Larry Foley: Two-year-olds have a big say in three races on what looks a solid Friday standalone meeting at Kranji, including Race 3, the IRT Juvenile Stakes Open – the third leg of the Golden Horseshoe Series.
Big Hearted has had no luck at the barriers – again – but given this Hallowed Crown gelding won the first leg of the series from the same bad gate, you would expect him to start favourite to make it three wins from three career starts.
But this time he will face two other last-start winners in Boom Shakalaka and No Regrets, who both come off solid wins against older company.
The pair are trained by Shane Baertschiger, who also trains Free Fallin’ and looks one of the better debutantes on trial form with the Mike Clements-trained Resolution another who has shown enough at the training track to consider on debut.
There are also two Restricted Maiden races on the card where the the-year-olds get a good pull in the weights and the likes of Stormy View, Charming Diamond, War Frontier and Barbarian can have say in Race 2, while Hotshots Slam looks a more than handy type and he will give the likely favourite and three-year-old in Golden Kid a battle in Race 4.

Race 1 Selections; 3 TURF BEAUTY – 2 LOOKS GOOD – 1 ATLANTEAN – 5 TAVITO
A wide open Class 5 Poly sprint to open the standalone Friday meeting and there has to be value about if you can find the winner. TURF BEAUTY has been a query on the Poly but did place at her most recent run on the all-weather and given she comes off a soft run from a wide gate, a senior hoop from the ace could see a result. Two Class droppers to watch are LOOKS GOOD who is in solid form and should be ready to win in Class 5, while the seemingly out-of-form ATLANTEAN looks a good value option given he can improve lengths down in grade. TAVITO and MIKCAIPHO two others that can win on good recent form in similar affairs to this and plenty of others to consider including a surprise last start winner in WEST NORTH HILL.
Betting Strategy – TURF BEAUTY each-way.
1 ATLANTEAN *** Drops in Class and won maiden this trip so look for improvement with support likely. 8.00
2 LOOKS GOOD *** Never a threat but ran on well enough late in better company last start to think he goes close here. 5.00
3 TURF BEAUTY *** Freshened after soft run from wide gate last start (jockey queried) and can win with senior hoop from gate 1. 5.00
4 HOST THE NATION ** Veteran in solid form and a must for exotics although wide gate can test. 12
5 TAVITO *** Blinkers off after doing it tough last start and happy to think he wins soon on form prior. 8.00
6 MIKCAIPHO *** Obviously not one to win out of turn but due and gets his chance from gate 2. 8.00
7 LUCKY TIGER * Only battled last start and may need longer to show his best. 33
8 KUBERA’S CHIEF ** Issues last start (lame and respiratory) but was due and will figure somewhere with luck in running. 10
9 WEST NORTH HILL ** Turned around some poor form with an all-the-way win on turf last start and have to respect. 12
10 JK FLASH ** Maiden who pulled up lame last start and placed at run prior with this hoop. Exotics. 12
11 RICH FORTUNE ** Came in for good support last start when running on well but need space run to suit. 12
12 VENUS DE MILO * Missed the start badly and jockey got time last start in similar affair. Take on trust as should need longer. 20
13 PARKER ** Finds it hard to win but close up at recent outings and could show up from the good gate. 8.00
Race 2 Selections; 12 STORMY VIEW – 9 CHARMING DIAMOND – 11 WAR FRONTIER – 8 BARBARIAN
While a few of the raced 3YO’s in LINCOLN MOONLIGHT, YULONG EXPRESS and SOTHISTHEONE all win without surprising, 2YO’s get in very well at the weights this time of the year in Restricted Maiden events and happy to concentrate on the juveniles. What makes it tough is only one – CHARMING DIAMOND – has race experience, while BARBARIAN, WAR FRONTIER and the filly, STORMY VIEW, all look lively chances on debut on the back of good trial form. Of that trio, STORMY VIEW looked comfortable winning her recent trial and gets the favours from gate 3, while WAR FRONTIER wasn’t far behind her at that trial and has also drawn favourably in gate 6. CHARMING DIAMOND has again drawn wide but his debut effort when placing from a similar gate was good enough to win. Of the 3YO’s LINCOLN MOONLIGHT might be the pick first up after a spell but he will also need luck from a wide gate, while YULONG EXPRESS has the speed to test them all.
Betting Strategy – watch for support on the 2YO’s, STORMY VIEW each-way.
1 LINCOLN MOONLIGHT *** Resuming with solid trial under his belt. Has speed to cross from wide gate and hard to catch. 5.00
2 YULONG EXPRESS *** Battled late after leading with company last start. Back in trip a good move and right in this. 4.00
3 SOTHISTHEONE *** Drops back from the mile but best run was this trip and track and 3kg claim helps. Keep safe. 12
4 ANPANMAN ** 3YO New Zealand-bred gelding who comes off a solid trial with market best guide on debut. 20
5 RIVER TREASURE * Needs to improve. 100
6 COMECATCHME * Showed nothing on debut but appreciates much better gate and could improve with race fitness. 100
7 IN THE BLACK ** Has ability but trials like Tarzan, races like Jane so play with care. 33
8 BARBARIAN *** 2YO Redoutes Choice gelding who has trialled well enough to win on debut with luck from wide gate. 8.00
9 CHARMING DIAMOND *** 2YO who ran on well from wide gate on debut to place and expect much the same. 4.00
10 RAMPAGE * Australian-bred 2YO colt who has not shown up at one local trial so market only guide. 33
11 WAR FRONTIER *** NZ-bred 2YO who has trailed well enough to keep safe on debut. 12
12 STORMY VIEW *** Argentinean-bred 2YO filly who looked comfortable winning recent trial and should play a part in this finish. 6.00
Race 3 Selections; 1 BIG HEARTED – 3 NO REGRETS – 2 BOOM SHAKALAKA – 6 FREE FALLIN’
BIG HEARTED lived up to his name in the first leg of the Golden Horseshoe Series when doing it very tough from a wide alley (and survive a protest) to just win. That was after a good win on debut against the older horses and while drawn wide again for this, he knows how to win and the experienced Daniel Moor will give him every chance. There are two other last start winners in the race and NO REGRETS and BOOM SHAKALAKA can go on with the job. Both won with no weight in Restricted Maiden Company but both have speed, have drawn well and should figure. The pair are trained by Shane Baertschiger who also trains FREE FALLIN’ who looks one of the better debutantes on exposed trial form and may be value. The only other newcomer who has trialled well enough at Kranji to win is RESOLUTION who will need luck from gate 10 but should be more than competitive.
Betting Strategy – FREE FALLIN’ each-way.
1 BIG HEARTED *** Survived a protest when winning after tough run from wide gate last start. Needs luck again but may be better than these. 2.00
2 BOOM SHAKALAKA *** Comfortable when beating older Company on debut and will give a sight from gate 3. 4.00
3 NO REGRETS *** Had excuses on debut before winning at start two with no weight. Pay to respect from gate 1. 6.00
4 BETHLEHEM * Solid at best at the trials and would need support to consider. 50
5 CODIGOS * Recent trial OK but a long way off the winner and wide gate makes this tough. 50
6 FREE FALLIN’ *** Looked very comfortable at recent trial and stable is in form. Watch market. 10
7 HOUSEHOLD DYNASTY * The odd OK trial but wide gate suggests another day. 33
8 MAJESTY WARRIOR * Hard to have at debut on exposed trial form. 100
9 MISTER DYNAMO ** Solid to the wire at recent trial and one for exotics on debut. 20
10 RESOLUTION *** Australian-bred colt who had a good hit out at his recent trial and pay to keep safe although wide gate could test. 8.00
11 SPEED RACER * Market only guide on exposed trial form. 100
12 BEAUTY LUCK * Only battled on debut but will improve with experience. 100
13 MORE THAN OIL * Impossible on poor debut effort. 200
Race 4 Selections; 4 GOLDEN KID – 10 HOTSHOTS SLAM – 7 ACHIEVED MORE – 12 YAKETY YAK
Another Restricted Maiden where the 2YO’s get a handy pull at the weights with HOTSHOTS SLAM looking the pick of the juvenile bunch. By Swiss Ace, HOTSHOTS SLAM looked to be doing it easy when winning his most recent trial and while drawn a tad awkwardly in gate 9, the race lacks quality so a forward run is expected. The 3YO that is hardest to beat is GOLDEN KID. The NZ-bred gelding impressed when winning his Official Trial in a good time with some in hand and given connections have opted for a 3kg claimer in CS Chin, the 2YO weight advantage has been somewhat countered. These two look better than the rest on exposed trial form but the others 2YO’s to keep safe are ACHIEVED MORE on debut, while LIFE AFTER U and YAKETY YAK both improve on tough recent runs.
Betting Strategy – GOLDEN KID win, forecast with HOTSHOTS SLAM.
1 CALIFORNIA * Bad start costly last start but wide gate will make this tough. 20
2 CHAMPAGNE FINALE * Struggles. 100
3 DARK KNIGHT * More of a joker. 100
4 GOLDEN KID *** NZ-bred 3YO who won his Official trial in very good fashion and can win on debut. 2.00
5 BIG STAR * Has not shown up at trials and market only guide. 33
6 FAIRY’S WING * Found it tough last start after racing on the pace but drawn well and will improve with racing. 33
7 ACHIEVED MORE ** Smart Missile 2YO who looked comfortable at recent trial and could add value to exotics on debut. 12
8 GENERAL QIN * Australian-bred 2YO who has not shown up at trials. Market only guide. 50
9 GLENAFTON * Blinkers off after disappointing debut and wide gate suggests another day. 33
10 HOTSHOTS SLAM *** 2YO by Swiss Ace. Awkwardly drawn but should have speed and trials good enough to win an early race. 3.00
11 LIFE AFTER U ** Did it tough on debut so effort to run fourth (albeit well beaten) was commendable. Keep safe from better alley. 10
12 YAKETY YAK ** Excuses in straight and not a mile away last start and happy to think he plays a part in this finish. 10
Race 5 Selections; 4 WONDERFUL KNIGHT – 3 WASSERGEIST – 6 SHADOW SPEED – 7 TINGLE MARC
While we will have one eye on a smart enough newcomer form Australia in WASSERGEIST, WONDERFUL KNIGHT looks well placed to turn some good form into another win. The 8YO has looked due on the poly – last start in Class 3 – and given he always looked better on the turf, he could make every post a winner from gate 5 with Yusoff (and his 4kg) claim retaining the ride. As mentioned, WASSERGEIST looks the danger and it will be interesting to see how much support the former Australian gets. The 4YO won two solid races before arrival but his local trials suggests he has plenty to offer in Class 4 Company and can win. Of the others that are worth thought, FULIFE BRILLIANCE and SHADOW SPEED both could be forgiven for poor local debuts and are worth another look, while TINGLE MARC improves with a tongue-tie added after a sighter when resuming.
Betting Strategy – WONDERFUL KNIGHT win, saver on SHADOW SPEED.
1 SMART VINTAGE ** Resuming down in grade and will be running on late but should need longer. 20
2 FULIFE BRILLIANCE *** Former Argentinean who failed at Singapore debut with support but has trialled well since and worth another look. 8.00
3 WASSERGEIST *** Former Australian who won two from 12 in moderate Company before arriving but local trials suggests he is hard to beat on debut in suitable company. 3.00
4 WONDERFUL KNIGHT *** Will find this easier than last start and will give a very strong forward showing the better gate. 3.00
5 DUSSELDORF ** Just battled last start but usually a show in races like this and pay to keep safe from gate 2 with Rodd to ride. 12
6 SHADOW SPEED *** Bad start very costly on Singapore debut and work late suggests he has plenty more to offer. Keep safe. 20
7 TINGLE MARC *** Yet to win in Singapore but had some in hand when resuming and another to keep safe with a tongue-tie added from gate 1. 20
8 O’WHAT A FEELING * Resuming sans blinkers and will be running on but should need much longer. 33
9 QUANTUM ** Resuming after a bleeding attack but trials well and race suits so worth thought although gate tests. 16
10 THE WIND ** Resuming and has shown up fresh in similar affairs to this so worth thought in exotics. 20
11 SILVER WAY ** Form starting to read badly but gets blinkers back on and enjoys the turf so could improve. 20
12 HERO STAR ** Ran on well to place last start over 1400m and expect much the same. 12
13 ELITE BEAST ** Drawn wide and may need longer to win but competitive and a must for exotics. 20
14 PRINCE PEGASUS * Like to see in something easier but ran on well late to place last start could repeat. 20
Race 6 Selections; 6 SUCCESS STREET – 3 OVER DE TOP – 1 BRIMSTONE – 8 TOP BANANA
The usual Class 5 raffle thrown into the Jackpot and Quaddie mix and this one could get ugly. The two obvious picks are BRIMSTONE and OVER DE TOP who are both in form with good placings in similar affairs to this of late and they win without surprising. TOP BANANA (resuming on the back of a good trial) and FIGHTING WARRIOR also both placed at their respective last starts and this race is weak enough to be in the mix again. But one we have been watching is SUCCESS STREET who hasn’t gone a yard of late but did show glimpses early in his Singapore career. A recent trial with blinkers suggests he is the improver with headgear on and he could win at odds with a tongue-tie added for good measure. A well-worn blanket over the rest.
Betting Strategy – SUCCESS STREET small win at odds.
1 BRIMSTONE *** Maiden who finished was runner-up at two recent runs this trip and track and gets his chance. 3.00
2 FIGHTING WARRIOR ** Ran on well to place last start in similar affair and expect much the same. 8.00
3 OVER DE TOP *** Looks due and has to be a big show from gate 2. 4.00
4 EXCELLENT MOON ** Improved effort when leading and battling away to wire last start and could try and pinch one. 20
5 PHIDIAS * Battles as a rule. 33
6 SUCCESS STREET *** Form reads terribly but has been freshened with a good blinkers trip and could be the big improver with headgear and tongue-tie added. Watch market. 10
7 PLUCKY LAD ** Battles away manfully as a rule and a must for exotics in this weak field. 8.00
8 TOP BANANA *** Resuming after a solid placing back in January and recent trial good enough to give this weak race a shake. 6.00
9 BOHEMIAN ** Forty-two start maiden who pops up occasionally but exotics best. 16
10 SIMPANG ** Resuming, enjoys the Poly and another to include in exotics. 20
Race 7 Selections; 3 SUN MARSHAL – 2 TIME LORD – 1 TWICKENHAM – 8 CHOCOLATS
A strong Class 3 where a case can be made for many. The interesting runners are the four-year-olds SUN MARSHAL, TIME LORD and AUGUSTUS, who coincidently all met during the Queensland Winter carnival in 2018. Since arriving in Singapore all three have performed well with TIME LORD winning twice and the others once. SUN MARSHAL finished fourth to TIME LORD when resuming last start and should improve over the longer trip; with a 2kg weight swing in his favour, he may be hardest to beat. AUGUSTUS was narrowly beaten over 1400m last start and given he won twice over 1600m before arrival, he could show up despite the weight rise and wide gate. The chances don’t end there with IRONSIDE in solid form, TWICKENHAM down in grade, while SUPER DYNASY and CHOCOLATS can be included in exotics.
Betting Strategy – SUN MARSHAL win.
1 TWICKENHAM *** Showed improvement to place in Class 2 last start. Drops to Class 3 over favourite trip. With 3kg claim should be prominent for a long way 10
2 TIME LORD *** Improved third-up to win over 1400m in this class last start. Rises 2kg with Zawari replacing Duric. Won over this trip before arrival and should be closing late. 5.00
3 SUN MARSHAL *** Caught wide and only battled last start but should be improved over more suitable distance. Meets Time Lord 2kg better and over 1500m from good gate will be hard to get past. 3.50
4 AUGUSTUS *** Narrowly beaten in this grade last start. Won twice over this trip before arrival. Gets senior rider and despite wide gate could show up. 5.00
5 WOLF WARRIOR * Has struggled at recent turf outings. Prefer on poly. 50
6 SUPER DYNASTY ** Prominent from wide gate before fading last start over 1400m. Has won twice at this trip in Class 4 and from good gate can give a sight. 16
7 STAR EMPEROR ** Runs on and has an excellent record over 1200m but has struggled over longer. Take on trust. 33
8 CHOCOLATS *** Has resumed well with a poly win over 1000m followed by good second in Class 2 last start. From the good gate should be prominent throughout. 12
9 IRONSIDE *** Racing well over 1400m at recent starts and won Maiden over 1600m before arrival. Well drawn and should get a good run throughout. 6.00
10 CENTENARY DIAMOND * Won Class 4 over this trip last start. Consistent type up in grade but has found a strong Class 3. 16
11 MR BACHARACH ** Made a solid Singapore debut when well supported and run down late in Class 4 over 1400m and gets blinkers. Won Bendigo Maiden over 1600m but up in grade here. Has talent but this is strong race. 16
12 PERFORMANTE * Won 1400m Maiden in NZ before arrival but only battled on poly at Singapore debut in Class 4. Might need easier. 33
13 MR EXCHEQUER ** Only battled last start but more than competitive on best form. 33
14 STAR JACK * Was in form before he pulled up with respiratory issues two back and weakened badly last start. Looks a risk. 50
Race 8 Selections; 3 SILENT FORCE – 11 SALAMENCE – 8 YULONG FAST STEED – 1 LIM’S SHOT
A Class 4 of little depth may give the Lee Freedman trained SILENT FORCE a chance to go back-to-back. Joseph Azzopardi stays on and despite a hefty 4kg weight rise he may be too good given the strength of that win. The challenge may come from the 3YO SALAMENCE who has been freshened after a torrid run last outing over 1400m but prior to that bolted in when winning a Maiden over this trip on the poly; he may have upside and from gate three should get a good run with Benny Woodworth to ride. The quality of the field drops away rapidly after these with only SACRED GURU and MACH having recent credentials in the grade but both are poorly drawn. For the exotics include YULONG FAST STEED, which could benefit from a positive ride at value and the class dropper, LIM’S SHOT.
Betting Strategy – SILENT FORCE to win, saver on YULONG FAST STEED.
1 LIM’S SHOT ** Battling since resuming placed on turf four starts back in better company than this and should improve. 20
2 REACH FOR THE SUN * Won on poly four starts back in Class 4 but has struggled since. Hasn’t run on turf for nearly two years. Tested. 25
3 SILENT FORCE *** Won comfortably this class and distance last start. Rise 4kg but showing promise and should be hard to beat again. 2.50
4 BRINGER OF WAR * Rider lost irons last start but efforts since resuming poor. Needs to improve. 33
5 DREAMER LEGEND * Drops back in trip after solid efforts over 1600m. Winkers off and Zyrul back on. Poorly drawn and might find these too sharp. 20
6 SACRED GURU ** Only battled at past two outings over this trip. Previous form sound in this grade but poorly drawn. 10
7 MACH ** Checked at start but ran on to place last start in similar field. Goes best when ridden forward but gate no help. 10
8 YULONG FAST STEED *** Caught wide last start but loomed up before weakening late. Could benefit from a positive ride form better gate. Value. 16
9 MOONRAKER ** Wasn’t far away at first outing for a long time. Should be improved and only win was this trip. 20
10 SASA LADY * Maiden. Placed three times from 10 starts in Ireland. Trialled solidly. Watch market. 20
11 SALAMENCE *** Has been freshened after torrid outing last start over 1400m. Bolted in at previous start to win Maiden over this trip on poly. Well drawn and should be handy throughout. 3.00
12 O’REILLY STAR * Ran on well despite saddle slipping last start. Only win was over 1800m but could be running on. 33
13 ACCELERANDO * Freshened but has shown nothing at two starts since resuming from long break. 50
14 XIONG FONG * Needs to improve on recent efforts. 50
