Singapore, Friday September 13 – Meeting Preview, selections and comments by Larry Foley,
While there are some good races late in the card, three maiden events and a couple of Class 5’s could make it a tough night for punters.
In saying that, the lack of depth in all three maiden races suggests the winners will be easier to find than most weeks, with trial form the key.
Case in point is GIANT KILLING in Race 2 who is resuming after a very poor run of form but his recent trial good enough to suggest he improves for the break and could win at value.
Another big improver from the trials comes up in the very next race with KING’S LANDING the horse to watch.
The 3YO has looked hopeless at his two career starts but raised more than a few eyebrows when winning a recent trial by some five lengths in a very respectable time.
But the best bet on the day may be in the third maiden on the card with LIM’S MOMENT extremely hard to beat on his exposed trial form in Race 5.
The 5YO has taken a while to get to the track but his two recent trials suggests his debut will be worth the wait, especially when he faces a field that is ordinary to say the least.
Best Bets: (LIM’S MOMENT Race 5, win), (GIANT KILLING Race 2, value), and (KING’S LANDING Race 3, value).
Bankers for Jackpots: Race 5 (4), Race 6 (2, 3, 4, 5 and 7), Race 7 (2, 3, 8, 9 and 10), Race 8 (1, 2 and 3).
Selections; 4 GOLD COAST – 7 TSURIAN – 3 PAPERBACK TROOPER – 5 MOON CHARM
A tough opener for punters given there are some significant Class droppers. The market will be a very good guide. It may be a maiden having his first run in Class 5 that is the biggest improver and GOLD COAST could be hard to run down. The 3YO has plenty of speed, will make the running from gate 1 and with a handy 3kg claim in this company, he will look the winner late. The horse he may have to worry about at the business end is TSURIAN. The 6YO – formerly known as Justice Smart – was racing in KSB Company only one year ago and while he may be a better option on the turf over longer, he will win in Class 5 so watch for stable support. There are two last start winners in the race and while MOON CHARM won a weak one, PAPERBACK TROOPER won well enough to think he can carry an extra 3kg and figure again. Betting Strategy – GOLD COAST win.
1 FLYING YELLOW * Down in grade but has struggled since maiden win and may need longer.
2 MON ENERGY ** Another who has shown nothing since maiden win but race suits and as does Class 5 so should improve.
3 PAPERBACK TROOPER *** Up 3kg after good win in similar affair last start and must be respected.
4 GOLD COAST *** Speedy maiden who will appreciate first run in Class 5 and can win with gate 1 a bonus.
5 MOON CHARM ** Won a weak turf race on the back of a good trial last start and should be competitive again.
6 SECRET SQUIRREL ** Form looks hopeless but will appreciate drop to Class 5 so watch the market.
7 TSURIAN *** Late Justice Smart. Like to see over a tad longer but a significant drop in Class and hard to hold out late.
8 CLARTON SUPREME ** Maiden who will find Class 5 to his liking and should be competitive.
9 RIVER TREASURE ** Maiden who showed last start that this company is his caper and a must for exotics.
10 SUCCESS COME TRUE * Battling away and hard to recommend.
11 HIGH LIMIT ** Nothing last start over the mile but placed two back this trip and track so another to consider for exotics.
Selections; 1 LIM’S RAY – 3 COMING UP – 2 GIANT KILLING – 8 NOVA FACTOR
A terribly weak maiden and while a couple may improve and could be considered on trial form, it does look a race between LIM’S RAY and COMING UP. It’s hard to split the two but LIM’S RAY will find this much easier than a very competitive run in Class 4 Company and the in-form Benny Woodworth should get the job done here. COMING UP has only had the one race start but showed enough with good support to think he wins a race sooner than later and the services of Vlad Duric won’t hurt his chances today with a tongue-tie added for good measure. As mentioned, the others are hopeless on race form but GIANT KILLING could be well named on the back of a good trial and the market will be a good guide. NOVA FACTOR should be better than what he has shown at three race starts and could improve. Betting Strategy – LIM’S RAY, COMING UP forecast, saver on GIANT KILLING.
1 LIM’S RAY *** Maiden who was competitive in Class 4 last start and hard to beat in this weak field.
2 GIANT KILLING *** Resuming after a bad run of form but recent trial suggests he improves dramatically with market best guide.
3 COMING UP *** Had good support and showed enough at race debut to think he can win this with a tongue-tie added for good measure.
4 REMARKABLE EMPIRE * Resuming sans winkers after a long injury layoff. Trials OK but is a risk.
5 SAYONARA * Improved effort at start two but like to see more before considering with winkers off.
6 VICTORY JOY * Needs to show more before considering.
7 BE HUMBLE * Impossible on exposed form but gets blinkers first time so market watch advised.
8 NOVA FACTOR ** Showed nothing at three race starts but has always shown enough at the trials to think he has more to offer.
9 HELUSHKA * No.
Selections; 2 KING’S LANDING – 8 RESOLUTION – 12 TOM CAT – 13 FOUNTAIN OF FAME
An extremely difficult Restricted Maiden for form analysts with no real race form to go on with the exception of the second emergency in BEER GARDEN who would probably start favourite and be hard to run down if he gets a start. But as it stands, three horses that have no race form to go on but improve on the back of good trials are the horses to watch. The pick of the trio is KING’S LANDING who has been hopeless at two race starts but his recent trial was very exciting and he looks the big improver. RESOLUTION was gelded after racing greenly on debut and he trials well enough to consider from gate 1, while the first emergency – FOUNTAIN OF FAME – had excuses on debut and can be considered on his subsequent good trial. Plenty of debutantes to watch including the Lee Freedman-trained TOM CAT who should come in for support on exposed trial form. Betting Strategy – KING’S LANDING win, saver on RESOLUTION.
1 EUNOS AVE THREE ** Showed little on debut but had trailed well prior, appreciates the run, better gate and gets winkers.
2 KING’S LANDING *** Shown nothing at two race starts but recent trial was impressive and could be the bolter from gate 3.
3 KRUGER ** Australian-bred 3YO who debuts on the back of a solid trial and market best guide.
4 MARQUIS BEE * Resuming after two poor runs and hard to consider.
5 MERCURIAL TURN ** Australian-bred 3YO who has a wide gate to contend with but recent trial with blinkers was solid enough to consider in this field.
6 QIJI STAR ** Australian-bred 3YO who is drawn badly but trials good enough to keep safe.
7 RAMPAGE * Freshened after poor debut and hard to have.
8 RESOLUTION *** Gelded after racing greenly on debut and trials suggests he has more to offer with gate 1 a bonus.
9 RUMBLE * Gets Rodd but battled on debut and not for me.
10 SHA NA NA * No.
11 SPEED RACER * Battled from a wide gate last start and drawn badly again.
12 TOM CAT *** Australian-bred 3YO whose recent trial good enough to consider on debut in this weak field.
13 FOUNTAIN OF FAME *** Excuses on debut so happy to forgive the run and seriously consider on subsequent good trial. Value.
14 BEER GARDEN *** Speedster who is due and would be hard to run down if he gets a start.
Selections; 8 MATSURIBAYASHI – 7 DAZZLE GOLD – 9 SUN ACE – 2 REDDOT RISING
Most of the runners look to have some chance in this Class 4 Poly event over 1800m including no less than three last start winners in DAZZLE GOLD, MATSURIBAYASHI and PAKATAN WARRIOR. Of the trio, both DAZZLE GOLD and PAKATAN WARRIOR are chasing hat-tricks on the Poly and while the latter will find this a tougher ask than Class 5 company, DAZZLE GOLD showed the jump in grade was no problem last start and can go on with the job with Michael Rodd getting the favours from gate 1. MATSURIBAYSHI won on the turf last start but given his good Poly record from last year, this race looks suitable and he could be hard to hold out. As mentioned, you can make a case for most others but SUN ACE looks due and should figure prominently at the business end, while REDDOT RISING will enjoy the step up to 1800m and goes close with luck from the widest gate. Betting Strategy – MATSURIBAYSHI each-way.
1 MIGHTY EMPEROR ** Didn’t look interested last Sunday but drops in Class and recent in was in this company so keep safe.
2 REDDOT RISING *** Drawn wide but showed enough last start over 1000m to seriously considering stepping to a more suitable trip.
3 WONDERFUL PAINT * Race suits but just battling of late and like to see more before considering.
4 SACRED SEA *** Can mix his form and drawn awkwardly but won over 1700m two back and goes close with any luck in running.
5 GOLAZO ** Rarely seen on the Poly but runs on strongly when in the mood.
6 WELL BRED * No.
7 DAZZLE GOLD *** Found winning form on the Poly and pay to keep following with gate 1 and Rodd a bonus.
8 MATSURIBAYASHI *** Coming off a turf win over 2000m but has a good Poly record and can win again.
9 SUN ACE *** Just missed in busy go last start over the mile and in this a long way.
10 ANGEL HALO * Battled only since Class 5 win and better suited there.
11 BEBOP ** Excuses (traffic) when finishing down the field last Sunday. Can include in exotics on honest form prior.
12 PAKATAN WARRIOR ** Backed up maiden win with a narrow Class 5 victory and this looks a tougher ask.
Selections; 4 LIM’S MOMENT – 1 ROMANTIC – 2 ORIENT EXPRESS – 3 CALL ME INVINCIBLE
While we are happy to make a case for a raced maiden from New Zealand in ROMANTIC with one eye on the market on the day, LIM’S MOMENT looks extremely hard to beat on exposed trial form and should win. The 5YO has taken his time getting to the races but two recent very good trials suggests he is worth the wait with heavy support expected. As mentioned, we can make a case for ROMANTIC given the 4YO placed at his only start in NZ before arriving but he will need some support on the back of one quiet local trial. Most of the others will struggle to run a place in their careers but ORIENT EXPRESS has speed and if right (he has had breathing issues) could be hard to pass, while the market is the best guide on the debutante CALL ME INVINCIBLE. Betting Strategy – LIM’S MOMENT strong win.
1 ROMANTIC *** Raced Kiwi maiden who placed at only career start. Market best guide on quiet local trial.
2 ORIENT EXPRESS ** Has his issues (repeat roarer) so is a risk but will lead and look the winner at some stage.
3 CALL ME INVINCIBLE ** NZ-bred 4YO who hasn’t shown up at the trials so market only guide.
4 LIM’S MOMENT *** Australian-bred 5YO who has looked a nice type at the trials and hard to beat on debut.
5 RETALLICA * Shown speed but little else at two career starts but recent trials OK so could improve in this weak field.
6 BIG STAR * Maiden who appreciate being back in suitable company but hard to consider.
7 HOSTWIN QUEEN * Placed five starts back but that may have been an anomaly.
8 INVISIBLE * Failed to show improvement on the Poly last star and easier to ignore.
9 METEOR LOUI * Gets tongue-tie but impossible on form.
10 ASSASSIN * Tongue-tie off but no.
Selections; 4 YULONG SHENGDAO – 5 GANGNAM CLASSIC – 3 KUBERA’S CHIEF – 7 MAKE U FAMOUS
Most of these horses disappoint more often than not so a race to punt with some care. As it stands a horse like YULONG SHENGDAO may appreciate the weak field and while he is better suited over longer, a drop in trip may be just what he needs and he should have enough pace to figure prominently throughout. You can also make a case for GANGNAM CLASSIC who was supported when pulling up lame last start but goes close if right and the same could be said for MAKE YOU FAMOUS who obviously has his issues (repeat roarer) but can win with Rodd from gate 1. KUBERA’S CHIEF is probably the most honest horse in the field so could be the safest betting proposition but again, a race to be cautious of. Betting Strategy – small win YULONG SHENGDAO.
1 WITHOUT PREJUDICE * Appreciates first up run but like to see something this campaign before arriving.
2 THOTH WARRIOR ** Just fair at his last couple but was due prior and this field is weak.
3 KUBERA’S CHIEF *** In honest form and can knock in a win in this field.
4 YULONG SHENGDAO *** Back in trip but has enough speed to be prominent throughout and should be in the mix.
5 GANGNAM CLASSIC *** Excuses last start (lame) when supported and gets his chance again back on the Poly.
6 LADY BOSS * Battles only.
7 MAKE U FAMOUS *** Long-term maiden status a concern and has retuned a roarer at two of his last three starts but can win if right.
8 HEE’S FORTE * Backing up after another poor showing and not for me.
9 YELLOW JADE HORSE * Thirty-start maiden who puts in the odd good run but easier to ignore.
Selections; 8 SACRED SHAM – 2 WEBSTER – 10 FULIFE KING – 9 SPECIAL KING
Some good speedsters make up this Class 2 over 1000m on the poly and Mark Walker may hold the key with SACRED SHAM and FULIFE KING. SACRED SHAM ran on last start over what looks his best trip and from gate 7, Daniel Moor can sit off the speed and be strongest late. The stablemate FULIFE KING has disappointed at his past three starts from wide gates but 1000m is his preferred journey and from gate one with only 50kg he will be the one they have to run down. The one likely to go with him is SPECIAL KING who has a great record at 1100m but has had no success at his two 1000m starts; that could change with a good run from gate three. Others that can go quickly at the trip are WEBSTER, KISS YOUR SONG and DARC BOUNTY. Betting Strategy – SACRED SHAM win.
1 LIM’S SAMURAI * Resuming after long break and change of trainers. Ran second in 2017 Singapore Derby and has won twice over 1200m. Trialled solidly but might find these too sharp.
2 WEBSTER *** Just missed behind Armco last start on turf and Poly form stands up to this company. Can win.
3 DARC BOUNTY *** Freshened since runner-up effort in this class when resuming. Poorly drawn but loves this trip and should be prominent.
4 SARAAB ** Resuming after long break for new trainer. Trialled well and goes best fresh. Won only start this track and distance. Capable of surprise.
5 PENNYWISE * Struggled from wide gate last start. Won Class 3 over 1100m three starts back. Claim helps but not the gate.
6 SUPER FORTUNE * Ran on over 1200m last start. Drops back in trip and hasn’t won for a long time. Might find these too sharp.
7 DINGHU MOUNTAIN ** Not far away when resuming over 1200m. Drops back in trip but should be prominent from good gate.
8 SACRED SHAM *** Ran on last start over this trip and has been kept fresh since. Has a good record at this trip and will be running on.
9 SPECIAL KING *** Led before fading over 1200m on turf last start. Has a great record at 1100m but has been beaten at both 1000m runs. Will be prominent for a long way.
10 FULIFE KING *** Has struggled at recent outings from wide gates but tongue-tie and inside draw should help. With only 50kg will be hard to run down.
11 KISS YOUR SONG ** Consistent but has been finding it hard to win. Drops 6.5kg on recent start in Class 3. Will be prominent.
Selections; 1 SIERRA CONQUEROR – 3 SUN STEP – 2 COUSTEAU – 12 MR ALFONSO
Another one for the speedsters and the Jason Tan-trained SIERRA CONQUEROR looks the one to beat. The 5YO was run down late over this trip last start, carries the same weight and from a similar gate will be hard to pass. The interesting runner is the Desmond Koh trained SUN STEP at his Singapore debut. A 4YO by Fighting Sun, he won two of six starts – both over 1100m – before arrival, has trialled well and from gate three has the speed to be prominent; watch for support. COUSTEAU has been frustrating since his first-up win five starts back but has been given a nine-week break and races best fresh; with Vlad Duric to ride he could be hard to hold off. Nothing else wins without surprising, although QIJI COMMANDER and the maiden MR ALFONSO are in good enough form to include in exotics. Betting Strategy – SIERRA CONQUEROR win.
1 SIERRA CONQUEROR *** Run down late over this trip last start. Carries same weight and from similar gate will be hard to pass again.
2 COUSTEAU *** Disappointed after good first-up win this preparation and has been given a nine week break. Goes best fresh and suited this class and distance. Should be running on.
3 SUN STEP *** Won two of six – both over 1100m – in Australia (Vic) before arrival. Trialled well and has the speed to be prominent. Watch market.
4 OUR DYNAMITE * Has struggled since arrival and gate no help.
5 LIM’S PASSION * Drops back in trip after placing over 1100m last start. Consistent and should be running on.
6 QIJI COMMANDER ** Won in Class 5 three starts back over this trip and fought on last outing. With 3kg claim can be prominent for a long way.
7 WINNER NUMBER ONE * Late Big Elephant. Has changed trainers. Won Class 5 over this trip three starts back but only battled since.
8 ELITE BEAST * Not far away at recent outings but best form is over longer on turf.
9 LIM’S PRIDE * Battling since resuming. Only wins are at 1400m.
10 DREAMWEAVER * Struggling at recent outings. Best form is at 1400m.
11 GOOD CATCH * Placed over 1100m three starts back but has battled since. Needs to improve.
12 MR ALFONSO ** Maiden which has placed at three of five starts. Has speed and can be prominent from inside gate with blinkers off.
