Singapore Friday preview

Singapore Friday preview

Friday November 15 – Kranji meeting Preview, selections, comments and odds.

After the heroics of MR CLINT – and all concerned – when winning the 2019 Dester Singapore Gold Cup last Sunday, it’s back to basics with a solid eight-race Friday night mixed-track meeting.

And while the Class 3 mile (race 5) is the obvious feature on the night, the most interesting race is the Restricted Maiden over 1100m on the Poly (race 2) with the most interesting horse, a debutante in HEALTHY STAR.

What makes this un-raced 3YO so fascinating is that he trials like a very good horse but has no luck whatsoever at two attempts to get to the races.

The Per Incanto NZ-bred gelding was scratched on race day (lame) at his first attempt to get to the races in October before – somewhat cruelly for connections – getting red-flagged at the barriers two weeks back after being kicked by a fractious horse in the adjacent gate.

You need luck in racing – and even more so patience – so hopefully what could be a very nice horse can both get to the track and jump cleanly and give his trainer, owners and his already growing number of fans, something to cheer about.

Elsewhere on the card, TOM CAT had excuses last start in Class 4 after a nice maiden win on debut and he will be hard to hold out in race 7 with Vlad Duric from gate 3 winning factors.

Best Bets: (HEALTHY STAR race 2, win), (TOM CAT race 7, win), and (YULONG HONOR race 6, value).
Bankers for Jackpots: Race 5 (2, 3, 5 and 8), race 6 (1, 2, 4, 7 and 9), race 7 (7), race 8 (1, 6 and 7).

Race cards and Larry Foley’s synopsis follows and for updates on all runners go to

Please note the odds listed are “reference odds” only.

Race 1
This is not the worst Class 5 ever with several more than capable of winning in the grade. The Cliff Brown-trained FIREWORKS won a Maiden over this trip four starts back and fought on from a wide gate last start; he is better drawn here, gets blinkers added and looms as the one to beat with Michael Rodd up. HUMDINGER has been around for a while but he ran on from well back over this trip last start; his previous efforts were sound and he should be closing late. LIM’S TORPEDO is an improving Maiden who ran on over 1200m last start and this class and distance suit. THE ICEMAN placed over this trip in a Maiden two starts back and can be forgiven after running into strife last start; he should get a good run throughout with Benny Woodworth and be in the finish. Others that could show up include OUR SHOWCASE, LITTLE MASTER and RETALLICA.

Betting Strategy – FIREWORKS win.

1 LIM’S TORPEDO *** Improving Maiden. Ran on over 1200m last start and this class and distance suit. With senior rider hard to hold out. 4.50
2 RED SYMPHONY ** Struggling at recent starts but drop in grade and turf helps. Poorly drawn and yet to win beyond 1200m. 33
3 STAR MERCURY * Resuming. Maiden and prefer to watch. 33
4 OUR SHOWCASE ** Placed two starts back on poly at first run since dropping into Class 5. Did nothing last outing but only win was this trip and could improve for Vlad Duric with visor added. 14
5 THE ICEMAN *** Placed over this trip in Maiden two starts back. Checked last start. Should get good run throughout. Can be in finish. 8.00
6 EVERYBODY HAPPY * 21 start Maiden. Placed over 1200m four starts but disappointed last start and blinkers come off. Take on trust. 20
7 HUMDINGER *** Ran on from well back over this trip last start. Previous efforts sound and should be closing late. 4.50
8 FIREWORKS *** Won Maiden over this trip four starts back and fought on from wide gate last start. Better drawn here and will be prominent with Michael Rodd from wide gate and blinkers added. 3.00
9 LITTLE MASTER ** Made some ground on poly last start. Better suited here and will be running on. 14
10 ONE WORLD * Only battled last start and not helped by gate. 33
11 LEO * Only win was on poly five starts back and has struggled since. 25
12 RETALLICA ** Maiden. Not far away at past two outings. Well drawn and should be near the speed. 14

Race 2
Michael Clements has the whip hand here with three of the major contenders in what looks a very competitive Restricted Maiden. Of those with revealed form, the resuming PRIME TIME looms as hardest to beat. The Written Tycoon colt has performed well at four Singapore outings, placing twice including his most recent outing over 1200m in Novice company; that form is good enough for this Maiden and if anywhere near fit from gate one he will be hard to pass. Of his other two runners MOWGLI resumes from a bleeding attack but has trialled well, while RESOLUTION ran on to place last outing and gets a tongue-tie. But the one that may beat them all is the Lee Freedman-trained HEALTHY STAR. The 3YO was scratched at the gates last start but has shown more than enough in trials to win on debut. Include HELUSHKA in exotics.

Betting Strategy – HEALTHY STAR win, forecast with PRIME TIME.

1 MOWGLI *** Resuming after showing some promise at first preparation. Trialled well. Watch market. 8.00
2 HELUSHKA ** Improved to place in weak Maiden last start. Has been freshened and has the speed to be prominent. 20
3 PRIME TIME *** Resuming. Fought on well to place in Novice class last start and has run well at all four outings. From gate one is the hardest to beat. 2.50
4 RESOLUTION *** Fractious at gates but fought on to place last start over this trip. Should be running on with tongue-tie added. 8.00
5 AWESOME CONQUEROR * Needs to improve on debut. 50
6 EUNOS AVE THREE * Gets blinkers but has well beaten at both outings. 100
7 HEALTHY STAR *** By Per Incanto. Trialled very well. Was scratched at gates last start. Watch market. 2.00
8 LOVING BABE * By Scandal Keeper out of a Lonhro mare. Trialled comfortably. Watch market. 33
9 SILVER SWORD * Checked last start but has shown nothing in two outings. 100
10 STUNNING DRAGON * Well back at both outings but has trialled OK recently. 50
11 TWILL GUY * Had respiratory issues when well beaten at debut. Improvement needed. 100

Race 3
A Class 4 over 1600m where most are honest battlers at best. One that may have some improvement is the Donna Logan-trained THUNDER DRAGON. A 4YO by Super Easy, he led before fading last start over this distance, gets on to the poly and from a better gate should be prominent and run the 1600m right out. The Lee Freedman-trained FORESTO has been struggling over longer but his last win was this class and distance five starts back; from a good gate he could go forward and turn his fortunes around. BRACED has been freshened after changing stables following a win over 1700m in this grade last start; he rises 1.5kg but winning rider S John stays aboard and he should be running on. LORD OF CLOUD is a non-winner but rarely far away; he gets back but will be there at the business end. Include AWESOME in exotics.

Betting Strategy -THUNDER DRAGON each-way.

1 FORESTO *** Has been struggling over longer. Last win was this class and distance five starts back. Should be prominent from gate one. 3.00
2 LORD OF CLOUD *** Consistent without winning. Gets back so step up in trip may help. 5.00
3 THUNDER DRAGON *** Led before fading last start over this trip. Gets on to poly and from better gate should be prominent. 3.00
4 AWESOME ** Placed over this trip two starts back. Yet to win beyond 1200m but with 4kg claim and good gate should be prominent. 12
5 BRACED *** Has been freshened and changed stables. Won over 1700m in this grade last start. Rises 1.5kg but should be running on. 5.00
6 SUN CONQUEROR ** Struggled on turf last start but just missed this trip on poly at start prior. Should be near the speed for a long way. 16
7 VOLUMINOUS * Only battled at Singapore debut. UK form was over much longer. Others preferred. 33
8 ABSOLUTE MIRACLE * Placed over this trip four starts back but hasn’t won for a long time. 33
9 WINNING LEGEND ** Won Maiden last start. Up in class and trip may test. 33

Race 4
A very weak Class 5 gives the Cliff Brown-trained maiden, NATE’S HONOUR, his chance. A 4YO by Turffontein, he showed improvement at his eighth start when a solid second over this trip; Michael Rodd stays on and from a good gate he can control proceedings and be hard to beat. The rest of the field are perennial battlers in this grade though MILLENIUM RULE ran on solidly last start over this trip; Vlad Duric replaces Simon Kok and he should be closing late. Of the others TSURIAN hasn’t won for a long time but his only win was over this trip and he placed over 1200m two starts back; from a good gate he should be handy. ROAN RANGER placed on the poly last start and he does boast three wins over this trip; he will be running on. Include ZAHIR in exotics.

Betting Strategy – NATE’S HONOUR win.

1 MILLENNIUM’S RULE *** Ran on solidly last start over this trip with excuses not to finish closer. Gets senior rider and should be closing late. 4.00
2 NATE’S HONOUR *** Maiden. Improved and only found out late last start. Well drawn and should be prominent for a long way. 3.00
3 BOUNCEBACK ABILITY * Resuming after change of stables. Best form is over longer on poly. 33
4 TSURIAN *** Hasn’t won for a long time but only win was over this trip and placed over 1200m two starts back. Well drawn and should be handy. 4.50
5 ROAN RANGER *** Placed on poly last start and has three wins over this trip. Should be prominent. 5.00
6 JOYFUL ASPIRATION * Has only battled in eight outings in maiden company. May appreciate Class 5. 20
7 YULONG SHENGDAO * Only win was before arrival and best Singapore efforts have been on poly. 33
8 BEST BAY * Maiden. Placed over this trip five starts back but recent efforts moderate. Needs to improve. 25
9 MIRACLE TIME * Rider reported issues last start. Ran on fairly over this trip two starts back but yet to place in nine outings. 33
10 ALWRICH * 17 start Maiden. No. 50
11 ZAHIR ** Not far away at both outings since resuming. Hasn’t won for a long time but should be running on. 14
12 BOHEMIAN * 46 start Maiden. Struggles. 50

Race 5
A Class 3 with plenty of depth. The most interesting runner is THREEANDFOURPENCE who won over this trip prior to arrival; ran fourth in the Irish 2000 Guineas and was considered good enough to run in International Group 1’s; he ran on to just miss over 1400m last start in this grade and might be too good for these. ELITE INCREDIBLE fought hard to just miss over 1400m last start following a Class 4 win; he placed in the Singapore Guineas over this trip, has upside and should be handy. VITTORIA PERFETTA is a promising 4YO who held on well to win a Class 4 last start over this trip; this is harder but from a good gate he will be prominent for a long way. SALAMENCE is in good form winning narrowly over 1400m last start; he gets a good gate but rises 2.5kg and 1600m may test. Include DESTROYER ECLIPSE, CARIBBEAN LADY and MCGREGOR in exotics.

Betting Strategy – THREEANDFOURPENCE win.

1 MCGREGOR ** OK last start, will appreciate drop in grade and has four wins at the trip. Can improve with 2kg claim. 10
2 THREEANDFOURPENCE *** Ran on to just miss over 1400m last start. Won over this trip before arrival and ran fourth in the Irish 2000 Guineas. On overseas form up to this class and should be closing late. 3.00
3 SALAMENCE *** Won Class 3 narrowly last start over 1400m. Rises 2.5kg up in trip but in form. From good gate should be in the finish. 5.00
4 DESTROYER ECLIPSE ** Faded at past two outings and blinkers go back on. Won at this trip five starts back, recent trial good and from gate one will be prominent. 12
5 ELITE INCREDIBLE *** Fought hard to just miss over 1400m last start following Class 4 win. Placed in Singapore Guineas over this trip and should be handy. 4.00
6 CARIBBEAN LADY ** Consistent and has been in good form on poly. Will find this harder but placed over 1700m in this class on poly two starts back and has solid turf form. Should be prominent. 14
7 ONLY WIN * Placed this class and distance last start, Awkwardly drawn. 33
8 VITTORIA PERFETTA *** Held on well to win Class 4 last start over this trip. Improving 4YO and will be prominent for a long way. 5.00
9 MIGHTY KENNY * Resuming after bleeding attack. Struggling. 100
10 GREEN STAR * In solid form in Class 4 but will find this harder. 50

Race 6
Another moderate field of Class 5 horses but YULONG HONOR was supported last start when dropping to Class 5 and ran well enough with lameness issues to think he wins soon in this company and a senior hoop helps. SHE’S THE ONE won over this trip two starts back and was kept fresh by a 1100m sprint last outing; she drops 2kg from her winning weight and with Benny Woodworth from an inside gate, draws to do no work and be hard to pass. WHAKAARIA MAI ran on over 1600m last start despite the rider dropping the whip; he is an improving Maiden suited by this trip and with Vlad Duric staying on will be closing late. GINGERMAN won over this trip four starts back and has placed twice since from three outings; from a good gate will be prominent. The improver is ANGEL HALO who drops back to Class 5 after a sojourn in Class 4; he carries 59kg but has the speed to go forward and give a sight. Include ETWAS NEUES and GOLD KINGDOM in exotics.

Betting Strategy – YULONG HONOR each-way.

1 ANGEL HALO *** Back to Class 5 after winning over 1600m six starts back in this grade. Has the speed to go forward and be hard to pass. 5.00
2 YULONG HONOR *** Returned lame last start after runner-up at first Class 5 outing. Well drawn and should be prominent. 12
3 ETWAS NEUES ** Maiden which has placed at past two outings in this grade. Will run on. 12
4 WHAKAARIA MAI *** Ran on despite rider dropping whip last start. Improving Maiden suited this trip. Will be closing late. 4.00
5 SMASH * Needs to improve on efforts to date. 50
6 GOLD KINGDOM ** 15 start Maiden which is always running on and will do so again. 12
7 SHE’S THE ONE *** Won over this trip two starts back and was kept fresh by 1100m sprint last start. From inside gate draws to do no work and should be prominent for a long way. 3.00
8 SUGARTIME JAZZ * Start 107 but hasn’t won for over a year. 50
9 GINGERMAN *** Won over this trip four starts back and has placed twice since from three outings. From good gate will be prominent. 6.00
10 HEPHAESTUS ** Can run on and should improve up in trip. 25
11 HOLY GRAIL * Tested on recent form. 100
12 SUN DRAGON * Struggling. 100

Race 7
Selections; 7 TOM CAT – 9 WATCH OUT BOSS – 4 KA CHANCE – 11 MACH
A very moderate Class 4 with a number of horses resuming after injury breaks and others that have chronic issues. That leaves it open for the 3YO TOM CAT who had issues himself last start after a dominant Maiden victory on debut over this trip; Vlad Duric takes the mount and from a good gate, TOM CAT can lead all the way. Of the dangers, WATCH OUT BOSS is an honest maiden who got too far back last start and should figure, while KA CHANCE ran on when resuming, gets a tongue-tie and he will benefit from a positive ride. MACH has been racing well without winning, gets blinkers and will be running on again. Of those resuming, BENGAL LANCER was racing in stronger class than this last prep and SONG OF SPRING also has ability when right; respect market moves. Include NORTHERN SUN in exotics.

Betting Strategy – TOM CAT win.

1 BENGAL LANCER * Resuming. Yet to win in Singapore and some issues at trials. Not for me. 50
2 WALKING THUNDER * Drops in grade and Poly suits but form disappointing and hasn’t won for over two years. Watch market. 20
3 SONG OF SPRING * Resuming sans blinkers after change of stables. Smart when right but has had injury issues. Only win was at 1400m. Watch market. 20
4 KA CHANCE *** Ran on when resuming and gets tongue-tie. Only win was this trip. Will benefit from positive ride. 6.00
5 KRATOS * Freshened after some moderate efforts. Hasn’t won for a long time and not helped by gate. 33
6 NORTHERN SUN ** Recent win this trip. Never involved last start after rearing in barriers. In the mix if involved early. 14
7 TOM CAT *** Rider reported issues last start (and had traffic issues) after strong debut effort. Has found a moderate field and will be hard to run down from gate 3. 2.20
8 MY GOLD ** Broke through in Class 5 over 1000m last start. Drops 6kg and whilst this is harder can give a sight from gate two. 20
9 WATCH OUT BOSS *** Maiden who got too far back last start. Efforts prior suggests he has a say here. 12
10 JULIUS CAESAR * Blinkers off but needs to improve. 33
11 MACH *** Racing well without winning. Gets blinker pacifiers and will be running on. 5.00
12 CLASSIFIED * Battles away but finds it hard to win. Will be handy. 20
13 QIJI COMMANDER * Has struggled since Class 5 win five starts back. Needs easier. 33

Race 8
The lucky last looks a good punting affair with LIM’S ZOOM, LORD OF LIGHT and COMING THROUGH the three horses that should dominate proceedings. Of the trio, LIM’s ZOOM won first up after a lengthy spell and backed up that win with a very solid placing; Benny Woodworth stays on and he is hardest to beat. However, LORD OF LIGHT will find this easier than Novice Company and if Nizar can find an easy lead from the wide gate, he will be hard to pass. COMING THROUGH has had health issues at two starts since his maiden win but that win was good and he will win races like this if right. Nothing else appeals although CALIFORNIA won well in Class 5 last start (his maiden win) and could play some part in this with luck from the wide alley and LEADING CELLIST could improve back on the Poly.

Betting Strategy – LIM’S ZOOM win, forecast with LORD OF LIGHT.

1 LIM’S ZOOM *** Backed up good first-up win with solid placing. Hard to beat in suitable affair. 3.00
2 COUNTRY BOSS * Battling only since winning four back. No. 33
3 LEADING CELLIST ** Yet to win in Singapore in 17 starts and drawn wide but best recent effort shave been on the poly so could improve. 12
4 I’M A CONQUEROR * Gate 1 helps and tongue-tie off but like to see support after poor run when resuming. 20
5 MASCOT * Resuming and returned a roarer last start. No. 50
6 COMING THROUGH *** Had health issues at two starts since maiden win. Goes good enough if right to win with gate 2 a bonus. 8.00
7 LORD OF LIGHT *** Gave a sight in Novice Company last start after dominate maiden win. Looks suited here and hard to pass. 5.00
8 RED CLAW ** Battled last start but usually thereabouts and worth some thought in exotics. 12
9 CALIFORNIA ** Came in for heavy support when breaking maiden status in Class 5 last start. This is harder and wide gate could test. 8.00
10 SUPERSONICSURPRISE ** Veteran who just missed last start but will need luck from wide alley. 12
11 GOLD COAST ** Not disgraced last start and should get softer run in this field from gate 5. Keep safe. 12
12 WELL DESERVED ** Like to see in easier company but placed last start and another to include in exotics. 12
13 MY FRIENDS * Competitive on his day but drawn wide and should need easier. 50
14 UNCLE LUCKY * Reassess in Class 5. 50
