ANDRE NEL

Bonginkosi Nkosi: The Listed Michaelmas Handicap over 1900m will headline proceedings at Greyville’s Turf track on Sunday afternoon and the good news for punters is that there is tons of value in this contest as bookies are offering 3-1 and better the field.

Seven-time winner, Silver Rose, from the Andre Nel yard is trading at 11-2 and makes most appeal.

He simply doesn’t know how to run a poor race and is actually yet to miss the first two placings over this course and distance.

Silver Rose represented himself exceptionally well when returning from a three-month layoff last time out, running on stoutly under Gareth Wright – who retains the ride – to finish fifth behind Tristful, over a 1600m trip that was far too short of his best.

It also did not help that he gave that rival 3kg. Now a fitter horse, Silver Rose should improve more than the 3.35 lengths he was beaten by on that occasion.

This seven-year-old son of Silvano has not lost his zest for racing and his case is further strengthened by the fact he is most lethal over Sunday’s distance.  He has recorded two victories and just as many second from five outings over it.

Silver Rose is unfortunately drawn worst of all and will have to shoulder 60kg, 8kg more than his biggest danger Our Coys.

Fortunately for punters, Silver Rose is no stranger to defying these sort of odds. He beat Impact Zone by a comfortable 1.50 in March, despite shouldering 12.5kg more!

Although Our Coys has proven costly to follow, he seldom finishes far from the action. He ran ahead of the selection in his latest attempt, so should be included in your Pick 6.

The jockey-trainer combination of Callan Murray and Mike de Kock should boost their already impressive 29.17% win-strike rate when two worthy Pick 6 bankers – Port Key (Race 4) and Balletto (Race 8) – make their KZN debut.

Port Key was on an impressive two-run winning streak prior falling victim to an appalling draw and finishing second at Turffontein recently.

He looks a decent sort in the making and jumps from an advantageous No 5 draw.
