Jack Milner: The all-conquering combination of Paul Peter and Warren Kennedy join forces at Hollywoodbets Scottsville on Sunday with Rebel’s Champ in the Marula Sprint (Non-Black Type) over 1200m.
He has a lot going for him.
This five-year-old son of Rebel King has run twice at this course for a win and a 0.50-length second behind Ultra Magnus over this distance in a Pinnacle Stakes on 22 December.
He is the best handicapped runner by at least 2.5kg so it comes as no wonder bookmakers have priced him up at 11-10.
The concern is that despite all those assets, he has one Achilles heel – he is not as successful over 1200m as he is over 1000m.
Rebel’s Champ is an eight-timer winner but only one of those is over this distance. Other than that victory, he has raced over this distance on five other occasions for two second places and a third. As a result, while he must not be left out of the exotic bets, 11-10 could be a little too short.
It might be better to side with Celebration Rock who loves this course and distance. He has won five times, with four of those wins coming over this Scottsville 1200m.
Paul Lafferty’s runner is in top form and has improved since his trainer fitted him in blinkers, rather than cheek pieces. He has won his last two starts with Denis Schwarz in the irons and will attempt to make it three wins in a row on Sunday. He is currently on offer at 6-1 and that looks a far more attractive price.
Another with a winning chance is Ishnana. He won his last race with a 4kg-claiming apprentice up, but this time apprentice Luke Ferraris will attempt to win on the Garth Puller-trained gelding.
