Warren rides the Wave

Jack Milner: Warren Kennedy continues to churn out winners week after a week and he can add another to his already impressive tally for the season when he rides Wave in Race 5, a Novice Plate over 1200m, at Scottsville on Wednesday.

The three-year-old gelding has raced six times for one win and four places. The only times he finished out of the places was in the Grade 1 Premiers Champion Stakes over 1600m and he clearly failed to see out the distance. He certainly had the class to perform well against that level of opposition as he proved a couple of months earlier when he contested the Grade 1 Gold Medallion over 1200m at Scottsville in which he finished third, just 0.70 lengths behind Eden Roc.
Trainer Gavin van Zyl rates his charge highly as indicated by the fact also contested the Grade 3 Godolphin Barb in which he finished a 1.05-length fourth to African Warrior, as well as the KZN Yearling Sale Million (Non-Black Type) over 1200m in which he finished beaten one length by once again, African Warrior.
Wave was rested after the Champion Stakes and came out in October to contest a Progress Plate over 1100m on the Polytrack. He went off at 12-10 but could only finish second behind Goliath Heron.
He once again has been rested, this time for three months, but the son of Mogok has already found some betting support. He opened at 2-1 and has shortened in to 14-10.
“He deserves the money that has come for him,” said Van Zyl on Tuesday. “He is by far the best handicapped runner and he has a lot of ability.”
Kennedy has ridden him in all official races other than his last start so he knows the gelding well.
If there is a danger, it is likely to come from Paul Lafferty-trained Share Holder. He also won on debut and has been lightly raced. His last start was in December over this course and distance and although Share Holder was beaten 6.35 lengths by Ishnana, he is better than that run and is one of the better handicapped runners in the field.
Talented apprentice Denis Schwarz has been engaged for the ride.
