MARCO VAN RENSBURG
Jockey Marco van Rensburg and trainer Weiho Marwing teamed up to land the Grade 2 Post Merchants over 1200m with La Bella Mia at Greyville on Friday night.
The four-year-old daughter of Gimmethegreenlight, who paid R20 for a win on TAB, held off another outsider in Wynkelder to win by 0.70 lengths.
Bold Respect had the lead but failed to kick on and was beaten into third, just holding off a fast-finishing Kasimir.
Kasimir and Bold Respect went off joint favourites at 2-1 although the former was TAB favourite.
La Bella Mia was one of three fillies in the race and Van Rensburg got her perfectly placed from her useful No 3 draw while Bold Respect raced around the field to lead the pack. Green Plains was always well placed while Kasimir, who had to contend with an outside draw, was caught wide all the way.
Bold Respect brought the field for home but was soon passed by La Bella Mia who carried just 51.5kg. She did have the race wrapped up quite a long way from home but 22-1 shot Wynkelder, who was near the rear for much of the journey, ran on well for second. Kasimir moved up on the outside of the field but had too much to do.
“In my advantage were the draw and the weight,” said Van Rensburg. “It was always going to be tough. But Mr Marwing had her very well tonight and all credit to him.”
The filly is owned by top jockey Weichong Marwing, who will be making a return to the saddle soon, after an injury enforced break.
