JUSTIN SNAITH

Trainers from the Western Cape and KZN descend on Fairview this weekend for the annual double header which sees the running of Sunday’s R350,000 Socrasync Toro Ya Africa Algoa Cup, (Listed) Powered by Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, over 2000m.

The chances of a local trainer regaining his or her grip on the Algoa Cup on Sunday looks bleak indeed as a group of trainers from the Western Cape, in particular, descend on Fairview Racecourse.

There is a strong field for the R350,000 Socrasync Toro Ya Africa Algoa Cup, (Listed) Powered by Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, over 2000m, which sees former champion trainer Justin Snaith, Brett Crawford and Andre Nel in town with some very talented horses.

In addition, there will be the full Kotzen family of trainers, Glen from Cape Town, Nathan, who is based in Durban, and Sharon, who will be on home soil, with runners in this event.

Snaith is represented by Knights Templar with Richard Fourie up, and Platinum Prince, who will be ridden by Piere Strydom.

It was a combination of Strydoms who last won this race for the hometown when Piere led the field on Surfin’ USA for brother Jacques in 2009.

Crawford saddles American Landing, who has not won a race since lifting the East Cape Derby title in May last year.

Andre Nel has Crome Yellow and Run Red, and it is the former, with Greg Cheyne up, who looks the pick of the pair.

The local entry is headed up by Mangrove, trained by Yvette Bremner.

Whether you’re a racing enthusiast or not, the line-up of on-course entertainment makes for a memorable family outing, including live music performances by The Creed as well as art displays by Luke Rudman, highlighting the plight of the worldwide plastic crisis. Kids entertainment areas, fashion shows, food stalls and an array of prizes and giveaways on offer makes for a day not to be missed.

Apart from great racing and on-course entertainment, the Socrasync Toro Ya Africa Algoa Cup Race day also sees PE horse racing giving back to the local community. Fairview Racecourse will be giving away a R10,000 bursary towards school fees for 2020 to one lucky learner from Altona Primary School on the day.

Parents of learners are able to purchase tickets into the competition from their teachers for R5, which need to be brought along to the race day and placed in the designated competition entry box on course. There is no limit to how many tickets each learner can purchase and all proceeds are donated to the school, ensuring everyone benefits, no matter who wins. Learners and their parents must be on course in order to be eligible to win the prize however, but with free entry on the race course, there’s no excuse to miss out.
