Punters get their Eden

Ken Nicol: “People’s banker” Eden Roc kept his unbeaten record when fighting off stable companion Putontheredlight to take the Grade 2 Durban Golden Horseshoe.

The 17-20 shot was the first favourite to even make the first three on Vodacom July day, following a few upsets in the preceding events.

And remarkably so far it has been a clean sweep of the feature events for Highveld based trainers.

Poinciana set the pace, followed by Aqua Delta, Cartel Captain, Invidia and loosen Your Tie.

Eden Roc was a few lengths off them, but always within striking distance.

He ran on strongly, and it was obvious 200m out that he had the frontrunners beaten.

Putontheredlight had raced a few lengths further back, but made swift headway down the inside rail. He came to make a race of it, but Eden Roc pulled out more when needed and scored by a long neck.

And almost certainly secured the Equus juvenile colt award in the process.

“He’s got all the ability and has brought it to the course. I’m blessed to ride horses like this” said Lyle Hewitson.

And Sean Tarry agreed.

“He’s a proper horse, and has done everything right” was his verdict.
