Brian Wiid passes

Sombre news breaking on Friday is that veteran trainer Brian Wiid has passed away at the age of 71.

A trainer of over 40 years standing, Mr Wiid had been in the Union hospital since suffering a stroke a few weeks ago.

At first he appeared to be making good progress, but sadly this was not to be.

He trained the likes of top sprinter Knife Edge and Summer Cup winner Cardinal Fury in his earlier years

In more recent times Lady Margeret Hall, Bankable Teddy, Alcanina and Magic Master are among the top horses to have passed through his care.

The last named was undefeated in five local starts under Barend Vorster before being imported to Dubai in 2004.

He went on to win the Jebel Ali Sprint of 2005.
