Shenanigans wins going away

Ken Nicol: In a race which changed dramatically over the latter stages, Shenanigans (10-1) won the first Graded event of Vodacom July day with a narrow victory in the Betting World 2200.

Favourite Zillzaal (57-20) as expected set the pace from an inside gate, followed by The Dazzler and Run Red.

Bunker Hunt raced very wide from the worst draw, while Charles, Gimme One Night and Shenanigans all languished in the rear, although the field was relatively compact.

Zillzaal still well inside the last 200m, but was shifted in both directions as he came under pressure.

The Dazzler was on his shoulder, but challenges were now coming from all sides.

Gimme One Night (13-1) and Shenanigans took off from more or less the same position, but under a skilful Lyle Hewitson ride the latter found a little extra to win by an extending neck.

The Dazzler (15-1) stayed on for third to ensure there was already plenty of life in the PA after the opening leg.

Zillzaal filled the minor position.
