WALTERS BAY in exotics.

Betting Strategy – small win MONTRER.

1 SUN DRAGON * Drops in Class but hopeless on form. 33
2 YULONG SHENGDAO *** Not a mile away last start in this company and better suited over this trip. Can win. 3.00
3 AVENGERS HERO ** Swooper who will be in the winning mix if race run to suit. 6.00
4 EXCELLENT MOON * Blinkers to visor but needs to improve. 33
5 MONTRER *** Drawn wide but gets senior hoop and showed enough when running on last start to seriously consider in this field. 4.00
6 SCOOTER * Struggles. 33
7 CLARTON STAR *** Maiden who ran on last start and extra trip suits so goes close. 6.00
8 DRAGONITE ** Well beaten when placing over the mile last start but gets gate 1 and this field is not strong. 6.00
9 MA YOU CAI ** Coming off a shocker but does mix his form so keep safe with one eye on the market. 20
10 COGNITIVE INTACT * Hard to have. 33
11 WALTERS BAY ** Thirty-start maiden who has found a weak enough race to include in exotics. 20

There is enough early speed in this maiden to think it will be an extremely spread out finish but hopefully the one that can lead and go on with the job is GRAND CHOICE. The 4YO placed at his two starts in 2018 (and one in 2017) and while struggling at the business end at his last start, his recent trials have been excellent and he might just be too good for this lot on what he has shown. PURE SPARK is also resuming after a good first campaign and has plenty of speed and has to be respected, while WELL DESERVED is also due and (albeit coming off a shocker) with Duric on his back a factor. The only other horse that wins without surprising and may benefit from a cracking early pace is STRAP MARKS who debuted well over 1200m and has always shown enough at the trials to think he wins races like this. Market best guide on the debutante, AMAZING CHOICE, and the rest may struggle.

Betting Strategy – GRAND CHOICE win.

1 WELL DESERVED *** Shocker last start with heavy support but was due, 1000m on the Poly suits and can win with Duric a factor. 3.00
2 GRAND CHOICE *** Resuming. Speedster who was also due, is trialing super and tough to catch. 2.50
3 PURE SPARK *** Resuming. Another speedster who has looked due and gets the favours from gate 2 on the back of solid trials. 6.00
4 AMAZING CHOICE ** 4YO who has trialled well enough to consider on debut with market best guide. 12
5 MACAVITY * Resuming after long break. Shows potential at the trials but struggled at the races. Take on trust. 20
6 STRAP MARKS *** Looked the winner at stages on debut over 1200m with support on the back of some good trails so can consider this trip and track. 6.00
7 SPEED UP * No. 50
8 ELCARIM WIN * Hard to have on what we have seen. 50
9 SHAMARMAN ** Resuming after excuses on debut before showing speed at his most recent run. Keep safe from gate 4 on the back of a good trial. 20
10 LADY BOSS * Needs a demotion. 100

A terrific handicap where some serious horses in DISTINCTIVE DARCI and CONSTANT JUSTICE have 60kg and 57kg to carry respectively, while two smart Poly sprinters in SPECIAL KING and WEBSTER are on the minimum. And while the two top-weights can win on best form, SPECIAL KING first up on the back of a good trial could be the one to pass late. The 4YO showed last campaign he is up to this level and from gate 1 he should give a sight. WEBSTER may be the value pick given the 5YO often flies under the radar at this level and loves the Poly, so must be an each-way show at odds. You have to respect the two good horses mentioned who both appreciate a sighter on the turf and the switch back to the Poly while most others some hope on best form with MARINE TREASURE the smokey at hopefully each-way value.

Betting Strategy – SPECIAL KING win, saver on WEBSTER.

1 DISTINCTIVE DARCI *** Has a good horses weight to carry but appreciates first up turf run, loves the poly and gets headgear back on. Keep safe. 5.00
2 CONSTANT JUSTICE *** Another who appreciates a turf sighter this campaign and can win back on the Poly. 5.00
3 SUPER WINNER ** Recent turf form poor but will enjoy getting back onto the Poly where he used to dominate. Value. 12
4 SKYWALK ** Resuming after a poor run of form but always trials well enough to consider. 12
5 SUPER FORTUNE * Not at his best of late and prefer others. 33
6 WEBSTER *** Outclassed in the Rocket Man Sprint but will be more than competitive back on the Poly at this level with 50kg. 8.00
7 MARINE TREASURE *** In form, has placed at this level previous and should figure. 12
8 ONLY WIN * Resuming after very good Derby campaign and may find this too short. 33
9 SPECIAL KING *** Resuming with nice trial and show last campaign he should win at this level. Big show from gate 1. 3.00

There are no less than three last start winners in this Class 4 Poly mile and while the bang-in-form SPUR ME ON will find this tougher than Class 5 and FORESTO has 3.5kg extra to carry, CROUCHING SUN looks very well placed with 54kg. The 4YO fought hard to beat the veteran SUPERNOVA in a similar affair to this last start but the fact he gets in with half a kilo less with the 3kg claimer on-board, he could be hard to beat. In saying that, FORESTO won very well last start and is obviously found form, while SPUR ME ON has no weight and is gunning for a hat trick so could surprise. But it may be the top-weight in MIGHTY EMPEROR who wins. The 7YO just missed in this Company last start and the switch to a senior (top) hoop in Michael Rodd is a factor. Of the rest, SUPERNOVA has forgotten his age and is an each-way hope, as is MONEY KING.

Betting Strategy – SUPERNOVA each-way.

1 MIGHTY EMPEROR *** Just missed last start over 1800m but mile no problem on the back of a good trial with switch to senior top hoop a factor. 4.00
2 SUPERNOVA *** Veteran who had excuses not to be in the mix last start and this race suits. Each-way-all-the-way. 12
3 ACROSS THE SEA ** Only battled at his last couple and drawn wide here but will find this easier and pay to keep safe. 15
4 FORESTO *** Backed up an improved run with a very strong win in similar affair and must be respected with an extra 3.5kg to carry. 5.00
5 FLYING YELLOW * Only battled this company on turf after maiden win on Poly so could improve back on the all-weather. 33
6 SMILING PROUD * OK two back but having first start on the Poly and prefer to watch. 33
7 CROUCHING SUN *** Turned some good form into a nice win in similar affair to this and drops 0.5kg with the handy claim. Can win again. 3.00
8 ANCIENT WARRIOR ** Battled late behind Foresto after leading last start but worth another look with visor added back to the mile. 12
9 IMPLEMENT ** Improving with racing and step up to mile looks ideal. Watch market. 20
10 MONEY KING ** In solid form with win over 1700m on poly two starts back followed by narrow defeat on turf over 1600m. Each-way. 12
11 SPUR ME ON ** Will find this harder than Class 5 and drawn wide but back-to-back strong wins suggests he is worth another look with no weight. 12
12 KHUDAWAND * Gate 1 helps but needs easier. 100
13 SUN SPEAR * Will improve over this trip but like to see more before considering. 33
14 YULONG HONOR ** Improved effort last start and worth following on that effort. 20

The second (and obviously last) turf race on the card and hopefully TRAPIO can send punters home happy. The 3YO broke his maiden status over this trip back in October 2018 but his win and good placing at two starts this campaign suggests he is a horse to follow and he will figure prominently on a track that suits. With the E Course on-pace bias a factor, we will also seriously look at CARIBBEAN LADY who has found winning form, can lead and will give a sight with CC Wong retaining the ride. Of the rest, SILENT FORCE had respiratory issues last start but is a big show on that he showed two back at his Singapore debut, while PER INPOWER will find this easier than 3YO Group Company and is worth a look. The race has depth so go as wide as the budget permits in exotics.

Betting Strategy – TRAPIO win.

1 ATHLETICA ** In good form over this trip with a win on poly and turf placing at past two starts. Recent trial sound. Can be slowly away but should be closing late but E Course may not suit. 6.00
2 GOLD STRIKE ** In form and ready to win but drawn wide and would need a positive ride to be a winning show on the E Course. 8.00
3 TRAPIO *** Returned in good form, race suits and can race on pace and win. 5.00
4 DRAGON HIGH ** Only battled last start but form prior in easier company was good and recent trial suggests he is competitive. 12
5 SILENT FORCE *** Respiratory excuses when disappointing last start so pay to forgive as can win on what he showed at Singapore debut. 8.00
6 MATSURIBAYASHI * In solid form but drops back significantly in trip and prefer others. 20
7 PER INPOWER *** Had an ambitious crack at the 3YO Singapore Classic and excuses for poor showing so can forget and consider on good form prior in this company with winkers to blinkers. 8.00
8 CARIBBEAN LADY *** Found form, can lead and hard to pass on the E Course. 5.00
9 MY FRIENDS * Drawn wide and looking for easier. 33
10 ELITE BEAST ** Just battling of late but race suits and could improve with gate 2 a factor. 20
11 MILITARY CHAIRMAN ** Excuses last start after breaking maiden over the mile and will be competitive with no weight. 12
12 NADEEM SAPPHIRE ** Trip suits and gate helps and may be a good value option in exotics. 20
13 THEAGENESOFTHASOS * Struggling but drop back in trip and switch to turf could see improvement. 33
