FULL MAST

Jack Milner: A good draw over 1450m on the Turffontein Inside track is a valuable commodity and that could give Full Mast the edge in Race 5 at the course on Monday, a MR 104 Handicap.

Trained by Mike and Adam Azzie, this five-year-old gelding has another advantage over his opposition, a liking for the course. While he has only notched up one victory at the track, he has also run three seconds, a third and three fourths in 11 starts.

On this occasion, he will jump from barrier No 1 and will have the services of Gavin Lerena.

He has not raced since 19 March in which he won his fourth race and it happened to be over 1600m at this course.

What is interesting is the decision to run him in blinkers again. Earlier in his career he was fitted with that particular accessory and he won two of his races in blinkers. They were taken off and he ran well enough, but they will be used once again.

The main danger has to be Battle Of Alesia, trained by Paul Peter. This three-year-old appears to have some ability as he finished fourth in the Grade 2 Dingaans behind Shango.

He was gelded early in January and made his comeback in the Grade 1 SA Classic over 1800m but was never in it and finished at the back of the field. Nevertheless, he ran a positive third over 1600m at this track on 14 June when a 1.75-length third behind well-handicapped Magic School in an Allowance Plate.

Whether is by design or not, it is worth noting that S’manga Khumalo, who won on Full Mast in March, will now ride Battle Of Alesia. He rode this son of Vercingetorix last time.

Banker on the day looks to be Seehaam in Race 4, a Maiden Plate for fillies and mares over 1450m.

She is beautifully bred and is a half-sister to Al Sahem and Al Mutawakel. This daughter of Vercingetorix went off at 14-10 to win on debut over 1200m up the Vaal straight. She was beaten into third by Orchid Express but only went down by 0.60 lengths.

The experience and the additional 250m should both be in her favour and she is likely to jump from barrier No 6, if the reserve runners come out.
