Singapore Friday preview

A mixed surface eight-race card from Singapore on Friday and while there are some competitive turf races on offer, it is a Kranji C Poly event over 1700m (race 7) that is the most interesting.

What makes it fascinating is the fact that most of the horses are from sires or mares that raced in the United States, including the likely favourite in WOLF WARRIOR who ticks both those boxes.

The Midnight Lite 4YO has three wins and three close-up placing’s from just seven starts on the all-weather track and not surprisingly given his ‘dirt’ breeding, he is yet to place at five turf starts.

The danger could be the only other horse with direct US-bloodlines on both the sire and mare side in TARGET.
A 6YO by War Front, TARGET won three-in-a-row last year over this trip and track and given he has had two sighters this preparation over unsuitable sprint distances, he is the improver with Benny Woodworth up.

Elsewhere on the card, SUN SNIPER had support and ran on well enough over 1200m at his Singapore debut to think he will be hard to hold out over a more suitable 1400m trip in race 6 with Vlad Duric retaining the ride.

Best Bets: (SUN SNIPER race 4, win), (STREET PARTY race 6, value), and (TARGET race 7, value).

Bankers for Jackpots: Race 5 (1, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11), race 6 (1, 3, 4 and 6), race 7 (1, 2, 3 and 7), race 8 (1, 2 and 3).

Race 1
Selections; 3 ROYAL PAVILION – 1 KRANJI GOLD – 4 BORN TO WIN – 8 BASILISK

A solid Class 5 to open the meeting and it may pay to follow some of the leading hoops with Vlad Duric and Michael Rodd on ROYAL PAVILION and KRANJI GOLD respectively. ROYAL PAVILION is first up after breaking his maiden status in this grade at his last start and he can win again on the back of a good trial. KRANJI GOLD changed stables and dropped in grade last start and showed enough to think he wins a race like this sooner than later. Plenty of depth to this race and the likes of LOOKS GOOD and GOLDEN THUNDER both placed last start and should figure here, while BASILIK will improve lengths back on the turf over his favourite trip. Keep the maiden BORN TO WIN safe as he will appreciate Class 5 Company and has shown enough to consider with blinkers added.

Betting Strategy – BORN TO WIN each-way.

1 KRANJI GOLD *** Showed last start Class 5 suits and 1400m looks ideal. Goes close. 3.00
2 LOOKS GOOD *** Placed albeit a long way off the winner over 1200m last start. Should figure over 1400m. 8.00
3 ROYAL PAVILION *** Resuming after breaking through for convincing win in this grade last start. Can show up with Vlad Duric to ride on the back of a good trial. 3.50
4 BORN TO WIN *** Maiden who will find Class 5 to his liking and ran on well enough last start to win this with blinkers back on. 8.00
5 GOLDEN THUNDER *** Drawn wide but in form, gets blinkers and can figure. 6.00
6 LIM’S FORCE ** Form reads badly and better on the Poly but drop to Class 5 should see an improvement. 20
7 PRINCE PEGASUS ** Never involved from wide gate last start in this company but can improve with more positive ride with visor added. 20
8 BASILISK *** Has only battled at recent poly outings but this trip and track is his caper. Keep safe. 12
9 LARCENY * Blinkers off after a disappointing run of form and hard to consider. 33
10 SILVER JOY * Recent trial OK but battling away and prefer others. 33
11 I’M THE MAN * No. 100

Race 2
Selections; 4 GOLDEN KID – 2 EASY SOUTH EAST – 5 KADIMA – 3 COMING THROUGH

The market is going to be a terrific guide to this Restricted Maiden as two of the fancies are resuming after issues at their respective last starts, with a handy newcomer also in the mix. The newcomer in question is COMING THROUGH who looked to trial good enough locally to consider seriously on debut, while another debutante in VICTORY JOY also showed enough at the trials to include somewhere. The two horses resuming are EASY SOUTH EAST who did it tough last start and returned with heat stress but can win on good form prior, while KADIMA flopped on debut but did return a roarer and he showed promise at the trials and may be value. The horse that may beat them all is GOLDEN KID who has recent good race form to his name and probably starts favourite with Simon Kok to ride.

Betting Strategy – EASY SOUTH EAST win, saver on KADIMA.

1 RED ROAR * Did it tough last start but still needs to show more before considering. 33
2 EASY SOUTH EAST *** Resuming after excuses last start (tough run plus heat stress) and can win on form prior on the back of solid trial. 3.00
3 COMING THROUGH *** NZ-bred 4YO who showed more than enough at Official Trial to win on debut. 3.00
4 GOLDEN KID *** Did it tough last start from wide gate when beaten a long way into third. Gets his chance from barrier 3. 3.00
5 KADIMA *** Resuming after returning a roarer when disappointing on debut. Keep safe on good trial form. Value. 12
6 STAR FIFTYTWO ** Ran on solidly to place last start over 1200m. May need longer with blinkers off. 12
7 VICTORY JOY ** NZ-bred 4YO who looked comfortable at recent trial and pay to watch for support on debut. 12
8 HOSTWIN QUEEN * Hard to have. 100
9 COMECATCHME * No. 200

Race 3
Selections; 3 LIM’S SHOT – 4 JUSTICE LIGHT – 1 SOLDADO – 2 COUNTRY BOSS

A Class 4 of little depth but given the erratic form of most of the fancies, a tough one for punters. SOLDADO did win last start (after a run of unplaced efforts) and with a handy Simon Kok 3kg claim, he carries the same weight and looks the benchmark from gate 1. LIM’S SHOT had no excuses last start but has ability, comes into this with a nice trial under his belt and can win back on the Poly. Likewise, LIM’S PASSION comes off a shocker (as the odds on pop) and is back in trip but has ability and could atone. COUNTRY BOSS won by six lengths two back and was beaten by 17 lengths last start so play with care, while JUSTICE LIGHT has two good recent runs to his name so should figure in a race that suits. PIONEER SEVEN, NORTHERN SUN for exotics and keep DASH very safe at odds on the back of a good trial.

Betting Strategy – LIM’S SHOT each-way.

1 SOLDADO *** Support and ran on well to win similar affair last start and pay to follow from gate 1 with a handy 3kg claim. 3.00
2 COUNTRY BOSS *** Won by six lengths two back before losing by 17 lengths last start. Subsequently trialled well so keep safe. 6.00
3 LIM’S SHOT *** Another who was disappointing last start but recent trial very good and race suits. Can win. 5.00
4 JUSTICE LIGHT *** Winner too good last start but battled well enough to be in the place mix and should figure prominently from gate 2. 8.00
5 LIM’S PASSION ** Coming off a shocker as the odds on elect an back in trip but has ability so keep safe with best work expected late. 5.00
6 PIONEER SEVEN ** Veteran who has drawn wide and pulled up lame last start but can figure with luck on best recent form. 20
7 BIG ELEPHANT * Took a drop to Class 5 to win and happy to wait. 33
8 REIGN * Resuming sans blinkers with tongue-tie added but hard to have. 50
9 FOREVER GOOD * Surprised most when winning in maiden company two back but put in a solid effort this grade last start. Should need easier. 50
10 NORTHERN SUN ** Doesn’t win out of turn but usually in the mix and a must for exotics. 12
11 DASH ** Resuming for new stable and while form reads terribly, some recent trials good and could surprise at long odds. 20
12 RED RIDING WOOD * Back in trip and battling only. Needs easier. 50
13 ELITE BEAST ** Looked to have some in hand last start so could consider in exotics but like to see in easier company. 20

Race 4
Selections; 4 SUN SNIPER – 1 LORD OF CLOUD – 6 OVERCOMING – 5 BLACK QUAIL

There looks plenty of early pace in this Class 4 event over 1400m, which should give everyone a chance including SUN SNIPER at his second start in Singapore. The well-bred 4YO won over the mile before arriving and his first up effort over 1200m good enough to suggest he can win this with Duric retaining the ride. LORD OF CLOUD is over due to win and gets his chance. The 5YO hasn’t won since October 2018 – which has been disappointing given he looked to be headed to Open Company – but this race suits, as does gate 2 with Simon Kok to ride. BLACK QUAIL and GALILEO’S APPROACH are the two in-form pace influences and if either gets a soft run out front they can win, while OVERCOMING was disappointing last start but looked due prior and he can also race forward so keep safe.

Betting Strategy – SUN SNIPER win.

1 LORD OF CLOUD *** Refusing to run a bad race but refusing to win. Gets his chance with claim from good gate. 3.00
2 ABSOLUTE MIRACLE ** A long way off the winner when placing last start but that as better and race suits so keep safe. 12
3 GALILEO’S APPROACH *** Excuses over the mile last start, can lead and will look the winner at stages. 8.00
4 SUN SNIPER *** Had good support when running on well over 1200m at Singapore debut and extra 200m on that back of that effort is ideal. Can win. 3.00
5 BLACK QUAIL *** On pace runner who will figure prominently throughout from gate 3. 8.00
6 OVERCOMING *** Disappointing last start but previous efforts suggests he is ready to win with visor off. 8.00
7 GOLDEN DASH ** Only battled in the Golden Horseshoe but will appreciate handicap conditions with winkers off. 10
8 RUNMINDERBINDERRUN * Won well in Class 5 last start but this field looks a tougher ask. 33
9 PENNSYLVANIA * In the mix without being a threat last start but should need easier. 33
10 SILVER WAY * Reassess in Class 5. 100

Race 5
Selections; 1 LIM’S HONOUR – 9 GANGNAM CLASSIC – 8 VENUS DE MILO – 5 WILDFIRE

A terrible race to start the Jackpot or Quaddie but hopefully a maiden in LIM’S HONOUR can salute. The 4YO has shown enough in solid Maiden Company to think he wins a race like this and while disappointing last start, he did pull up at lame and gets his chance if right. Nothing else wins without surprising but GANGNAM CLASSIC was ridden positively last start when placing and we can expect another forward showing, while both VENUS DE MILO and WILDFIRE have recent placings to their names and should figure if having good day. Blanket over the rest and go as wide as the budget permits in exotics.

Betting Strategy – LIM’S HONOUR win.

1 LIM’S HONOUR *** Maiden who pulled up lame last start when supported in this grade over 2000m. Can win this on best form. 8.00
2 ANALYST * Battles away and gate no help. 33
3 WEST NORTH HILL ** Disappointing last start but form prior good enough for this. 8.00
4 LUCKY TIGER * Battles as a rule but could improve in this weak field. 33
5 WILDFIRE *** Maiden who disappointed last start but can lead from gate 2 and worth thought. 7.00
6 KING WARRIOR ** First beaten last start but gets winkers and gets his chance in this poor field. 12
7 MIRACLE TIME ** Form reads badly but works home when in the mood and Duric won’t hurt. 8.00
8 VENUS DE MILO *** Won’t win out of turn but placed two back this trip an track and goes close in this field. 4.00
9 GANGNAM CLASSIC *** Placed with a positive ride last start and expect much the same. 4.00
10 TIGER BOSS ** Looked to have some in hand last start and can figure with a more positive ride. 12
11 EXCELLENT MOON ** Form only fair but gets gate 1 and best when ridden forward. Keep safe with no weight. 20

Race 6
Selections; 4 STREET PARTY – 1 BUDDY BUDDY – 3 GREEN STAR – 6 RAPIDASH

Another tricky race for punters with a newcomer from Ireland in BUDDY BUDDY worthy of consideration, while STREET PARTY will find this easier than the Group 1 Guineas. In fact STREET PARTY did look due in this company prior to his Guineas run and given he was never really involved on that occasion from a wide gate, he gets his chance back in trip from gate 3 with ‘buckets’ Moor to ride. BUDDY BUDDY raced as Red Label in the UK and while his two wins were over a tad longer, 1400m looks ideal at his Singapore debut and his local trials good enough to give this a shake. It’s not a race in two by any means with GREEN STAR in very honest form and looks the benchmark, while RAPIDASH can step up from Maiden Company and play a part in this finish.

Betting Strategy – STREET PARTY each-way.

1 BUDDY BUDDY *** Two-time winner from Ireland who has trialled well enough to think he has a say over 1400m at Singapore debut. 4.00
2 COMMAND ROYALE ** Never involved until best work late last start and happy to follow at odds from gate 1. 20
3 GREEN STAR *** In solid form and wins one of these sooner than later with Kok retaining the ride. 4.00
4 STREET PARTY *** Freshened after never being involved in the Guineas from wide gate. Might be better than most of these. 3.60
5 DREAMER LEGEND ** Form better than it reads and should be running on if he races more kindly in running. 20
6 RAPIDASH *** Won Maiden last start. Is a 6YO but has had long injury breaks and only five starts. Keep safe. 6.00
7 SILVER SKY ** Nothing from wide gate last start and should be more competitive from barrier 4. 20
8 WHOSE ELSE’S * Needs to show more this campaign. 50
9 MINGS MAN ** Love to see in Class 5 but not far away last start in similar affair and pay to keep safe. 8.00
10 ISTANA * Competitive on his day but needs easier to win. 20
11 YULONG DREAM * Reassess in easier company. 100

Race 7
Selections; 2 WOLF WARRIOR – 1 TARGET – 7 MAJESTIC EMPRESS – 3 MIGHTY EMPEROR

Some Poly specialists are the horses to follow in this Kranji Stakes C and none go better on the all-weather (as opposed to the turf) than WOLF WARRIOR. The US-bred 4YO has had three wins and three close-up placings from his seven Poly starts but remarkably has yet to run a drum on the turf from five starts; Michael Rodd stays on-board and he could be hard to hold out. The interesting runner is TARGET – also a US-bred – who runs over a suitable trip after two sighters over shorter distances and he can go forward and give a sight with senior hoop Benny Woodworth a factor. Ricky Le Grange always seems to have a say in races like this and he saddles MIGHTY EMPEROR and MAJESTIC EMPRESS who both look suited this trip and track and both win without surprising. Include SUPERNOVA, CHOCOLATS, FORESTO and YULONG HONOR in exotics.

Betting Strategy – WOLF WARRIOR win, saver on TARGET.

1 TARGET *** Form reads badly steps up to suitable trip and could give a sight with senior jockey a factor. 6.00
2 WOLF WARRIOR *** Showed last start why he is a Poly only horse and wins sooner than later. 3.00
3 MIGHTY EMPEROR *** Drawn wide but in form and very much appreciates being back on the Poly and can win. 4.00
4 SUPERNOVA ** 11YO who is in very honest form and should figure at the business end with luck from wide gate. 10
5 CHOCOLATS ** Honest, handles the Poly and always an each-way show. 12
6 FORESTO ** Up in grade but found good form on the Poly and should be competitive with a handy 3kg claim. 8.00
7 MAJESTIC EMPRESS *** Turf form of late better than it reads and recent win was on the Poly so keep very safe at value. 9.00
8 CARNELIAN * Gate 1 helps but struggling. 33
9 YULONG HONOR ** Up in grade but excuses last start (lame) and could run a cheeky race at odds. 20
10 DIXIELAND ROCK * Recent win in Class 5 and that looks his caper. 50
11 MIKCAIPHO * Last start win in Class 5 and this looks too tough. 50

Race 8
Selections; 2 LIM’S KNIGHT – 1 RED DAWN – 3 SIERRA CONQUEROR – 9 YULONG FAST STEED

Another tough race for punters to close the meeting but while we will have a look at a few of the Class droppers on the night, LIM’S KNIGHT is due and should be able to overcome the wide gate and win. The 7YO kept a handy winner honest last start with Benny Woodworth up and with the in-form hoop retaining the ride, he must go close. Two others horses that are in form in Class 4 are YULONG FAST SPEED and SUPER WIN and both are honest enough to figure in this finish with just 53kg apiece. The two Class droppers in question are RED DAWN and SIERRA CONQUEROR who both can improve dramatically on poor recent form in a race that suits with market a good guide.

Betting Strategy – LIM’S KNIGHT win, saver on RED DAWN.

1 RED DAWN *** Recent for reads badly but drops to winnable grade and looks well placed with a 3kg claim from a nice gate. 6.00
2 LIM’S KNIGHT *** Wide gate always come concern but in form and will work into winning calculations late. 3.00
3 SIERRA CONQUEROR *** Changed stables after a run of poor form but drops significantly in grade and can improve and win. 9.00
4 CLASSIFIED ** Nothing last start in this company and may need longer to win but could be running on late at odds. 20
5 WHISTLING WIN * Coming off a shocker and have to take on trust. 33
6 RIVER GOLDEN * Swooper who needs to be having a good day. 20
7 METAGROSS * Won maiden this trip and track but drawn wide and has struggled in this company. 33
8 SUPER WIN *** May need it easier to win but in very honest form and should figure in the finish. 6.00
9 YULONG FAST STEED *** Had excuses from wide gate last start and gets his chance from barrier 4 to turn some good form into a win. 5.00
10 FLYING YELLOW * Back in trip and struggling. 100
11 HIDDEN PROMISE ** Nothing over the mile last start but was due prior over sprint trips. Gate could test. 8.00
12 LIM’S RHYTHM * Needs turf, easier and longer. 50
13 MON ENERGY * Form terrible. 100
14 ELITE SAINT * Gate 1 helps and placed two back but like to see in easier company. 33
