CALLAN MURRAY RIDES MARSHALL

Jack Milner: Marshall reverts to 1200m in Race 7 at the Vaal on Tuesday and that could be just the medicine needed to get him back in the winner’s enclosure.

This three-year-old son of Vercingetorix is highly regarded by trainer Mike de Kock and is one of jockey Callan Murray’s favourite horses.

He won his first two races with ease and was then sent out favourite for the Grade 2 Dingaans over 1600m at Turffontein. He suffered an injury during the running and was given a break in which he was gelded. He went on to win his comeback race over 1450m but then was surprisingly beaten over 1600m when he cruised up to leaders 300m from home before running out of steam and finishing third, and then ran unplaced in the Grade 1 SA Classic over 1800m from a wide draw.

His last outing was over 1600m in a MR 109 Handicap where he led 400m out and once again was caught close home.

It did give one the impression he does not see out 1600m against better opposition. That will be tested in this MR 105 Handicap over 1200m up the straight.

De Kock has fitted him in blinkers over the shorter distance but that could also be because he started hanging in his last start. Murray has the ride once again.

Epic Dream has not given trainer Candice Dawson an easy time. Clearly, he is loaded with talent but also had his issues. However, he finally appears to have settled down and has won two of his last three starts, both of them under 4kg claiming apprentice Philasande Mxoli, who takes the ride again.

This is quite a jump in class for this four-year-old Fort Wood gelding but thanks to the allowance he carries just 52.5kg and that had to make him a contender.

Old Man Tyme has run in this sort of company and rarely finishes far off the winners. He probably needs his merit rating to come down a little, but he must have an excellent chance of finishing in the places in a race of this nature.

Top apprentice Luke Ferraris takes the ride for owner/trainer St John Gray.
