El Dorado looks a classic

El Dorado looks a classic

Larry Foley – Singapore: A cracking weekend of racing beckons from Singapore and while the Group 1 Raffles Cup is the one to watch on Sunday, the El Dorado Classic today is a race not to be missed as we head towards the Gold Cup in November.

And while this Group 3 feature over 2000m may have been moved forward a month, the winner still gets an exemption into the Gold Cup field and the form line from this race has more than held up since its inception in 2012.

In fact Quechua and Bahana both backed up their El Dorado wins with Gold Cup victories in 2014 and 2016 respectively, while Sebring (2015), Secret Win (2017) and King Louis (2019) all ran credible races in the last Group 1 of the season.

Both Bahana and King Louis are heading down the same El Dorado path in 2019 and while Bahana has struggled of late, King Louis looks well in with 55kg and should run well on recent form with Willy Pike in the saddle.

But the horse to beat on recent form is I’m Incredible who will be looking at knocking in his fourth straight win on his way to Gold Cup glory.

This Australian-bred five-year-old has had only eight career starts but has progressed through the ranks with three straight wins – including at Group 3 level last start – and given his breeding suggests 2000m is no issue and is the one to beat again.

The race does have plenty of other winning chances and the likes of last start winner Star Jack and the veteran Blue swede should keep things honest.

Best Bets: I’m Incredible Race 8, Win; Super Talent, Race 1, value and Etwas Neues Race 7, value.
Bankers for Jackpots: Race 6: Field; Race 7: Field; Race 8: 5; Race 9:1 and 5.

Race 1
Selections; 2 SUPER TALENT – 3 KO OLINA – 1 AABIR – 7 MY WIN

Two horses returning after bleeding attacks and the likely favourite in KO OLINA coming off a good run where she pulled up lame, makes this a risky race for punters. In saying that, KO OLINA is in form, had heavy support in a similar affair last start when running second with excuses and will look the winner at some stage. Of the two horses resuming after bleeding attacks, AABIR looked due prior and while drawn wide for this, wins without surprising off the back of a quiet trial, while MY WIN does mix his form but won one of these two back and obviously goes well when right. But one that may be the beneficiary of a strong early tempo and a drop in grade is SUPER TALENT, who should get the favours from gate 4 and if close enough when things gets serious, will work home strongly.

Betting Strategy – SUPER TALENT each-way.
1 AABIR *** Resuming after bleeding attack. Wide gate will test but can win if ridden positively. 6.00
2 SUPER TALENT *** Significant drop in Class and will finish strongly with gate 4 in his favour. 6.00
3 KO OLINA *** Pulled up lame last start but still managed to be runner-up with heavy support. From fair gate with blinkers and 3kg claim will be hard to run down again. 2.50
4 TSURIAN ** Ran on solidly last start in this company and expect the same again but like to see over longer. 12
5 ASIA SPIRIT ** Improved effort to place over 1100m last start and can consider on that effort. 12
6 LUCK MAK MAK * Gate 1 helps but needs to find a few lengths before considering. 20
7 MY WIN ** Resuming after bleeding attack. Won start prior and forward run expected. 12
8 SPUR ME ON * Should find this too short. 33
9 D’GREAT SUN * Maiden who could improve at his first start in Class 5 but like to see something before considering. 20
10 PEGASUS JUNIOR * Only battling and drawn wide but Rodd could see improvement. 20
11 DAYUAN * Battled away OK last start but prefer others. 33
12 SUN ELIZABETH ** Placed in a weak one last start but honest enough to include in exotics from good gate with no weight. 10

Race 2

This maiden could very well be a race in two with both SPIRIT OF BIG BANG and ST ALWYN ready to win with heavy support for the two likely. In fact both should go off close to even money and are horses that will go onto bigger and better races this preparation. Nothing splits the two but the Irish-bred 4YO SPIRIT OF BIG BANG had excuses at his Singapore debut (bad start and traffic) and his eye-catching effort to just miss over 1200m suggests he will be hard to hold out with better luck from gate 4. ST ALWYN is also due and was supported when being competitive until late over the mile in Class 4 last start; he will find this race to his liking and is ready to win. Of the rest, ATTENTION will find this easier than Novice Company, REMARKABLE EMPIRE showed enough first up to follow, while HOUSEHOLD DYNASTY could be the big improver at odds on the back of a good trial.

Betting Strategy – SPIRIT OF BIG BANG, ST ALWYN forecast.
1 SPIRIT OF BIG BANG *** Excuses before going wings late to just miss at Singapore debut. Hard to hold out with fair run over 1400m. 2.20
2 ATTENTION ** Excuses before running on solidly in Novice Company when blinkers added last start and will find this easier on the back of a solid trial. Each-way. 10
3 REMARKABLE EMPIRE ** Returned from a long lay-off with a promising placing on the Poly and pay to keep safe. 12
4 ST ALWYN *** Not disgraced when in the mix till late over the mile in Class 4 last start. This race suits and can win on good form prior. 2.20
5 GRAVEL ROAD * Hard to have. 100
6 SOTHISTHEONE ** Honest type who will figure in the exotic mix. 12
7 JOYFUL ASPIRATION * Solid late in Class 5 last start but would need to find more to challenge in this top-heavy maiden field. 33
8 WINNING LEGEND ** Green on debut but has trialled well since and should improve with experience. 20
9 ZOFFSPEED * No. 100
10 HOUSEHOLD DYNASTY ** Race form looks ordinary and drawn wide but recent trial was good and could be the big improver at odds. 50
11 WINS * Optimistically named. 200

Race 3

This field has plenty depth and while we may look at some value options on the day, WIND TRAIL, MAGNIFICENT GOLD and SUN CONQUEROR are the three that come off last start placings and all should figure heavily in the finish. Not much separates the trio, however, WIND TRAIL over-raced with blinkers added last start but dropping back to the mile from a good gate with Lerner back on, he gets the favours and could be hard to hold out. MAGNIFICENT GOLD has shown at his last two that he wins sooner than later in Class 4 over the mile and will work home strongly, while SUN CONQUEROR has improved at his three runs in Singapore and must be respected. Of the rest with value in mind, BEAR WITNESS has been in solid form over 1400m and a recent good trial suggests he is ready for this, while you can make a silly case for most others so go as wide as possible in exotics.

Betting Strategy – WIND TRAIL win.
1 MAGNIFICENT GOLD *** Shown at his last two that he wins in this company sooner than later and gets his chance here. 4.00
2 WIND TRAIL *** In form and hard to hold out dropping back to the mile with gate 3 a bonus. 4.00
3 LAI MAK MAK ** Can mix his form but mile on the turf suits and worth thought in exotics. 20
4 SUN CONQUEROR *** Improved with each run in Singapore and the trip obviously suits so can win. 4.00
5 GALILEO’S APPROACH ** Can disappoint but looks best when he leads and pay to keep safe with Powell up. 16
6 UNPRECEDENTED ** Form reads badly but gets blinkers and recent trial suggests improvement. 50
7 BEAR WITNESS *** Has been in the mix over 1400m and recent good trial suggests he is right in this. 8.00
8 GOLDEN DASH ** 3YO who showed enough last start over 1400m to think he is more than competitive in this company. 16
9 YULONG SHENG LONG ** Solid late without being a threat over 1400m last start but placed at three prior over the mile. Will figure. 6.00
10 ARCHIE ** Pay to ignore last start as appreciates being back on the turf over the mile and will be competitive at odds. 20

Race 4

A race in two halves with six horses having winning hopes and six having absolutely none. Of the six that can win, WHISTLING GRAND has been in the winning mix at two race starts and gets his chance on the back of a good trial with blinkers added for this and a handy 3kg claim. LORD OF JUTICE is another that is due and retains a 2kg Simon Kok claim so can win, while THE ICEMAN and WHAKAARIA win a race like this sooner than later, with the latter having blinkers added for good measure. There are two newcomers that have showed enough at the trials to win with LUCK OF MASTER having placed once from four starts in NZ before arriving and VALENCIA probably the pick of the two on trial form with Pike to ride at the 4YO’s race debut. Forget the rest.

Betting Strategy – WHISTLING GRAND win, saver on THE ICEMAN.
1 LUCK OF MASTER ** Kiwi maiden who has trialled solidly and worth thought at what looks a suitable trip. 12
2 LORD JUSTICE *** Has been in solid form since resuming from a bleeding attack and will figure very prominently throughout in this. 3.00
3 WHAKAARIA MAI *** Has been improving with racing, gets blinkers and can overcome wide gate and play a part in this finish. 6.00
4 THE ICEMAN *** Showed little when resuming but improves lengths back on the turf over a suitable trip. Goes close. 7.00
5 GENERAL CHENG * Struggles. 100
6 NEWTON * Showed some improvement last start but still needs to show more before considering. 50
7 QUASAR * Late Flying Sky. No. 100
8 VALENCIA *** US-sired, NZ-bred 4YO making race debut on the back of some good trials. Respect with market best guide. 6.00
9 WHISTLE GRAND *** In the mix at two career starts and gets blinkers added first time on the back of a good trial. Can win. 3.00
10 HOSTWIN QUEEN * Struggles. 100
11 GLENAFTON * Blinkers back on but hard to have. 100
12 MAJESTY WARRIOR * Blinkers off but no. 100

Race 5

An extremely tough race to line up the form, given most are either just no good or extremely unreliable. So with one eye on the market, a maiden in SUMMER GLITTER could be the big improver at his first start in Class 5 and is the only one we are keen on. The 4YO has shown little at seven career starts on the turf but his trial form has been good enough to suggest the Poly could be his caper with Simon Kok a good booking. Nothing else deserves a second look so obviously the market will be a very good guide with the likes of IRON FIST, MISS MICHELLE, YULONG SHENGDAO and YULONG HOLY FLYING in the exotic mix.

Betting Strategy – small win SUMMER GLITTER.
1 SUMMER GLITTER *** Maiden who has shown little at seven starts but could improve lengths at first start on the Poly on trial form with Class 5 in his favour. 3.00
2 MISS MICHELLE ** Improved effort in similar affair last start but wide gate should test. 12
3 YULONG SHENGDAO ** Has only battled at his last two but cheeky run expected from gate 2 over a suitable trip. 8.00
4 RIVER HAPPINESS ** Maiden who battles away as a rule so may appreciate the mile. 12
5 GINGERMAN ** Obviously mixes his form so is a risk but won over 1700m two back. 12
6 YULONG HOLY FLYING ** Has speed and not a mile away in a weak on last start so can consider in exotics with tongue-tie added. 12
7 IRON FIST ** Backing up after battling run Sunday but usually thereabouts. 5.00
8 VESONTIO * Placed three back in similar affair but has struggled since. 20
9 GOLDEN EXPLORER * Also placed three back in similar affair but nothing since. Blinkers off but hard to have. 20
10 DRAGONITE ** Always looks an exotic hope on the Poly but a win would surprise. 8.00
11 SCOOTER * Another pace influence that usually struggles late. 12

Race 6

Another shocker with many unreliables, including the top weight INVINCIBLE MAN who has returned a roarer at his last two starts. The problem is that he wins a race like this if right and gets every chance from gate 1 in this field. Likewise, ALARANCH doesn’t win out of turn but in his favour is that he is due, gets Duric and every chance from gate 2. MONT CHOISY put in a good performance to place when resuming and is obviously a chance here, while TOP BANANA has solid form and the 26-start maiden has to win sooner than later. Most others some hope in this terrible field.

Betting Strategy – very small win ALARANCH.
1 INVINCIBLE MAN *** Returned a roarer at his last two starts so obviously a risk but wins if right. 5.00
2 ANALYST ** Maiden who was disappointing last start but has enough pace to have a say. 10
3 WEST NORTH HILL * Recent win on the turf and only battling on the Poly. 20
4 FEROCIOUS ** Not a mile away of late but should be doing better and poly form a concern. 20
5 MY MIRACLE ** Returned to some form last start and this race is weak enough to consider with tongue-tie added. 12
6 ALARANCH *** In the mix of late and will look the winner at some stage from gate 2 with Duric up. 3.00
7 AGNI * Maiden who was nuisance value only last start and expect much the same. 33
8 MONT CHOISY *** Maiden who placed in a similar affair when resuming and have to respect in this weak field. 5.00
9 CASSIS OOLONG ** Only battled of late but always looks some hope in these weak fields. 16
10 ROOTER * Late Roughhead. Not even a mad chance. 50
11 TOP BANANA *** Twenty-six start maiden who has better form than most in this field and should figure. 6.00
Race 7
A dead-set raffle and with nothing separating at least seven of the winning hopes, we will have a throw at the stumps on a maiden in ETWAS NEUES who could be the improver at odds. The Japanese-bred 3YO is having his first start in Class 5, will appreciate the mile on the Poly and may just get the job done at each-way odds. Throw the blanket over the likes of last start winner AMAZING MAN, HENG’S KINGDOM, LIM’S RHYTHM, O’REILLY STAR, HEPHAESTUS and QINGDAO. You can also add TIGER FORCE and YULONG DREAM in exotics. Betting Strategy – ETWAS NEUES each-way.
1 AMAZING MAN *** Surprised a few by winning over a shorter trip last start and better suited here. Can win again despite the gate. 6.00
2 LIM’S RHYTHM *** Placed dropping to Class 5 in similar affair last start and pay to follow. 5.00
3 HENG KINGDOM *** Showed last start that the Poly holds no concerns and wins with luck in running from wide alley. 4.00
4 O’REILLY STAR *** Needs a result while in form but always an each-way show in this company. 5.00
5 YULONG DREAM ** Shown nothing since arriving in Singapore but pay to watch market dropping to Class 5. 33
6 ETWAS NEUES *** Maiden who will appreciate Class 5 and could surprise at first start on the Poly over the mile. 12
7 QINGDAO *** Was in the mix till battling late over 1800m last start but can consider back to winning trip. 12
8 SILENT BOSS * OK late last start over 1200m but gate should test. 33
9 HAPPY SAGA * Battling of late and a win would surprise at start 99. 33
10 TITANIUM FORCE * Maiden who is battling. 33
11 HEPHAESTUS *** Found a good patch of form so always going to be the mix in races that suit. 7.00
12 TIGER FORCE ** Looks to be only battling of late but Duric from gate 2 could see an improvement. 20

Race 8

The El Dorado was formerly the principal lead-up to the Singapore Gold Cup but now being run earlier, has attracted only a moderate field. The form horse is clearly I’M INCREDIBLE who has won both outings since resuming, including the Group 3 Committee Prize last start. There is nothing to suggest 2000m will be beyond him and whilst he rises 4kg, he is a horse on the up and should be too good. KING LOUIS hasn’t won this preparation but has been running in black-type company and is better suited at this trip than when fourth to I’M INCREDIBLE last start; with William Pike to ride, he looms as the main danger. STAR JACK is up in class but loves this trip, drops 4kg on his Class 3 win and his trainer is noted conditioner of stayers – including the horse after whom this race is named. DICTON and BLUE SWEDE just two others to watch in what looks an even affair.

Betting Strategy – I’M INCREDIBLE win.
1 ELITE QUARTETO ** Group winner in Brazil but yet to show up in four Singapore starts. Could improve over this trip. 12
2 BAHANA * Won Singapore Gold Cup in 2016 and was beaten a nose in 2017 but following a trip to Dubai has struggled to beat a runner home. Has shown little in two runs since resuming but winkers may help. 20
3 BLUE SWEDE ** Veteran who ran well in Committee Prize after some solid efforts prior. Will play a part late. 20
4 KING LOUIS *** Not far away in Committee Prize and better suited this trip. With William Pike should be in the finish. 3.50
5 I’M INCREDIBLE *** Promising 5YO bred for this trip and obviously in cracking form. Has won four of eight and will be hard to beat. 3.00
6 SKY ROCKET ** Battled on in Committee Prize but found this trip too far last year and yet to win beyond 1600m. 33
7 CLAUDIA’S BEAUTY * Improved effort to be narrowly beaten in Class 2 last start over 1600m. Bred for trip but yet to win beyond 1600m. 20
8 STAR JACK *** Won Class 3 over this trip last start. This is harder but well drawn and drops 4kg. From good gate should be prominent. 5.00
9 DICTON ** Ran third in this race last year and wasn’t far away over 1400m when resuming. Better suited here and will be running on. 8.00
10 KING’S SPEECH ** Runner-up in Class 3 over this trip last start. This is harder but has form at the trip. 20
11 SONG TO THE MOON ** Ran on in class 3 last start and blinkers go back on. Hasn’t won for 63 weeks but trip suits. Could surprise. 25

Race 9

Some useful 4YOs lift this Class 4 above the mundane. ADIPSON is the interesting runner, although being disappointing when supported last start following a Maiden win over 1400m. By So You Think out of a Zabeel mare, 1600m should be his ideal trip and with blinkers on and William Pike taking the reins, ADIPSON can make amends. BOY NEXT DOOR has the best record having raced in Class 3 on the poly last start when resuming after a freshen-up; he will find turf, Class 4 and 1600m much more to his liking and with a 2kg claim for Simon Kok is well placed. CHAMPAGNE FINALE is another improving 4YO who broke through last start on the poly over this trip and whilst this is harder, he drops 5.5kg and should be prominent. Of the older horses YAYA PAPAYA has never lived up to his early promise but is a solid Class 4 journeyman over this trip being runner-up at his past two outings and having a career record of two wins and eight placings from 15 starts over 1600m.

Betting Strategy – ADIPSON win.
1 BOY NEXT DOOR *** Struggled on poly last start in Class 3 but previous turf form in this grade strong. With 2kg claim will be running on. 4.00
2 I AM THE ONE ** Run down on poly over 1200m last start. Gets 3kg claim but 1600m may test. 14
3 YAYA PAPAYA *** Runner-up at past two outings over this trip. Rises 0.5kg but Vlad Duric stays on and should be in the finish again. 4.00
4 HIGHER SOUL ** Battled on poly last start but finished top four at three previous outings this class and distance. Will be running on. 16
5 ADIPSON *** Lightly raced 4YO which won Maiden two starts back and gets blinkers after moderate effort (with excuses) last start. Bred for this trip and from good gate should improve with William Pike. 4.00
6 ACROBAT ** Disappointed last start as first try over 1600m but has trialled well since. Well drawn and can improve. 8.00
7 CHAMPAGNE FINALE *** Broke through on poly over this trip last start. Will find this harder but drops 5.5kg and should be prominent. 6.00
8 SILENT PRINCE * Needs to improve on recent efforts. 33
9 BIG REGARDS ** Form looks hopeless but very much appreciate being back on the turf. Improves at odds. 33
10 LEGEND ROCKS * Close up at recent 1400m outings but finds 1600m too far. 33
11 MILITARY CHAIRMAN * Has been battling away OK over longer. Only win was at this trip but might need easier. 33
