Muzi Yeni: Risk Taker the banker at Turffontein
Today we race at Turffontein on the Inside track and we open with a work riders’ race. My first selection is Pop Icon in an open race. Silver Sea looks the main danger so take the Swinger.
Race 2 is a Maiden Plate for fillies and mares over 1000m where I like Before The Dawn. She is back to 1000m and has a good draw. Initiator had an excellent debut run over the course and distance and looks the main threat.
Of the others with exposed form, the next choice is Celestial Fire. Keep an eye on the betting in case of any support for the unraced horses.
Race 3 is a Juvenile Plate for fillies and it contains my best bet on the day who is Risk Taker. I thought she won a good race and the filly who finished third behind her, Stellar Motion, won at the Vaal on Thursday.
Banker in her in all bets.
Race 4 is a Juvenile Plate over 1600m and I’m going with another Mike de Kock-trained runner in Perfectly Putt. He had a wide draw last time in his first run. He was also very green but ran on well and will come on with that experience. I ride Steak And Ale who beat Perfectly Putt last time but he is 3kg better off. I expect my mount to put up a fight but I have to respect the opposition – and the 3kg pull in the weights.
I will put both of them into the PA but for the Pick 6 add in Johnny Hero. I like the Got The Greenlight form line. Also include Arapaho. He is by Elusive Fort and should enjoy the extra distance.
Race 5 is such a small field and I think pace will be a factor. My ride, Gift For The Gap, will need a solid pace, which he might not get. I thought American Indian won a good race last time and I can’t ignore Gift For The Gap as I think this is his preferred distance. Those are my two for the PA. for the Pick 6 add in Jet Start, Cold Cash and Senor Lizard, who has a light weight and is unbeaten over the course and distance.
In Race 6 my first choice is Hot August who I thought ran a cracker last time. On that run he has a lot of these runners held. I also like my ride, Boatswain. His rating has come down and he will appreciate the drop in class. The same applies to Varimax. I also give Chainsaw a chance.
For the PA go with Hot August and Boatswain and add the other two into the Pick 6.
My first selection in Race 7 is Lone Survivor although this is a very competitive race. He is in great form and last time he raced wide for most of the journey and finished strongly.
The dangers are my ride, Lake Kinneret, who I feel will go very close, Gimme Hope Johanna and Rocky Night.
For the PA go with Lone Survivor and Lake Kinneret and for Pick 6 add Gimme Hope Johanna and Rocky Night, as well as Full Of Attitude and Gimmethenight.
Race 8 is a Maiden Plate and my selection is African Adventure who is my value bet. Most of the runners have exposed form and have had lots of chances but he could improve quite a lot on his first run. My second choice is Dogliotti who improved last time after a rest and has Gavin Lerena up. I ride Waltzing Al but he proved to be quite a difficult ride for Gavin last time. He did mention to me that he was thought highly of as a two-year-old and they wanted to give him some time to mature, so he must have been showing them something at home.
For the PA go with African Adventure and Dogliotti and for the Pick 6 we are adding in My Kingdom, Waltzing Al and Quest For Good.
In Race 9 my first selection is Princess Penelope, the only worry is No 11 draw over this distance. After that I will go with the two unraced horses, Forever Flame and Bella Rosa. Dennis Schwarz could have chosen to ride the experienced runners from the Alexander stable but went with the first-timer. The same applies to Diego de Gouveia who chose Bella Rosa.
Put Princess Penelope and Forever Flame into the PA and for the Pick 6 add in Bella Rosa and Rosalina.
