VAUGHAN MARSHALL

Ken Nicol: Renewed rain fell over Cape Town on Sunday, meaning the going at Kenilworth come Tuesday is sure to be heavy again.

But the weather is predicted to brighten, and in an open looking card Mirage looks likely to do the same for the mood of punters by winning Race 5, a Progress Plate restricted to three-year-old fillies.

Vaughan Marshall’s prowess with juveniles is almost legendary and this daughter of Captain Al was well supported when comprehensively beating a good field on debut in April.

She went straight into the Grade 3 Kenilworth Fillies Nursery after that and was sent off 22-10 favourite.

And after putting up a good fight she was far from disgraced a length off undefeated Cousin Liz, who looks rather special.

She is rated to win this comfortably, handles soft going and looks certain to improve on her current mark of 95. Hard to beat.

Of course there are plenty of others with huge scope and stable mate Binoche could be a threat after an easy debut win. Dark Crystal and Tiger Roll are others to consider for the upset.

Marshall also unveils a very interesting entry in the final race.

Black Knap makes his debut over 1400m, and is a half-brother to both 2017 Cape Guineas winner Tap ‘O Noth and top stayer Strathdon. Any serious betting support should be respected.

On exposed form though, Adam Marcus’ Argentinian import Quintay should be home and hosed.

The gelding has stayed on strongly for second in both sprint outings, giving every indication he will love now going around the turn and over further.

From a nice draw he looks to carry too many guns for his raced rivals, with Themadirishsheriff perhaps having shock potential from pole position.

A good value bet is Happy Wanderer in the opening race. This Mike Robinson-trained colt kept on for third place despite losing a shoe to what looks a top class sort in Yorktown last time and runner up Celtic Voyager has since won easily.

He should be in the shake-up, but this is an open event and winning chances have to be given to Bag Of Tricks, Hurricane Harry and Nevil Mu, among others.
