Brendan Gaillard: Trainer Cliffie Miller is having a very good year and his recent recruit Elegant General looks very likely to go through the divisions based on what we saw of his local debut.
Race 2, a MR 66 Handicap over 1000m at Flamingo Park on Monday certainly a stepping stone for this Brave Tin Soldier gelding and the eight-point penalty he got for his seven-length win should not anchor him.
There are some hard-knockers like African Magic, Dolphin and Fidelio who have proven themselves over the course and distance but Elegant General under Marco van Rensburg should see them off.
Probably the trainer worth following at this meeting is Tobie Spies who has five horses carded to run in Race 7, The Kimberley Nursery (Non-Black-Type) over 1400m.
There was not much between Axios and Baby Lets Mambo when they met last month so they can fight it out once again and Axios with Muzi Yeni aboard can win again.
Two other Spies-trained runners who could pop up and score at this meeting are Steffi’s Graft in Race 3 and All Of Me in Race 5.
Steffi’s Graft was not at her best last time out but is quite capable of winning off her current merit rating and Muzi Yeni is a good booking for her.
Yeni is also aboard All Of Me and although she finds herself in a competitive race she could make all the running.
Spies has a good record of sending first-timers to make successful debuts so the betting on Fast Draw in Race 1 needs to be noted.
