Barahin set for Jubilee win

BARAHIN(L) BEATS SOQRAT

Bonginkosi Nkosi: National jockeys’ championship title chase contender, Anton Marcus, rarely travels to Johannesburg without returning to KwaZulu-Natal with a winner or two.

Marcus looks sure to be seen in the winner’s enclosure when he reunites with the Mike de Kock-trained Barahin in Sunday’s Jubilee Handicap over 1800m on the Turffontein Standside track.

Punters should take cognisance of the fact the this Grade 3 is one of the main qualifying races for the R4.25-million Vodacom Durban July to be run on 6 July.

Sceptics of Barahin, a three-year-old son of Gimmethegreenlight, were turned into full-blown believers at the end of his two-year-old career when concluding a hat-trick of wins with a gutsy 0.05-length triumph in the Grade 2 Golden Horseshoe at Greyville – defeating stable companion and Equus Champion Soqrat!

We last saw him in action in the SA Classic when although beaten 5.75 lengths by Hawwaam, he was well clear of the field, which included hard knockers like Zillzaal and National Park.

De Kock’s charge returns from a 99-day stint off the racetrack but that shouldn’t raise too many red flags simply because he ran a game third in the SA Guineas – beaten 4.80 lengths by National Park – despite returning from a lengthy eight-month layoff in penultimate outing.

What appears the real chink in his armour is the wide No 11 draw in this 12-horse field.

Conditioner Gary Alexander has made no secret of the fact he believes 2018 SA Derby winner, Hero’s Honour, is a worthy Durban July candidate, so he will want this son of Await The Dawn to win this R250 000 Grade 3 contest, so he can secure his place.

Hero’s Honour has won three of his last four starts and you can put a line through his latest performance when beaten 3.30 lengths into third place by Infamous Fox – who renews rivalry – because he was returning from a layoff.

He is now 2kg better off with Candice Dawson’s charge and from a No 7 draw looks the logical danger to Barahin. Make sure you include Hero’s Honour in your Pick 6.
