RICHARD FOURIE RIDES STOPALLTHECLOCKS

Jack Milner: Stopalltheclocks will be hard to beat if he takes to the Polytrack at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Wednesday.

Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,

Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,

Silence the pianos and with muffled drum

Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.

This poem, Funeral Blues by WH Auden, was made popular when used in the movie Four Weddings and a Funeral 26 years ago but hopefully does not prove to be prophetic for those punters who support Stopalltheclocks in Race 5 at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Wednesday, a MR 89 Handicap over 1400m on the Polytrack.

This son of Trippi is only a one-time winner but Justin Snaith is unlikely to have included him in his raiding party to KwaZulu-Natal for the winter season unless he had a good reason. One possibility is that Snaith believes this three-year-old gelding will run well on the Polytrack.

He does not meet the strongest of fields today and has run some decent races in his career. One of those came on 1 February at Kenilworth in the R5-million CTS 1200 in which he finished 5.15 lengths behind Invidia.

The winner went on to finish a 0.50-length second behind Eden Roc in the Grade 2 Post Merchants over 1200m at Scottsville. There is nothing of that class in this race at Greyville so if he does take to the Polytrack, Stopalltheclocks should be too good for his rivals.

He is drawn a little wide at No 9 and has to carry 62.5kg, but Richard Fourie makes the trip from Cape Town to ride at this meeting and has won on this gelding.

Glen Kotzen hardly goes home from a meeting these days without a winner’s cheque in his pocket and if Stopalltheclocks does not perform, he has three runners who could pick up the pieces with Final Attempt and Hexatonic the pick of the trio.

Only 0.40 lengths separated them last time they met over this course and distance on 1 June with Final Attempt winning and he is now 1kg better off. That is because Hexatonic won his next start which was over 1600m on the turf.

The same jockeys are riding again so Final Attempt should again prove superior.
