GAVIN VAN ZYL
Bonginkosi Nkosi: Velvet Season can stop being the bridesmaid in Race 3 at Greyville.
At this point most people have lost faith in Velvet Season – a runner-up in his last four starts – however all appears to be in his favour and he looks set to finally shed maiden tag when he runs in Race 3, a Maiden Plate over 2000m on the Greyville Polytrack on Sunday.
He does exceptionally well at this venue and has been beaten by only a short-head in his last two efforts on the Polytrack – the closest he has gone to winning.
He is the joint best-weighted runner in this contest, along with Just Dixit and Indigo Tractor.
The latter jumps from a decent No 5 draw and should pose the main danger under Donovan Dillon, making him a must include in your Pick 6 bets.
Indigo Tractor has been a much-improved horse since relocating to KZN and recently produced a career best when finishing second, beaten 1.60 lengths by Deposition over 2200m on the Turf track.
Prior to that he finished third in two consecutive outings, including when a close-up 0.20 lengths behind World Cruise at this racecourse.
For Quartet purposes, float Indigo Tractor and Velvet Season with Just Dixit, Soulja Boy, Leicester Square, Shine Up and Myrrh.
Take those winnings and back the Gavin van Zyl-trained Cherry Road when she contests Race 6, a FM 76 Handicap over 1200m.
She was backed to win on debut and win she did, skipping an extending 1.70 lengths clear of Rose Dancer over the minimum trip at Scottsville.
Now knowing her trade, this daughter of Vercingetorix should improve many lengths and with just 55.5kg to shoulder, she should not miss.
The only chink in her armour is the fact she jumps from a No 10 draw.
If the Betting World multiple tickles your fancy, take places on Gibraltar Green in Race 2, Indigo Tractor in Race 3 and wins on Irish Wonder Girl in Race 4 and Cherry Road in Race 6.
