Vaseem and Riverstown to fight it out at the Vaal

VASEEM (LEFT)

Jack Milner: Often in a Plate or Stakes race you have a couple of horses who come into the event particularly well handicapped based on merit ratings, but that is not the case in Race 5 at the Vaal on Thursday, a Pinnacle Stakes over 1450m on the Classic track.

Amazingly, four of the 12 runners are dead on their handicap rating, another four are just 0.5kg behind and one is just 1kg out with the top-rated runners.

With so little advantage to be gained by any runner, that makes it a lot more difficult to find the winner as it has turned the race into a handicap.

As a result, it could pay to stay with the two well-performed three-year-olds, Vaseem and Riverstown. Both are lightly raced and as they will be turning four on 1 August, should hitting their peak.

The pick is Vaseem, who has only raced six times for two wins and three places. He ran a 0.75-length second behind Leopold in the Listed Secretariat Stakes over 1400m at Turffontein, then went to Cape Town to contest the R5-million CTS 1200 in which he finished a 1.15-length third behind Invidia.

Back on the Highveld, this Mike de Kock-trained gelding went on to win the Gold Rush Sprint (Non-Black Type) over 1100m at Turffontein

This Vercingetorix gelding has loads of room for further improvement and should quite easily deal with this 1450m.

Callan Murray has ridden him three times, which incorporates both his wins and his third place in Cape Town.

Riverstown is trained by Paul Peter and is also lightly raced. He has only run eight times for two wins and five places. One of his victories was in the Grand Heritage (Non-Black Type) over 1475m up the Vaal straight. He faded late in the Grade 2 Gauteng Guineas to finish sixth and then ran a disappointing fourth in a Graduation Plate. However, he was tried in blinkers for the first time and that probably didn’t suit him.

His last run was a third place behind unbeaten Lady Of Steel over this course and distance so we know he will handle the track. Lyle Hewitson rides him for the first time but will have to negotiate a wide draw.
