Grandissimo can go distance

Brendan Gaillard: Every year Fairview is host to the longest horse race in South Africa, the Port Elizabeth Gold Cup over 3600m, and this year the race looks an open contest.

But one runner who could provide value on Friday evening is Yvette Bremner-trained Grandissimo, as he looks to have this race as a one of his targets.

This Biarritz gelding has probably been in need of both of his recent runs but it is the step up in distance that looks tailor-made for him as the last time he won was over 2800m, in October last year.

This five-year-old gelding won full of running that day and this longer distance should not be a problem.

The biggest threat could come from the much-improved Onesie. This mare has struck form with two nice wins in her last two starts, one of those wins coming over 3200m. A massive penalty for that win would have anchored most horses but she defied the 20-point obstacle and won even easier over 2200m last time out.

It will be interesting to see if she can overcome the seven-point penalty that arose out of her last race.

In Race 6 over 1400m, trainer Alan Greeff has a decent hand with fillies Brandina and Luna Wish, but the manner in which Luna Wish brushed her stable companion aside last time out over this course and distance suggests she might be hard to beat.

Jockey Bernard Fayd’Herbe is riding at the top of his game and from a reasonable draw he will give her every assistance from the saddle.

Brandina always gives of her best and is possibly the biggest danger.
