Hawwaam and his 3-10 odds for the Daily News 2000 might have hogged the spotlight this week, but there is plenty of very competitive racing elsewhere on Saturday’s card for the big Greyville meeting.
Notably, there is the Woolavington 2000, which, like the Daily News, is a Grade 1 contest and is shaping to be just as thrilling.
Top fillies Front And Centre and Return Flight bump each other in something of a Cape Town versus Joburg showdown – or a “battle of the training titans” with Brett Crawford and Sean Tarry saddling the respective adversaries.
The fixed-odds betting reflects how well matched the two runners are in the minds of punters, with both backed in to 28-10.
It is far from being a two-horse race, though, with Candice Bass-Robinson’s Santa Clara and Mike de Kock’s new recruit Blossom not far behind on the boards.
The third feature race on the programme, the Grade 3 Lonsdale Stirrup Cup over 2400m, shapes up as even more competitive, with Noble Secret, Strathdon, Roy’s Riviera, Silver Rose and Gimme One Night attracting support.
This is the first major stayers’ race of the season – not to mention a chance for fringe Vodacom Durban July candidates to make an impression – so the contest will be ferocious.
